Barr, of Greenwood, called at the Herald Office last week. He is a very intelligent young man. E. L. Child of Afton called on us Monday. He has just come in from Frontier County and brings some very handsome specimens of building llock from that region which can be cut and sawed in any shane very easily. He reports no grasshopper eggs to be found there, and is quite encouraged with tho prospect. Mr. E. G. Dovey, our County Com missioner, received a very bad fall last week in walking over the rotten pave ment between Mathews store and Main St. He has suffered a great deal in consequence. Dr. John Black, the staunchest Dem ocrat in Cass Co., has returned home from the East and the Centennial. We have not seen the Doctor, but make no doubt he has, like all of us, wonders to tell. W. J. Abbott, formerly of the Ord House, Lowell, has refitted and fur nished the Saunders House, adding a large and convenient .Sample Uoom on the ground floor, and is prepared to accommodate his guests and supply their wants in a satisfactory manner. MEETING OF TUE HAYES AND WHEELER CLl'H. A business meeting of the Hayes and Wheeler Club was held Saturday evening at Republican Headquarters, at which steps were taken to arrange for speakers from abroad, and also to attend to the details of the Mass Meet ing to be held at Eight Mile Grove on the 31st. A committee of five to attend to wagons and proceseion was appointed: J. W. Johnson, P. L. Wise, P. Paine, O M. Streight. Committee on Music was instructed to inform other bands in the county, and to see how much music they could get out. Messis. McLaughlin. L F.Johnson A E. G. Dovey were appointed as the per manent finance committee of the club. Several bills were reported and re ferred to finance committee. As some of our farmers are losing their hogs from some disease, the fol lowing preventative and cure of hog cholera may le of service to some one, and we offer it as we receive it for the benefit of the hog family and their owners. Take as much arsenic as will lay on an old-fashioned silver 5-cent piece for each hog, mix in swill, milk or water. It will be effectual in every case of cholera. Mr. Wm. B. Porter of this county, after losing upwards of 100 hogs, has put a stop U the mortality by use of the above recipe. C. II. Thompson, M. D. Geo. Smith will return home Saturday from a tour through tlieju dicial district, and will speak in Cass county, exclusively, during the last week of the canvass. There will be a mass meeting at Eight Mile Grove, Tuesday, Oct. 31st, at 2. p. m., at which Hen. Frank Welch, Judge Mason, Gen. Manderson, and others will speak. Gen. Conner will also speak at the meeting in Eight Mile Grove, and Gov. Gaiber is expected to be present also. Mr. T. L. One Heartman, at Harvard has un dergone an operation similar to that which Twain's boy underwent when his liver was taken out, scraped and soak ed to cure the liver complaint. Ilart man had the misfortune to be thrown in front of a hay-rake, and the iron teeth catching upon the back of his head raised the skull completely from the brain. The doctors took him in hand re-raised the skull, took out a lot of chaff, weeds and sticks that had blown in, and now Hart man has the clearest brain in town. Kearney Press. Mr. II. W. Hoyt of the the Saline Co. Post has gone to the Centennial. Mr. Nett Russell of Howard Co.. on his way to visit friends in Cedar Rap ids, traveling with his family, a wife and three children attempted to cross the track of the A. fc X. at Lincoln, was struck by a train, the wife and two eldest children killed, and himself ssriouily injured. The Saline Co. Post publishes a story by Victor Hugo which it states was translated for them by a friend of theirs who is traveli ng through the United States with Victor Hugo a nd this story is a description of their stop at a hut on the Great American Deiert. It is entitled "A Nebraskan night. George Eddison, a brakeman on the B. & M. R. II., was run over while coup ling cars at Crete and killed instantly.
