MacUcrpuy, Ch'n. WHAT THE FALLS CITY JOURNAL SAYS OF GEN. CUNNINGH AM. And the Urovvnville Adctrtiser has gt a $200 note story this time about Church. Howe, of course. Cunningham for the Senate and Cobb for Governor, is the "slate" at present writing. So says an exchange. We (five place this week to some res olutions on financial matters, which came in too late to make any further comment. See Mr. Woodard's advertisement about Pibles in another column. Mr. W. is also agent for Lossing's History of the U. S. and maay other works. He will be around to see you all pret iy soon. For many sins of omission and com mission this week we ask forbearance. Our entire force has been sick by turns, or had friends sick ami we have had to cut short on runny things. We hope all the members of the Cent. Rep. Com. tl:r can will be present. There are many thing3 to talk over. All those that canaot should tea to it that a proper prxy be aent to repre sent the wishes of their district. Elsewhere we publish a rather lengthy, but honest ami careful letter from General E. E. Cunniugham rela tive to tlie charges made against him by the Omaha lite while Surveyor Gen eral. It h;ut more than once occurred to us that the wild and reekle asser tions of the Jift should be noticed by the parties more particularly interet ed, and we are glad that the Generol has given the jeople of the State fur ther evidence that the Bee is a black mailer oftha lowest order. As an old resident of this county, and as a warm and honest friend of a great number of our citizens, the readers of the Ulobe JournuT, we are sure, will give the let ter a careful and attentive perusal, glad to knovr that he defies the world, the flesh and the devil to impeach his offi cial record. The people of tlie State have long known General E. E. Cun ningham as nn honorable gentleman and a faithful puhlic ollicer ; they have long known Edward Hosewater as a blackguard and villainous liar uuder any and all circumstances, a man who has never claimed principle for him self or his Bee, and we believe to a great extent in the future the contro versy will cease to attract notice. THE PRO-RATA MEASURE. We rather think the Pro Rata liill is going throug?!, by the way the Repub lican at Omaha rants. Something must hi' up. it can notice its "Platts uiouth friwiuLs" it last. There is scarcaly any use of attempting to an swer the Iltptibliain, for its whole ar ticle betrays such an ignorance of the real situation, and contains po many misstatements of facts, that it would take more space than we could afford to expose them all. Wfc have heard cf the ostrich hiding its head in the sand. Lutnever before saw so complete an editorial ostrich as our new friend of the R pubUt-an. One would think ho must sfe that every line he writes, every plea he uses on what he thinks his sid of the question is the very best argument to th South Platte country and the state at large for the passage of the pro rata bill. Suppose the facts were ;us he fears that the 15. & M. and C. P. fc Q. are one road, practically, and that they can ig nore their "Omaha connections" some day. Does he ever rellect that the 1. & M. road was chartered and built from Plattsmouth (not Omaha) west; received a large land grant from Gov ernment to build here, to open up and develop this southern country, and that the citizens of this town and county gave large subsidies to this very road to do just this tiling which he com plains they are going to do? Does he know that Omaha stole our rights in this respeet, stole our connections, our through mails, and everything for the time, and crowed lustilv at the theft with insulting jeer and gibe? We have uo fight with Omaha, we do not believe this measure would hurt Oma ha as tiie Republican imagines; but when they come to talk about their "rights" and the IJ. & M. "abandoning Omaha" it is all bosh. It is we who have been wronged and abandoned. tml every sentiment of honor, of jus tice and of law, t.we believe,) should constrain the 15. & 2,1. to do just what the Republiun is so afraid she will do. GREAT OFFERING AND CELEBRATION AT TIIE "PHILADELPHIA STORE," OF Soloman & Nathan xjst PLATTSMOUTII, NEB. This is the way the Lincoln Journal correspondent beads a Plattsmouth letter: FLA TTS M 0 UTM . Cass County Low Taxes, Conseqnently tlie people are Happy. We have received from Gen. Cun ningham (we guess; the nicest little in vite to be present at Washington. D. C. to-night at the opening cf the Repub lican Association of Kansas and Nel raska. Just fermed in W. And to think we can't be there. The Falls City H lobe-Journal, a spicy paper, by the way. predicts that a num ber of pajiors will go over to the demo cracy this fall. Not likely, but they may lead a successful independent movement. There are only two parties before the people this fall, one of these parties will win. To Plattsmouth via the 15. & M. rail way is generally a very pleasant trip. The road winding around on the banks of the Platte river, at the foot of the bluffs is considered to give the finest view in the state." He then says of our taxeti. "The State and county is 14' mills. the smallest in any school district !io. 9) being one-half mill, making a tax of only lifteen mills. The largest in any district is not over .'50 mills all told. The total levy waa only S55.0OO, and the deticiency November 1st, 18 C, only 62,223.29, and the amount delinquent at the present time enly S15,S37..'1, of which the li. & M.R. A GREENBACK MEETING. COURT WEEK, .fudge PouaJ opened Court on Mon day and al! the lawyers are happy. The farmers who wanted tosaw wbeat though, weie uot so jubilant. Never theless matters were fixed up to suit most of the parties interested. Some were excused, and others ent a hand either to farm or court, one of the two. There is a. full docket and business is progressing lively now. The list of Jurors appears elsewhere. Oc the intelligent and loyal press of the country the hopes of tlie nation depend. The people look to the press for correct information political or otherwise and on this they base their judgment of governmental affairs. A b:uT pair conveys a moral poison wherever it circulates. If it is edited with commanding ability, its iowers for evil are freatl increased, and this is still further enlarged in proportion to its circulation. How vital, then, in view of this, become the necessity of supporting good papers. Every citizen who believes in public and private Tiioniiity- should extend liberal support to his li.-sie paper. He stopped the Herald on the street, and with many abusive, vile, foul-mouthed and profane words de clared that we were a liar.'and that he would make us swallow our words Ac. Hal he shown any sort of diguitied passion, and claimed any wrong, done him by the Hkrald, we would be glad to rectify ail errors, but when an indi vidual so far forgets his manuood as to resort to low, slavish and obscene epithets as the only n fuge for hi un governable passiyiis, he drops beneath Cue contempt even of the Herald, and we walk away and leave him as we did Mr. Todd. Calling us hard names such asg d d d cur, d d dog; liar; and much worse and viler names neither hurts us, nor rights Mr. Todd, but only shows the more his unfitness to guide and control public affairs which he aspires to. It must be remembered that this man Todd has continually, and persistently, thrust himself before the publico! this j county as a model of purity of purpose and executive ability. This of itself would not amount to much and he wouid not merit the notice we hare given him; but around him grew every disaffected and turbulent element in the county. He become the nucleus for all the sore-heads and unwise ones to centre on, and he has allowed him self to be put forward as the mouth piece for all these. In this capacity the Herald, after long silence, simply treated Mr. Todd to a dose of his own brewing. It evi dently struck in and will either kill or cure him, we hope the latter.
