Tl'TT, Total. .. Or, Total volatile matter, Total combustible, Coke, including ash A separate analysis ni ide by myself only di lie red from the above iu having one pt-r cent les of ash. flood coal dat's not contain mare thin from live j to eight per cr nt of aslx. .Taa m ;a;i of 04 analyse of Iowa coals gives only o7." per cent of ash. It is seen, there fore, that these supposed coals from Van!. urn's mine contain too much &h to be classed with coals, even the can nel varieties. Iu the reports of the Ge ological Survey of Illinoia, vol. 1, pag 2I2, it is stated that "there is ft great er variety of composition in cannel coals than other kinds, especially in the amount of ash contained, which varies from 23 to 50 per cent. In the latter case it scarcely deserves the name of coal, but is more properly termed bi tuminous shale, and its coke is entire ly worthless. Upon tlie (ire it retains ils form and is apt to decrepitate, splin ters or .'lakes being thrown about by the escape of moisture or steam." The result therefore reached by my examination and analyse? "is that the material of their .vjppjje.J coal is male, up of shale so highly Lituminised as to approach in texture and composition the poorer varieties of cannel coal. "As seams of this m aterial are more variable than any others," (Illinois Be ports.) it is impossible to tell witli cer tainty what further drifting into the bluffs might develop., Thechances are however, in my opinion, against finding anv true cannel coals at this point. On my way to this place I stopped over night at Bock Bluffs, where on the lower edge of the Missouii Bluffs, next to the river, a drift is now being extended into a deposit which is evi dently, from its stratiographical posi tion, the geological equivalent of the one mined on Yar.horn's 1 ind. There the shale contains more bitumen, and ne specimen received since I was there on analysis conies close to the require ments of the poorer varieties of cannel coal. For reasons already stated, only further drifting can determine posi tively whether even here there is any true cannel coal. ' - BesM-ctf illy submitted, . . Samuel Auiu:v.
