Our friend and neighbor, and one of the best neighbors in Nebraska, too, Charley Lazenby, sent us over the first mess of new potatoes, Tuesday, and right good they were. Mr. llobbs had a runaway, last Sat urday a week. His team got fright ened and started for home, spilling a trunk some groceries in the creek and smashing the wagon up before they had gone far. The horses were stopped before they were injured any. The case of Louisa Stohlman is a tleplorable one; our officials seem to have done their best, but can find no law (as usual in 'real troublesome ca es) covering her case. The Fitzgerald Bro's, two fellows ar rested here by our active Sheriff, for crimes committed in Kansas, were re leased by habeas corpus, no witnesses apjiearing against them within 10 days. Sam. Every one admired our grasshopper last week, and wondered where we got him. All the Omaha chaps asked where we got such good cuts in Platts mouth, and the Herald replied that we raised artists and workmen down here. We would kave given Frank credit before, but were afraid some of thesa foreign chaps would gobble him up and leave us "skorL" Frank laugh ingly says the Harpers offered him Nasl's place at 37,030 a year, but he refused, as NTast gets 610,000 and he would not lower the price of good enr-ricatuiists. Tom Skrraek says we are swindled if Frost'-s story is true, for if 73,000 died and the government had only agreed to pay for the eeflins at $33 a piece, it wwuld have brought more money into the coantry than the aid society, and given work to the under taker. One million eight hundred and seventy -5ve thousand dollars for funeral expenses! Just think of it! Two sons of Prof. Wise, our city and county superintendent of schools, are visiting home for the first time in sev eral years. D. McCrea has a son home on a visit. The chickens will come home from time to time. Hon. Church Howe, treasurer of the State Grange, came up to see us on Fri day last, in order to consult with Boss Porter about aid in the way of early seed corn and other help for this coun ty; and we guess they will succeed. Mr. Babcock, of Madison, Iowa, in surance inspector, visited us last week. He came to adjust and pay for the loss on the Rudolph Ileisel house. Mr. Dan. Wheeler introduced him about, and all the boys hope he may come again soon. His company (Wheeler fc Bennett, agents) is the Home, of Co lumbus, Ohio. Senator Paddock was in town for a few moments, on Friday last, on his way to Lincoln. The Herald did not get to see him, but understood that he looks fat and hearty. He hadn't time to come 'round and see such a leetle feller " as the Herald man. Well, tt e train would not wait, and we forgive him. Samuel Ward, late of Idaho, whileom U.S. Consul at Bristol under President Buchanan, visited the Herald on his way to Xew York, on Tuesday. It is twenty-one years since his friends and relatives here have seen him before. Thompson Bissell, of Saunders Co, was here last week. Chauncy Wiltse, our well known1 Surveyor, was admitted to the bar and proposes to practice law after this. Xo more boundaries, no Spencer rifles, no long tramps in "his'n any longer; but by the quiet of his home fire, with his feet on the fender and his Coke in his hand, he will cram himself chuck full of knotty points and his eloquence shall resound in the halls of Justice for evermore. THE FOURTH. As usual, our people are slack about making any preparations for celebrat ing the Fourth of .July. Do let us try and hav1 a good, wholesome, united Fourth this year. Get the citizens to gether and do the thing up unanimous. We are ready, let us hear from the workers. The Herald obtained samples of wheat and corn, after the grasshopper raid, from the fields of K. Parmele, the Poor farm (from Ross Vanatta), Andy Taylor, Uncle Jake Vallery and others, and forwarded them to Chicago as sam ples to show that we yet had some thing left in Cass County, and the In ter (icean acknowledges the receipt of the same, and publishes our letter in full. The body of Mr. Itaney, who was drowned in the Platte last week, was found in the Missouri, opposite the B. & M. Depot, on Saturday. His people were sent for, an inquest was held and the body fhterred in the Plattsmouth Cemetery.
