ZE3I IE tt-JLJLt ID f -ZE T HE HERALD The State Fair. At the city of Omaha, September twenty-ninth (29), 1874, the Nebraska State Fair will open. With proper in terest on the part of our farmers and fruit growers, the season having been propitious, that exposition will be a complete demonstration of the wonder ful fertility of Nebraska soil, and its perfect adaptability to the production of all cereals, root crops and fruits in cident to this latitude. Every citizen can do something to forward the af fair towards success. Every citizen has an interest in helping to the best of his ability, and each fanner in the State will certainly have some product worthy of exhibition. In England premium crops are raised systemati cally, the plowing is premium plowing, and so the planting or any attendance of the crop is of a premium character, that is, first rate, best. But here in the West, Where the soil is rich and easily tilled, we too often leave extraordinary qualities and quantities in production to fortuitous circumstances. Can we not turn over a new leaf in this regard, and make judicious efforts to demon strate the full capacity of this soil V If without especial effort seventy and i eighty bushels of corn is frequently raised upon an acre of ground, why not by extra tillage, produce an hundred bushels, and even an hundred and forty of the same grain upon the same breadth of land? And whereas, witli ordinary cultivation, forty bushels of wheat have been given to the acre in Nebraska quite frequently, why not . endeavor by snrperlut ively careful; sowing and harvesting to produce j seventy-five bushels? i The "premiums offered by the State' Hoard" of Agriculture are liberal and i will be promptly paid when the awards J have been made. In addition to this j incentive the Union Paritie and Hur- i lington and Missouri Iliver railroads! offer special inducements, as purchas ers, at rich and remunerative j rates, of specimens and samples i from all premium or ex- j traordinary - large and fine crops. Will not numbers of i the Tanners of j Nebraska endeavor this year to culti- vate premium crops and bring samples of the same to the State Fair? Among the attractions for the intel ligent cultivator of the soil, at tin next State Fair, will be the address on that occasion. It will be delivered by Arthur Latham Ferry.' the able and well known professor ofd'olitical Econ omy at Williams College, Massachu setts. Frof. Perry is the author of a stan dard work oil Political Economy, ami a gentleman who thinks clearly, writes perspicuously, and speaks eloquently. His theme for the address, which he will give at the Nebraska State Fair.is : THE FO!s OF THK FAIOIKUS." It will be an effort worthy of the man, and the time, and the place. The newspapers of Nebraska will confer a great favor upon ih reading .itizens of the State by making general notice of the fact that Prof. Perry will positively be present: and speak : as above stated.
