This celebrated pongs tress, paid out
town a visit on the evening of J une
19th, accompanied by Messrs. Frank
Gilder, pianist; Alfred Wilkio, tenor
and" Mons. Gottchalk, baritone.
We are not professed judges of Ital
Ian music, bntigood naturedly allowed
ourselves to be dragged down to Fitz's
nail by the wife, who thinkg she can
appreciate good music, therefore our
criticisms are not worth much from a
musical point of view; as a. looker on
in Venice, thougli, our opinions of men
and things we saw there, are deep and
lasting. When the madame first open
ed her mouth we felt rather shaky for
any small babies, that might be on the
front seat. Time, however, reconciled
us to appearances before us, and our
ear drank in the music You know it
was "liquid, being Italian, and al
though some of our country readers
may object to our drinking with bur
ear, all of the elite will understand
what we mean, and to others - we say,
better drink with your ear, than walk
on your ear. It is more agreeable.
The tenor of the language might have
been base for aught we know, but we
could bear a tone or two more of the
Elixir (T amour as interpreted by
Madame B. and Mons. Gottchalk.
That was chalked down for the best
piece in the out-fit. Wo know it was
good, for our friend Johnson, who sat
"forninst us and who is a good judge
of music, clapped his hands and shout
"bravo." We go a good deal on his judge
ment in these off hand remarks, and it
is mainly because we do not want to
hurt his feelings, nor any other true
musician's, that we shall now kind o'
Gild(h)cr over a little in our parting
remarks.
There is no doubt about the fine per
formance of Mr. Gilder on the Piano,
that is something we could all under
stand, and Madame Anna Bishop's
singing was said to be very fine by
those who appreciate such music. At
all events the people of Plattsmouth
are under great obligations to. her for
visiting us at all, as it is seldom that
our people get the chance to hear the
celebrities of the great world in any
role. We were pleased with Gotts
chalk ourself. . on account of his off
hand. easy. war, of singing. " It seems
no trouble at all. y
-There, friends, we coulcT easily have
put on' airs, "read up? on opera &c., and
then given a learned and windy disser
tation on the beauties of II Travatore,
Emahi ox any other opera, with patch
es of -.wise sayings, about the madame's
voice- and all that, but have preferred
to tell you the plain truth and ac
knowledge the corni assured that both
yourselves and , Madame Til rand her
troupe will value this honest criticism

On Monday of this week, we visited
the High School of this place, at pres
ent, under the charge of Prof. d'Alle
mand. Li'l v rt.H
We were very much pleased with
the exercises, especially those in mathe
matics, in which both the first and sec
ond classes seem very apt. Their an
swers to questions, were almost instan-
aneous, and tho solution of problems
on tne slate, more rapia man in any
school wo ever visited. ... r '
If the Prof, has not drilled theni on
one set of questions for company, as
the old ladies say of their china, they
are very bright scholars in Arithmetic,
and both he and they deserve praise
for ' their training. "
It seems to U3 that there are many
scholars in this school that ought to be
in the" Ward schools --yet. Some of
them look awful little for a high school,
but the Prof, assures us that the little
est ones, are often the biggest. There's
a problem for you, scholars.

hoped the next will be held in our new
