must impress upon the mayors of the va
rious towns in their departments the
imperative duty of defending even
town. Those who fail to do so will be
dismissed, and the towns themselves

The inhabitants of the departments of
the Jura Voscres have forwarded peti
tions to the authorities against the ac
ceptance of any peace based, upon the
surrender of one inch of French terri

A vote of approval of the action of Con
gress in refilling to make further ap

Attorney Central Ackerimtn has es
tablished iiis head-quarters at the A.-tor
Ilouse. where he will remain until after
the election, to pronounce upon all ji;est
ionsof law that may arise. He, is in
structed to see that all the rights of citi
zens are re-pected. and that the authori
ty of the United States government is
maintained in all its integrity. lie was
in consultation with U. S. Senator Conk
ling yesterday, and the Senator sube
cfdcntly remarked that the determination
was to enforce the act of Congress at
all lyizrads. No doubtful! or questiona
ble power will be assumed by ollicers but
they will enforce such provisions as they
are assured they will be sustained in ex
ecuting. Tl preparations for that pur
po.-c are being perfected every day, and
there will be no luck of authority to back
up the officers. The 8th U. S. infantry
will arrive in New York haibor to-night
from Charleston. The regiment is abou
COO strong and will be reinforced by
about 400 recruit- who awaU its ai rival.
It will find quarters on one of the islands
l n j-ast river, and when the emergency
is over will proceed to the Canadian
frontier and go into winter quarters.
)ther forces of considerable strength will
fi nd it convenient to concentrate in the
vineinity of New York during the next
two weeks; and, though few people will
probably ever see them, the fact that
they are on hand will be consoling to
one parti' and w ill exercise a wholesome
influence upon the evil doers of the other.
The United States officers charged
with the dutv of exacting the laws of
Congress for the preservation of the bal
lot mean business this time, and the
government 'means to sustain them.

this city, and that resistance on Monday
was not of a serious character. Secre

One day a mother asked her little boy,
as be was about going to bed, if fie
would let her hear him say his evening
prayer. Without hesitation, and with
the utmost seriousness, the little son
knelt down and prayed : "Dear Father
in Heaven, plc-ave give me a strong
stomach, that I may eat all the water
melon I want." Here was a prayer
oflerd in sincerity, not for an imaginary
but a real want. It had been no trifling
altliction to the little boy that while lie
loved watermelon better than any other
article of food, lie could only eat a liule,
while his mates devoured it to the full.
Some time after this the mother again
asked the little boy to let her hear his
evening prayer, when to her surprise, h
offered the same petition. "Do you,
my son, never pray for anything but a
strong stomach 1 " "Why, mother,"
said the little fellow, with perfect sim
plicity, "1 shall pray for that till God
attends to it."

It occurs to the writer that the cause
assigned in text-books for the phenoui
enon commonly called thunder, is neither
satisfactory nor correct. In substance it
is this: The electricity in passing from
one cloud to another, or to the earth,
makes a vacuum along its course ; and
what wo call thunder is the subsequent
collision of the divided atmosphere.
Ibis is perhaps true, if we aecepf it as
a statement of a result; but 1 think it
affords a partial explanation only. My
theory in regard to the phenomenon is
this : The electricity in passing from
one cloud to another or to the earth, de
composes the water iu the cloud into com
ponent gases; and the great heat of the
electriciy ignites and explodes the gases,
and re-forms them into water.

if an explosion does not take place L
cannot understand why t lie mere passage
of electricity, through cloud or through
the open air, chould not be quite a.
noiseless as the passage of any solid
bodv would be through either or both
of these niediie.
The violence of the explosion depends
on the volume of electricity set free, and
the amount of water decomposed ; or if
a volume ot electricity pass through a
perfectly dry medium, there could be no
decomposition of water, and conse
quently no detonation.
And may not the fact that wc can see
electricity depends upon th-? combustion
of gases involved in the decomposition

journal in commenting upon the current
fashions for ladies, says that girls of 14
to 18 years of age should be warned
against destroying tlieir own hair for all
the future, by wearing the masses of
false hair now in vogue. If it has been
kept ,-hort, as it should be until they are
12 years old, it wi.l be .lust the right
length to braid and wear flowing; if it be
too long for that, let them braid it loose
ly and tie at the top with ribbons, so as
to form braided loops, but let them on
no account mount a heavy chignon.
