We understand" he h i- already contracted for a considerable i: ;-ii;'.:r allium the line of the road. S. Hi eom. Esq., of Council Bluffs, was ia th e'ey !a-t week, and made arrange-in-. -its O) have a tw o story business house tavctcd and ready for occupation by the l '.th of September, lie will put a large stock of .o,ds in it. We w ould state for the benefit of the foreign population of our county that Tootle. Ilam-.a & Clark have lately per f cted arrangements, and are now pre ! '.".red to draw drafts on all parts of Eu rope at sight. A mad dug was killed in Omaha last v e-.k. It would not be amiss to kill a h w hundred cars about this town on suspicion that they might be attacked with hydrophobia : omctiruc. Agent Simpson informs ua that lie has discovered that two small packages, not heretofore rejKirted, were "cribbed" by Bra3-ton, the Express robler. They were for parties here, and came from Omaha, and aggregated $328. Large quantities of tools, tent.', etc., have been going west during the past week for the different sub-contractors between here and Kearney. Among others we notice the name of contractor Edwards on a large quantity. It is the universal opinion of all rail road men that there arc more men at work on the line of railroad west from I latt.-mouth than they ever Haw on the same length of road. In the language iif a prominent railroadist of this gener ation. Fittrerald "means business." They are having a "high old time" down at Nebraska City over their R. 11. bond business. It appears that the peo ple authorized the issue of $25,000 in bonds for the Midland outCt, and it now transpires that over $3f,'X) in" bonds have been issued. Mr. (Jeorge Hanlon a native of Ire land, died in this city last Monday night. He was foreman for contractors O'Brien & (jrtiygarty, and had only been in the city a few days. He came off the I. V. It. II. here, and formerly worked for Fitz gerald in Wisconsin. Mr. John Muttz was in town Saturday, having completed his harvest. He informs us that many in his locality are not yet done and that some have only just com menced. The rea.- on of some being so late is the scarcity of help. Mr. Woodman, general business agen of theB. & M. 11. B. in Nebraska, ' left for a trip down the river last Monday, lie will probably contract, while absent, for a sufficient number of ties to com plete the first CO miles of their road west from Plattsinouth. The amount of lumber being sold at the various lumberyards is the best evi dence of the prosperity of the country. Kcr.-haw & Waugh received 150,000 feet of Pine only a few days ago, and have already sent another order for 200, XM) feet more. We presume other yards are making large sales also. E. I. Lunt, Esq., of the Glenwood Ojiuti'ftii, was in our city last Monday taking a look at a live Bailroad town. Mr. Lunt informs us that Clcnwood has taken wonderful strides ahead during the past year, and that they are expect ing the locomotive there in a very short time. We understand that contractor John Fitzgerald purchased last week, the fine brick re -idence of Mr. Lazenby, corner, Fifth and Vino streets. Fitzgerald fully understands that there is money to be made by purchasing property in this citv now. Tlic work of grading the Passenger Depot grounds of the B. &, 31. Ii. 11. is ii"arly completed. They have the finest depot grounds of any road west of the Mississippi river. The work of grading grounds for Freight I rjot- ;md Machine Shops will be commenced soon. We advertise a large quantity of land to-day, for .'-ale by Spir!ock& Windham. We underst:;nd Mr. Windham will here after give his undivided attention to real estate business. They have already on their sales book ; some of the most desir able lands in the county, which will be f old low. Mr. Taylor, in charge of 11. 11. work west from Platt.-mouth. was up the line as far as Seward ounty last week, and is very much delighted with the country. He is no exception in this matter all parties who visit the country west of Plattsinouth agree in saying it is the finest country in the world. Every coach from the II. 11. Station brings from ten to twenty passengers. It is safe to say that fifty new men ar rive in Plattsmouth every day, looking for locations ; and nearly every one of them that leaves the city goes for the purpose of making preparations to locate here. We learn that a young man named AsherCooley was sun struck last Tuesday while working in the harvest field near Glendale, in Louisville pminct, iu this county. He was taken to his father's house in a bugg3'. Our informant un derstood him to be considered djinger ous. Great bargains arc now to be had in Railroads. Nebraska City will build one anywhere, if the people will only furnish the right of way. Waters lias one of his own, in which Nebraska City has no interest, which is alresdy in operation. He will probably ask a little something for his road as it is an extra one broad gauge. I-sizenbyshave fired a new kiln of brick, and will fire their la.-t one in their present yard in a day or two. They vacate for the 11. 11. Depot. They have about 600,000 brick ou hand, all of which will probably be used within 200 yards of where they stand, for building R. 11. Depots. A Mr. Scott, of New York, came in last Monday from a trip through the Interior of the State. He seemed per fectly infatuated with Nebraska, and says he never saw any country that would equal it. He will settle somewhere on the Blue, and will probably be the means of bringing fifteen or twent3r other fam ilies with him, as he comes to look for locations for about that number. Mr. Leonard, Artist in charge of Thomas Gallery, is doing some as fine work as you will find in the west. We have a photograph made by him of the picture entitled "Washington as a Free mason," which is equal to any eastern work, and far euperior to what we gen erally get in the West. Call at the Gallery and look at the specimen-. Mr. C. E. Perkins, Superintendent of the Ii. & M. 11. K., passed through this town last Wednesday, on his way Lack to. Burlington, from a trip into Nebraska. Montgomery JZcpress. See advertisement of the B. & M. R. Store to-day. This store does a heavy wholesale business along the line of road west, as well as an extensive retail trade. Mr. John Fiszgeruld is proprietor, but the business of the store is"undcr the im mediate charge of Mr. Cu diing, who is always on hand to see that all things are done satisfactory. A fellow giving his name as John S. Gilfoil, an Englishman by birth, a sailor by profession, was brought before Re corder Wells Tuesday on a charge of being drunk ami disorderly, and having broken a glass door in the Exchange Sa loon. He plead guilty, put on a brazen front, cursed the country, the Court, and most all other things he could think of, was fined $25 and costs (amounting to $12 in all,) refused to pay it, and got locked up iu the calaboose. He will probably pay Ids fine under the supervi sion of the Street commissioner. The JVcss says "no towu ever had a railroad constructed to or from it.without being more or less infected by thieves and burglars," and argues from this premises that the Midland road will soon be built because there are "thieves and burglars" in Nebraska City. Wo do not think the idea is original with the Press, but conclude it has borrowed the idea from Daniel Webster, when he said "no people ever lost their liberties who had a water-fall one hundred and sixty feet in height." Waters, of the Nebraska City Chron icle, has built another Railroad. We understand he completed this one, iu running order, in-just three days (one half the time it took to build the world) without the least bit of help from either the Aeir or IWss. . Waters is enterprising? He constructed this road while Morton and the other drones were finishing up the Midland. The only trouble about Waters' road is that, not withstanding it is all built and has cars running on it. he is in a little quandary to know exactly where to put it. Hang to it Waters. Don't allow it to get loose in this prairie country. A friend requests us to advise papers copying railroad items from the Nebras ka City papers, to look out fur "Mare's nests" as no two of them agree in their statements. For instance, one paper says the contracts are let, another that they are going to be let; one says the iron will arrive in a day or two, another that Dr. Converse has to go to New York to make arrangements for the ship ment, and yet another one contenls that White broutht the iron some months ago, and so it goes. There i lots of fun in looking over the railroad items from the different papers published in Nebras ka City. We believe most kinds of fruit raised iu this latitude have been tried in Ne braska, and n-arly all have proved emi nently suece.-: fill. Professor Miller is the only person v e know of who has tried the cultivation of Apricots, and the specimens left in our P. O. drawer last week are sufficient evidence to our mind that this fruit has also proved a success. We have desired to learn of the Prof, some particulars in regard to his exper ience in raising them, but have not been able to see him. If we are not mistaken he got the pits from New York and raised what trees he has from them. Mr A. Hale, of Eureka HI., Patentee of Hale's Suik3' Gang Plow, has been in the city since Monday exhibiting his plow Fitzgerald has boon testing them on the Railroad work. The plows now here A were not made for as heavy work as re fpiired on Railroad grade, yet they work to perfection, only requiring to be made heavier. They cannot but create a rev olution in farm plowing, as one man with a pair of horses will do as much as two men and two teams by tLe old method of single plowing. This is the first in troduction of these plows in our State. Mr. Hale informs us that the Molina Plow Company are about taking hold of their manufacture. They can be fur nished at from $70 to $S0. They have two plows, turning 12 inches each. Mrs. Margaret, mother of Rev. T. B. Lemon, of this city, died a few days since at Frederick, Maryland, at the advanced age, of eiirhty years. His friends here will deeply sympathize with him in his sad bereavement. ArA. City Chronicle.. TEA SOCIAL. There will be a Tea Social at the Court House Hall Friday evening next (Aug. The happiest and best member of a family is usually called the light of the household, be cause, beside being happy and cheerful himself or herself, she or ho makes all else happy and cheerful. Such a person is a family treasure. Next in order to such a one is a Charter Oak Stove, which is actually the Kght of the kitchen, and metaphorically the light of the whole house hold. It is th3 most interesting and important feature in the family economy, for it fills the house with warmth, the table with gooil cheer, and prevents that cheerless aspect, and those indigestible meals that bring sourness of temper, discomfort nnd dissatisfaction.
