The future success of the Temper
ance cause will depend a great deal
upon the training of the young. If
they are allowed to frequent these
places of drunken resort and infamy,
they will most assuredly partake of the
same spirit, as they grow up to be men,
while on the other hand, if parents will
not indulge their children in this prac
tice, and will take pains to teach them
the true principles of Temperance, they
will grow up to be men who will be an
honor to society and a benefit to man
kind in general. This will apply to
many I think m our own city. C.
How often is a young man induced
to take" his first fatal glass at the solic
itation of fair woman. Oh woman
you know not what you do when you
urge a young man to drink. You can
not foresee the result of that one glass.
Your hands the white jeweled hands
that lifts the poison that kills body and
soul may be stained with blood ere
long:. Think of this, women of Amer
ica, women of Nebraska, women of
Plattsmouth, and let your influence be
given to the pure and holy cause of
Temperance. lJarmh the ruby wine
from your board, stand up in yo ir pride
and your purity as champions of total
abstinence.

I chanced to be passing along on the
streets of one of our beautiful western
cities not long since, when I passed a
saloon, find, tit the door I saw three
promising young men discussing, as I
supposed, the propriety of going in
and getting a drink before going home
Presently I heard one of them re
mark; "Well, boys, you may go your
way, but I will go mine," and started
off. Who was this young man? A
history of him would not, be uninterest
ing.but space will not permit. Suffice it
to say his father was a drunkard, which
gave him ample opportunty or seeing
the folly of intemperance, and in his
youth he resolved to be a temperate
man: Hence his reason for not drink
ing with his comrades.

Of the Order of Good Templars in
Nebraska of the early Introduction
Progress and Temporary Declined, o
the Order in the Territory now State
of Nebraska, we have but little in
formation ; and we intend to refer
mainly to its re-introduction, by the in
titution in this city of Olive Branch
Lodge No. 2.
In August lSo9, according to the
best information in our possession, the
Order was first introduced into Nebras
ka, when Peru Lodge No. 1 was duly
instituted at Peru, in Nemaha county
under a charter granted by the Right
Worthy Grand Lodge of North Amer
ica. We are also informed that, dur
ing the twelve months following, there
were other lodges instituted, but they
must have been short lived and their
identity seems to have been entirely
lost, as they were not reckoned in the
re-estab'ishment of the order in 1SG5
Ptru lodge continued her noble work
and labor of love until the breaking
out of the rebellion, when her work
was suspended, and' for four long years
there existed no organized opposition
to the hydra headed monster, Intern
perance, stalking abroad spreading
desolation and ruin around.
In August 1SG5, application was duly
made to brother Rolla A. Law, then
Secretary of the Right Worthy Grand
Lodge of North America, for a cnar-
ler to organize a lodge in this city, and
on the evenings of Sept. 1st, 1SG5, in
the brick school house in the city of
Plattsmouth, Olive Branch Lodge No.
2 was duly instituted.
This lodge, which started out under
rather favorable auspices, had its sea
sons of depression and sore frial, but
despite of all, it continued to increase
in interest and extend its influence, and
from time to time new lodges were in
stituted throughout the county and State.
We would here remark that Peru lodge
which had been slumbering for more
than four years, again sprang forth in
new life some time in the latter part of
the year 1S65, arid his since been do
ing good service in battling for the
right.
On the 9ih of July, 1SG7, in less
than two yaars after the organization
of Olive Branch Lodge, the Grand
Lodge of Nebraska was instituted, by
lira. N. S. Peterson of the Grand
Lodge of Iowa, when we had thirteen
lodges in the State, five of which wure
in Cass county, but just at this point we
will close this dry sketch with the
promise if we like this when we see
it jn printof .Morx A.to.v. !
