GOOD TEMPLAItlSM.
As much &s has been done for the
past number of jears to. abolish, intem
perance, there seems yet to be mnch un
done. That young men and aged men,
and oven women, in some portions of the
country, etill allow themselres to become
slaves to intemperance, admits of no
question. " And while many are so fool
ish as to drag their bodies down to a lower
standard than that of the brute, thank
God, there are those who always shen th
serpent, and oome oat boldly for the
eause and humanity. For many years
past there have been temperance organi
zations. Able lecturers have been put
in the field, and much accomplished in
that way. The old Washingtoniam and
Sons of Temperance still bold a sacred
nlaee in our memories. Many miscella
neous societies have been organized, un
til now we have the Good Templars and
Host of Temperance. While our fore-
f athers,who fought so nobly for the cause,
havn nasaed away, let ua still strive to
follow their good examples, until theser
pent shall no more find room to spread

Slavery was a curBe to our country
yet, it-prevailed many long and weary
vnrs. but finally it was crushed.
it should not be expected that tho Good
Temnlars can aooomplish all the great
worst of reformation in a day, or a year,
or, perchance, a century; yet, by diligent
work we ean acoomplish much good, and
save many a soul from the yawning gulf
of debauchery, lhe sturdy oas aoes not
" get its growth in a day, neither does the
fragrant flower. . Ihia great worn or rei.
ormation does not belong alone to Gosd
Templars, or temperance societies, but to
all mankind.
IIow often do we read o: promising
young men, whose hearts, perhaps, were
onoe hlled with aspiration, ana wnose in
teilect was unquestionable, going down
to perdition, from the too frequent use of
intoxioatng drinks. Look, for instance,
at the late General Ilalpine, better
known as "Miles 0'Reiley,,,who actually
came to bis death from the habitual us
f strong liquors. He, doubtless while
youth, had no idea of becoming an intern
perate man.
Young friend, forever abstain from
beverage that may and will bring you to
shamo and to death, if persisted in.
Take the advice of one who feels
deep interest in your welfare, and da&
the poison from you, with a resolve that
you will never touch it again. This i
the only path of safety. ,

As vear afwr vear passes by. we
notice a great reformation in imemper
ance. There does not seem to be nea
the amount of whiskey drank at pres
ent as in former years ; yet, withal
the reformation seems so slight as to
hardly be noticabie. It is indeed
strange that intemperance should be
tolerated in our land. We otiea read
of our beautiful America ; hear stales
men boast or their glorious states ; see
the lordling survey his boundless acre
and hear the poet sing of the lofty hills
and murmuring streams, until one might
think ours was a land of paradise, and
the people inhabiting it next to the
angles in Heaven, in purity. But the
other side of the picture presents quit
a different scene. Could the bird
which soars the lofty heavens, but
speak, sad would be its story of drunk
enness and revelry upon the earin.
Yonder is a fine church edifice,
Sabbath morning approaches, and the
bright eved urchins are seen wending
their way, from every part of the city
to Sabbath school. The Sexton draws
the rope, and- the bell rings out clearly
through the open air. All hearts are
glad, and Heaven is honored by the
Christian's, smile. But, Hark ! A
crumbling sound fills the placid air
What is it?" all hearts anxiously
enquire. Clashing of arms, and wild
screams are heard. It is a drunken
row. A Hell on earth. Innumerable
are such occurrances. Drunkenness
seems to prevail. KingAlcohoI reigns
and the world fears his ruling. Give
the mind' "its fullest expansion,
and horrible would be the history
of intemperance . presented to
our view. But how are we to
destroy their King, and make Temper
ance ruler of the Universe, l answer:
by sending Law forth, David-like, to
slay the monster where he stands
Just so long as the law encourages
intemperance, iust so long will our
beautiful land be dotted over with
drunkard's graves.
Arrest the inebriate, says, one ; im
prison him. cries another ; but let the
one who made him drunk go unmolest
ed. If this be law (and yet it seems
to be. now-a-davsl then I pity its
wisef?) makers.
I think I hear it remarked, "My
friend, I learn you are a Good Tem
plar, you complain so much about in
temperance in the land, why don't you
and your friends put it down !'' ; Allow
a repetition here. I ask: how in the
name of common sense can we put it
down, when the law stands out one of
our foremost and boldest enemies to

How easily might the law of Ne
braska and every other State read,
"No more intoxicating drinks shall be
sold within the Jimits of this State,"
and how many a soul would be saved
from ruin, and a heart-broken family
made to rejoice over a reclaimed son,
husband or father. Reader, think of
