All matter vr VU Department ihuuld I aMWt to W. T. PARCEL. IF.limERS'.CLlB. The first Saturday in each momh is the regular day for the meeting of the Cass county Farmers" Club. Saturday December 2d there was only seven members present. Several questions of interest were introduced for discus sion. A member proposed that a pe tition be circulated among the farmers petitioning the Legislature to pass a law compelling owners of stock to herd their etock nights, commencing the 1st cf September each year. Some of the reasons advanced in favor of such a law were that stock commence getting unruly and break into cornfields in the fall as soon as the grass begins to get dry, and should be taken care of to keep them from learning to break down and jump fences; and that it would be a great saving to the farmers, as un dr the present arrangement thousands of bushels of corn are destroyed every year; more than sufficient to pay the extra expense of herding stock nights. Farmers will do well to consider the matter, and try to get a more stringent law against unruly stock irunninjr at large in the fall, and especially nights, when the fields cannot have the pro tection of a man or boy with a good dog. The subject of fencing was also in troduced. It is a very important sub ject, and one that interests every good farmer. There should be more atten tion given to raising hedges, a a line fence is a necessity on the prairies where timber is scarce, as a protec tion against the severe winds as well as for protecting the crops from stock running at large. TheOsage Orange is undoubtedly the beBt plant " for hedge ; but this year the seed cannot be had in any quantity, as the fruit has failed in Texas and Arkansas, where it has been obtained heretofore. The question was asked in the Club if the Honev Locust could not be used for fencing, as well as the Osage Or ange. INoceofthe members present could say from their own experience whether it could or not; but nearly expressed it as their opinion that all it would make a good fence, but that it would require more time loan me Osage Orange. Any person who has tried the Honey Locust for a hedge, will confer a favor by giving their ex perience in the agricultural department. of the Herald. The seed could be procured by gathering it in western Iowa, tvhere it grows upon nearly ev ery rnu wUere mere is limber; pecially along the Missouri river. es The President of the Club exhibited two ears of com that weighed two pounds, and the shelled corn weighed one pound ten ounces. The next meeting of the Club wi Y on the lait Saturday in December instead of the first Saturday in Janu ary. All persons interested in agriculture are requested to become members of the Club, and are invited to attend the meetings and assist in making them in teresting and useful. LIVE TP TO TOt'K IDEAL, This should be the great aim of the farmers as of all men. Every one has in his mind, an ideal of what his farm, his home and its surroundings should be. In his quiet, thoughtful moments, he pictures to himself his farm laid out in cocvenient fields, his timber lot spring ing into existence under the stimulants of fertile soil and genial seasons, his orchards laden with choice fruits, his garden filled with the finest vegetables, his crops rightly chosen for profit and rotation, -all well tilled and weedless. He sees a comfortable house comfort ably furnished in which his family is happy and contented; and out-baildings neat in good repair and conveniently located. In short, his homestead, he knows, should his ideal be carried out, would be a little paradise, yielding him profit and pleasure. And yet to actual ly realize this ideal how few efforts do most men put forth, though little by little, bo v much may te done is three years that roll on, bringing the end of all vis ions and of all efforts. Men dream and delve and drift, leaving no spot on earth the better, or move the beautiful for their iviug, no example worthy of imitation. This need not be, were the attempt earnestly made to accomplish their own ideal of farming and of farm life. True hey may never be able to reach, com pletely, this ideal, but there is pleasure its pursuit, when commenced, and satisfaction in all progress toward it Action is the simple talisman that se cures all success. Tbe Military and Naval f accesses of 1S64, with the ankniciiiiia result of our l'rexidential eontent. have lifted a heavy weight from the breasts of the loyal millions of our countrymen. The perils of foreign iterveiitiou and of Western insur rection are safely pawed : Abraham Lix oln, no longer assailable as a choice of the minority, holds the helm of Mate for four yoars longer; the rebellion palpably weakened by its defrata and losses during the past year with its credit so reduced that its purse-learer officially declares that its Treasury notes can oul v be exchanged for com at the rate twenty-five for one, w hile its bonds command but six cents on the tlollar-bnt awaits the blow which shall soon strike the sword from its puracidiil hand and remit its master spirits to the justice, or it may be lo the cleni' rcy, of a sorely wronged and justly icensrd but forbearinc and maeuanimous people Such are the auspios which justify our faith that the oresent rear wil see the Mars and strip' s 11 ml un challenged from every battlement in the U public, and the perfect law of Liberty for All Immovably no bed-led in the Constitution of our Union.
