LOCAL NEWS- g"E. II. Eaton lias purchase! tho t&Dtl known fin the ret utoro on 2J St. and I fitting it up in good style. JOar Stenm Ferry which wa? dam aged last week by bursting her boiler, was considered useless tho remainder of the season. But we nro gratified to see it again 2oat, making her regular trips. 5TVc bare often heard individuals wondering whero this or that person was who bad served in the array under "Pap Trice." We should judge by the elec tion returns, that a goodly number of thetn might be found in the neighborhood of Nebraska City. z7"i uesJay morning last we saw the remainder of the timber for the bridge across Salt Creek leaving town. This is ftnmprovement that not only our county Vill feel tho advantages of, but inake3 'the road west from Plattsmouth in good bljie, not having any streams to cross but what nro well bridged. ' (jyQuito an amount of roligous ex 'citement is being awakened in the East. In New York City Prayer-meetings have been organized in which all denomina tions participate. The interest is spread ing, and Doston, Philadelphia and Ualti vnore are following the csample of New jrAt ameating of the Treibytery of Ihe O. S. Presbyterian Church at ;ien wood, Iowa, Revs. Clark and Daird were assigned as supplies to tho Church at this place. Rev. Daird will preach in this place on the 23th inst. (f5rCass County has proclaimed her self for the Union, and we invite nil civil law-abiding men, who desire to live in a truly legal community, to'coino here nr.d ecttle. Resides giving a good round ma jority to the Union ticket, ve have the ' Lest agricultural county in the Teriitory, and plenty of tho finest land in the world? that only awaits the coming ofsomo good loyal man to cultivate it. (Tt the judg-a of flection decided on Administering the presHru ed oath to all who voted in this precinct on Inst elec tion day in order to avoid any difficulty that might arise from thu challenging pro cess. There were but two men offered their rotes who refused to take tl.e oath Itis unnecessary to say they were both Democrats. fjrWo learn that no votes were chal lenged at the polls in Rock Dluffs pre oinct on election dav, und that no one was required to take tho oath. This may 1 not have made any difference in tho vote, rbut we are inclined to think that it would I hare been good policy, to rtquiro some :at least who voted there, to take the oath, 'und to havo mado a notu of such, if there were any, who were believed to have aided the rebellion. f"Ye learn that a burly rebel caused aorne disturbance at the polls in Weeping Water precinct on election day. He sot -out by saying that all those who voted .the Union ticket were "no better than diggers," and used much more of tho eamo kind of language. Mr. Guygor, a ?uiet anl peaceable Uermm citizen who .'had lived in that community for many ; jer, Tentured the assertion that thoso who voted the Union ticket were "as good -a lie was," whereupon this bully knock ed lim down and bruised him severely. We understand that be has been arrested, --and wo hope bo wil get the 'Tights" that Lis class of men have had so much to say abSut for the last four or five years. J2?Now is the time for those desiring to aettle in this country to look about. If tbey delay till spring, it will be too Iato for them to get settled and put in their -eprinj crop; but leathern commence now, and there will be plenty of time to look around and find where they can do best, and then get permanently settled before spring. There are a number of first class farms can be bought at reasonabla rates in this county; among others that of A. M. P. Whittier, situated some six or seven miles south of this city, and on the main Nebraska city road. This is an excellent .farm, well filled up with necessary con- 'veniencM, and a bargain can be had in purchasing it. JTbe whistle of the steamer Majors -created quite a stir in our city last Fri day morning, as it had been ascertained ,-that Maj. Gen, Sherman was aboard. We together with a number of our citi made all haste to the landing, for ithe purpose of reconnoitering this great ;modern hero. Upon arriving at theboat, jthere was "nary General" to be seen, .the eager crowd (of some dozen or more) wanot to be "bluffed," and upon enriui tj it was found that the Gen. was tucked away in bis stateroom, taking a com fortable snooze (just like any ordinary man). Learning that some people wero aboard who wished to get a look at him, he came forth and cordially shook hands with those present, thus gratifying tho desire of each one to look upon the man who had marched through the entire reb el country without meeting with a single Reverse. Married On the 12th inst., by Rev. Amsbury, Q. M. Serg't A. McMakxx and Miss Straps Chalfant, all of this county. We were not before aware that Andy was on recruiting service, but find ho has enlisted one for a long term. Q'xTThere is at this time a large force of workmen employed on the line of tho Burlington & Missouri river R. R., grading and constructing the road betweecn Ot tomwannd Chariton a distance of fifty five miles. The work is let to Messrs. John S. Wolfe t Co. of Cedar. Rapids, Iowa, who are well known as first-class railroad contractors. We understand the contractors have, at this time, a man west of tho Missouri river, who is offer ing very liber al inducements for sub-con tractors, mechanics, teams, teamsters and laborers. Persons wishing employ ment during the winter season will do well by going on the line of this com pany, as they give Eteady work, and pay every thirty days. This portion of tho line is through the best part of Iowa, where everything required for man or beast is abundant, and very cheap. Tho contractors are now wanting to hiro 1,500 men in addition to the largo force already employed, as the work will bo pushed on during tho winter. The agent has already employed a large num ber of men in Omaha and along the line of road west of that place to work on the R. & M. R. road. This is a fine chance for all to obtain steady work and good pay during winter. Q'Wm. Stadalman & Co. have just received, and aro receiving a large and well selected stock of ready mado cloth ing.
