MAIN STREET. for tho half dotenth time, and in the utmost good nature, without thought of of fence or hope of .t access, do we call the attention of cur city fathers to the necessity of a rmall culvert across Main street from the northern corner of 4th. Under the migio influence of tbe St. J'ie and Coancil U'uffi Rai!radt which will be completed to North Star, Mo just opposite this city, the coming week, it has sprung into such prominence as to make its h"utory woitb chronicling, which we shall do as we!! as time and space will admit. - .. Pearman, proprietor of the Riverside Fruit Garden, Davenport, Iowa, we are Indebted fur a choice sup ply of Clinton Grape Roots. Col. Fornas, as Agent, has a lot of these for rale this Spring. These are undoubtedly as fine roots as were ever shipped to this country, and in splendid condition. Mj( Pearman is an old Nebraskian, in fact, one ol its pioneer?, ar d one of tbe rt to respond for the de fense of tur frjntier when the 2d Nebraska Cavalry was made up, ia which be became M-ijer. The completion of tbe railroad from Council Bluffs to opposite this city places us in close connection with tbis Nursery, from which it will pay all to cr ier, as they can rely Upon getting gaod stock, quick trans portation and fair dealing. THE COUNTRY. During the pst week ye local has been ia tbe country in searsh of "femtle help," and.ahhoagh we have a patent washing ma chine, sewing mchir.e, knitting michioe, churn, etc., not having either a planai or melodeon, wc had a long ride and our own company Lome. Despite our lack of success, Nemaha county has as god-looking a lot cf mniagab!e g risaicia be foand anywhere. Farming operations are bting pushed with a vigor and energy that gives as great hopes of large crop. We met a few grasshopper scared individuals, but are pleased to say we left them reassured and con fident. Many new farm houses are cow being erect ed, 'and many have been built since we were out last fail, ail. in their dimensions and architectural dis play, indicating permanence nd prosperity. Wheat looks well for the season, the frost sot having injur ed it worth mentioning. Oqi very notrjeible fea ture ia the cumber of wire fences being put up and Hedges being sot out. The&e fane in materials wi.l toon supercede rail and boards to such an extent as to greatly diminish tbe cry for timber, whila at the pame time we notice that more timber had bfen set oat this season than ever before. Nem iha county is now ia as prosperous condition as could be de tired . SIDEWALKS. During tbe putrvney spill car citizens have had a splendid cpprtuuity to, im nugine how pleasant it would bo to hve good side walks ob Main street, an 1 step scones oa cros streets. We have been in Nebraska too long to heed a little mud. ankle deep, or thereabouts, but our gallantry will not permit silence when our ladies and children are compelled to enjoy this muddy luxury, at the rik of losing their shoes or stay at home. . Ereaoar love for the tudy cf feajale anatomy is overcome by our desire for their happiness arid welfaro. On theoorthsideof the street 600 yards of dirt mved would grade the sidewalk to fich, and oa the south 100 yards taken out and li would grade it to 7lh. Manyof oar citiisas have this Spring graded and would doubtless pave, but where would be the bene fit bile one baa every b !f squire to sby out into the mad to pa around a bump of dirt on the fide Wilk. . There always will be some droc?s too close fisted to keep up their improvements, and compal aion is tbe ody rmsly. We adivise a "forward movement, all alorg tbe line ;" entcpr'f bss a lig majority in every block, let this majority petition the Co duc 11 to have the work done, and ty June cr July we can lave rpod liiewilfcf frcra tla river to t-o ralvtrt.
