I.inrvn 1jc fioon T'nrpro'iTi ff nnr ofScs since its commencement, and is TTcli acquainted with our people, and the business of the establishment. .We feel confident the arrangement will prove advantageous. to proprietors and patrons. As is well known to those familiar with the Advertiser Office, we have thus far given our personal attention to both the mechanical and Editorial departments. To do which, has taxed our time, and what talent we may possess, to a greater extent than any one has an idea. Either department is as much as one man can do justice by. To edit a paper properly, is in itself, the severest task that can be imposed upon an individual ; and yet many think it merely a pleasant pass-time. Itiithecontinu.il attention it requires, the endless repetition of toil constant draw upon the intellect, requiring all the exertion of the faculties, not only in writing, but selecting fresh matter each coming week. Nothing can be used over; all must be new, and adapted to as many different tastes almost as we have subscribers. The simple writing of an article for publication, when one "feels like it," amounts to nothing. But to feel the obligation to write every day, or week, whether inclined or not whether well or not whether sur rounded , by affliction or cheerfulness in short no matter what the cireum stances . surrounding, we must write, produces a "wear and tear" of mind unequalled by any other vocation. - The new arrangement will enable us to give our entire attention to the editorial department of our paper. We hope to pursue such a course, and take such positions as will continue our journal what it thus far has been, eecond to none other in the Territory. the points we pasted. At Nebraska City theyhave moved along amazingly. Fine large buildings' have as if by magic sprang up in every direction. The larrc new Hotel biildin. makes an imposing appearance from the river. At Wyoming everything bore the im press of "onw.rd and '. upward." The site is 'beautiful, and enterprise, the peculiar characteristic of. Nebraska towns, shows forth unmistakably. Rock Bluffs has grown almost put of knowledge the past season. "Platts mouth beautifully Situated just below, the mouth of the ; Platte river, has surpassed the expectations of its most sanguine friends.' - - : . ; : Omaha City haSi-with her indomi table perseverance and energy, done Judge Ferguson, ! "We are pleased to learn and an nounce to, our Nebraska readers rthat the reception of our Delegate,; Hon. FenseiC Ferguson,- at Washington',' by the President and heads of Depart ments,' ;wa3 of the most cordial and flattering character. y; T Every effort is still being made by Chapman and those interested ..with him in his western speculations to create an outside pressure against Judge Ferguson. The . Washington correspondent of the St. Louis -i Re publican who rumor says is Chapman himself has been latterly devoting much "time and space" in this line. In a'recent letter, Oct. 12, thiscorres-- pqndent. has hunted up the fact-riwe nobly," J She.: has taken hold of the ' have only this authority, however capitol building, and . withlher own that the Judge had applied to the Sec- Please Pay up. Owing to recent new arrangements in this office, together with a pressing need of funds, it is very desirable that all indebtedness be liquidated. We have not thus far been very urgent in our dunning operations. It is one of ' the most unpleasant tasks we ever performed, to dun a man; consequent ly we never do so unless compelled by stern necessity. . To carry on a print ing establishment, especially in this western country, requires a constant 7, no others but ourselves as individuals be affected by such a course, we would "suspend" further publication of the "Advertiser" until spring. But we cannot xor s.momeuv uuuk, ui uuupi. ing such a course, because of the ef fect it would have upon our'city and county, and their enterprises. We look only, and expect, to be sustained through these pressing times, by hav in . nnrtion. at least, of what is due . o r. ' ... us, paid. : - .. means, nearly competed it will have it ready for' the doming, session of the Legislature. : . The buildit-g: completed according to the designs will truly' be a magnificent affair. ' The new hotel now enclosed will be the'most exten sive andelegant inthe western country. It is a private enterprise...' Dr. . G. L. MrLLER'and Mr. B?JDGES. have taken upon themselves the entire responsi bility and management of the concern. They deserve great credit. From our personal acquaintance with Dr. Miller, we take pleasure in saying that 'no point" can boast of a more stirring, thoroughgoing, enterprising, go-ahead citizen. ' The new court house and jail nearly completed, are also very cred itable. They are built by the city. - A view from Capitol Hill, of the improvements brought about within the short space of time since the city wa3 founded, can not fail to produce wonder and' surprise in any one. Omaha, Saratoga, and Florence have the appearance of one vast city ; they are so nearly connected with improve ments. A few years will show them as "one man" an unprecedented as sembling of people, improvement and enterprise. "Last though not least," we found no point in our little trip that has made more progress than our own, Brown- ville. She has done her dutv ' na a j 7 ;eneral thing. And yet there are many who have "left undone that which hey ought to have done" We want more energy and enterprise we mmt have it we will have it. Our princi pal enterprises have fallen heavily up on a few, while the many derive the benefit. Our business men ought, to gether with our principal property holders, to lend more of a "helping hand" than thev do. Thev will feel the bad effects of their course, when Mark it! " " ' '. ' I' , . . ' ' ' ' . With all our progress, advancement and prosperity, a3 a Territory, " a sudden change has come over us." The "financial crisis," . sweeping the length and breadth-of the land, has laid its chilling hand upon us, and for the present we are "checked up." What is to be the result? We verily believe, that like the plow shear, from severe rubbing, we will come out the brighter in the end. Everything has been too fast ! Property ha3 been too high fictitious has been its value. It will now find its true legitimate value, and in the spring thousands upon thousands of new comers will flood to our country, and all will again move off "like clock work." Progress. . , The word has been, hitherto, stamped indellibly upon everything "connected with Nebraska. Last week we took II u - . . .. t i . ' ' 1 a firing trip up the river as tar as'the Citr of Omaha, the Capital of the Territory. Going up, there was, by the way, something more of the "trip" than the "flying three days and niht3 on the "stormy deep - trom Brownville to Omaha wasnt very r.lcassnt. Wo were nlcased to witness the pro rcis improvement md at .all I retary.of'the Interior for the issuance of a Patent for a. quarter section of land which he had pre-empted ; against which some" one has. filed a protest. The, article, closes' by gravely saying "and as his seat is contested by the Hon. BirdB. Chapman, thefact3of the case maybe the subject of anexaminationby the House of Representatives. It i3 due to Judge Ferguson that the whole matter should be thoroughly investi gated by the Government and the facts officially made known. ' He -miij ' be able to explain satisfactorily every cir cumstance going to impeach his veracity and honor." - Whathas this , contest for a quarter section of land, if (true, to do with his seat in Congress?-Just nothing at all. We think the writer must have been pushed for matter. was .JN We hav ; From tae Upper Missouri. Major CulbertsoN, principal agont of the American Fur company, Dr. Arnold, Surgeon ; and Gen. They came in a "mackinaw boat" as far as Nebraska City. They report matters as between the Indians and whites in a peacable and friendly condition. The "different tribes of Indiana have yet considera ble difficulties among themselves.. The Siouxs are particularly quarrelsome, and disposed to be oppressive to their weaker brethren. Maj. Culbertson has been for thirty years in this service his head is now. "silvered o'er with the frosts of many winters," yet his eye i3 keen, his step elastic and his form noble and commanding. . 1 . One Frenchman in company had been in that "upper country"- eighteen -years; now returning for the first time. He expressed himself greatly sur prised at the improvement "along this river since I went up." He thought he would "run down and see how the folks were getting along at home." He was from what in an early day was called Vide Poche, now Carondelet, and realy a portion of St. Louis. We have been waiting the reception of the News that we might obtain particulars; but thus far have been unable to learn anything from that source. We learn, however, that the Treaty was conclud ed on the 27th, lasting three days, that by this Treaty the Pawnees sell to the United States all their right to land in Nebraska Territory, saving only a strip of twenty by thirty miles on the Loup Fork, to which they are to remove immediately. Mission schools are to be1 established among them, to which they agree to send all their children over the age of ten years, and their young men are to serve, as apprentices to various trades.. .... Capt. White, Gen. Denver's - Sec- retary, wa3 sent immediately after the close of the Ireaty to the bioux nation of. Indians to have d Vtalk" with them. We learn from Gen. To these they have heretofore, paid but little attention, and we presume will do no better in the future, tuntil they ar severely chastigfrd. Nebraska Territory.: An agent appointed for the Indian tribes is now engaged in dividing the lands reserved for the use of the half breeds of the Otoes, Weas, Siouxs, and other tribes in. the Nemaha. Valley, Nebraska Territory. This reservation has already attracted the notice of the land sharks of thatJTerritory, and it is rumored that crowds are awaiting the division in order to enter upon it, bv purchase or in any other way. In some cases fairprices have been paid for it, and in others claims have been bought for a song, but it is doubtful whether they can be held. . .This is the best part of the Territory, as wood and water are in apunaance. The above, we find floating in "our exchanges without credit. The "land sharks'' spoken ' of, are not of '-'"that Territory." They are nearly, or quite all non-residents ; some, howeverj with whom we have conversed, promise.to become "actual settlers' - Tf they do, well -and good. If not, the" condition af those" lands will be far worse' than had they " remain ed undivided. We look with interest for the result of the possession by the Half-Breeds of trans- ierraDie lines.- - - Property In Omaha City.; - We see it stated in some of the papers that property in Omaha City has great ly declined. Lots that, in early Spring, sold for $1,000 will not bring $100. We learn, too, that potatoes are sell ing in Iowa for 15 cents, and corn for 20 cents., . - There is one consolation in these ex cessive hard times. Produce of all kinds will be cheap this winter.
