Certainly it ought, from its good Qualities, to attract more attention than it Joes. It is an article w hich no good 'garden should be without, and a little of which ought to find its way to every body's table. .. f'gc. The leafstalks of rhubarb iiave.long been used in many parts of the'eouutry in tarts and pies, in the same nranhcras'apples; they are also stewed alouo or with rice; made into jellies ' and ether preserves; and when fully grown, the juice expressed i3 made iirio an excellent wine. . The varieties of llhubarb are raised frem seed in the first instance, which .is the only way of producing new sorts. Varieties already established, are increased by dividing the roots, retain ing a bud or crown to cacli section. "Whether originated from seed or in creased by a division, a deep rich soil is required to insure the full develop ment of the foot-stalks, for upon their size, rapidity of growth, and conse quent tenderness of fibre, much of their merit depends. The soil should le rich and mellow, and should be trenched not less than two and a half or-three feet deep, adding at the same .time a sufficient quantity of rotten manure-. Fall, or after the first.frost, is the best time for planting, whicli should be in rows five feet apart, and thrtie feet from plant to plant. " For the first year, the ground between . "the rows may becropped with lettuce or similar low growing crops; but the second year and afterwards, the leaves will -coyer tho whole space, and require at aL'o for" their full development. From tho depth- to which the roots extend, subsequent manuring will be of little benefit to them; therefore, in prepar ing 'ground for a new plantation, it should be enriched to the depth recom lacnded above, and if a liberal supply of broken tones be incorporated with the manure, so much the better. Ap plications of guano water are highly beneficial if applied while the plants "ire in a growing state. " The after culture ' consists in keeping the ground clear of weeds, and occa sionally loosened at the top with a fork " or spade, breaking over the fiower m stalks as they appear, that their form ation and seed producing may not draw unnecessary supplies fiom the roots: The -second year after planting, a few of tho largest footstalks may be gathered. for use, but . this gathering shauld not be commenced too early in tho season, because in that case the plants would bo too much weakened. From the third year, as long as the plantation lasts, it may be gathered with freedom.- If planted in rich soil, and "kept in good condition, a planta tion will keep good for twelve or fifteen years. Thomas Jenkins. From the Country Gentleman, . UN E EEL RAINING WITH STONE. Messrs. Eds. Having been on at tentive reader of the Country Gentle man from .No. 1, Vol. I, until now, J have found the subject of underdrain ins land written upon from time to time, which has led mc to believe this tie best method of improving the value of land so situated as to be subject to such -treatment. Accordingly, this fall hayc begun to drain part of my barn ineadrv. It contains eight acres wet lajid lies sufficientls descending to give a fall of six or eight feet. The surface soil is from one foot to eighteen inches, in depth, black loam, then a ort of clayey hardpan. Wo make the ditch two feet wide at the top, and slant down to six inches at the bottom. Ye dig it three and one half feet in . depth and fill in small stone to the depth of one foot and a half. The .smallest stones arc the best; and I have plenty at hand not fit to lay in wal, which ought to be cleared out of the. wry. Then put on inverted turf : over the stone; then fill in the soil dug from the ditch. This is the plan of a foreigner works for me. lie says he has seen it tried in Ireland with com plete" success. Now, if yourselves or correspondents know anything about this way of underdraining, I should be glad to hear about it. .Lucius Griswold. Hilton, LitcHcU Co., Ct. CHEISE-HAHHTO. Yet there are a fair nnmber of dairies 'in this section that are generally excel - lent, and rank deservedly high in mar ket, both for shipping and for the retail whiter city trode. AGENTS for Strauo's Corn and Wheat Mill the "Queen of the South." This remarkable Mill has been kept secured to the inventor by caveat recently; however, (June 27th, 1854.) Letters Patent for the United States have been granted, se curing the invention for fourteen years. This Mill has sustained itself wherever it has been brought in to competition with other Mills. It was run against the other'makeof Mills of our city, at the Ohio State Fair, in 1850, when it drew a diploma as the best Corn Mill, and was awarded a fine silver medal. Of these Mills we manufacture five sizes for corn, and three expressly for grinding wheat flour. Tho peculiar novelty of this Mill is, the under stone is the running stone, in all cases. There is no limit to the speed, and as speed is everything in grind ing, it will out grind any upper grinder in the world. Secondly: By this arrangement we are enabled to get grain into the Mill with a very email eye, conse quently we grind nearer the centre, and of course with less power than any upper runner can be made. Thirdly: Our Mill takes any kind of grain without choking. We warrant against choking in any and all cases. This is a great vexation causing delay and trouble in all Mills where the upp ;r stono is the run ner. Of course, we mean ? mall Mills, where the mo tion must be high to do much business. Fourthly: . Our Mills never take (injury by running empty the under stone not touching the upper one, no injury can oe aone. x nis is an important advan tage over all Mills where the nppr stone is the run ner.
