UotH parties claimed tho ownership of tho dog. Dr. Urady's attorney, however, stated that they could prove tho claimantship be yond doubt by the recognition of the dog for Mr8. Urady, and she was accord ingly summoned. Tho animal immedi ately jumped from his place in the prisoner's box and showed with every demonstration of canine joy his recog nition of his mistress. In consideration of the adverse testi mony this was still not convincing to tho judge, so Mrs. Urady said thaf if she would sing a certain song the ani mal, in resaanso to his training, would join in with her in his dog fashion and voice and sing the song through. This she did, and at tho first words of the song tho ih,g ea ed for joy and fulfilled his part tf tho duet. No further evi de tiro was taken, and tho canino re turned home with Mrs. I'r.idy. "The Scarlet Letter" went out of copyright early in the pres ent year, and Uvoor three cheap editions promptly appean I on the American market.
