Sioux City, la., July 7. About three
o'clock this afteruoon Joseph Riter,
of Council Bluffs, bat who has been in
Sioux City for several months, shot his
paramour, Minnie ilurdock, a prosti
tute, in a bouse of ill fame known aa
"The Grove,'' inflictiug a fatal wound
in the head. Kiter then turned the
weapon upon himself inflicting a dau-
gerous wound in the head. Kiter id of
good family. Hie father has been in
the newspaper and bindery business in
Dakota and Iowa tor twenty years, and
is an exemplary man. Joseph was a
gambler by profession, but was a qu'et
unoffendiu man, and his. act causes
much surprise. It is stated that an ef
fort on the part of the woman to aban
don Kiter was the cause of the tragedy.
Mrs. Murdock bas a hutbaud in Dav
enport, whose name is Murdock. She
went by the name of Dixon.
