He Meet 9 an Kueuij Who Had Sworn to Kill Him If He Married 3114 Hf.sser. .V telephone message was received at l:yu labl evening at police headquarters lloui the grocei y at the head of St. Mary' uveuue, stating that a man who hid taken poison liutl been put on niri-et car No. 4, to came dui Ioaii, and that he needed immediate int-Uical attendance. '1 he policu were accordingly notified, and bhoiuy utter ten o'clock the mmi was t'oiui 1 in a .Mil t ear near Tenth street by Captain Donahue and Police man Hindu), who brought him up to too city jail, where he w us laid on a bed to wait toe aiiival of the city phtbUiau, Dr. Leist-nruig, woo soon ut-ponded to the telephone summons. Tie doetoi learned from tho man that lie had taken strychnine, mid thereupon lie vi- mm the usual remedies, cauMng him to vomit, and in the course of an hour the victim w;.s resting more canity, al thouga frt'jucntly wrenched by piino. The doctor liually pronounced him out of danger, t.iy ing tli.il he w ould be all right iu me morning, aud alter leaving aoiuc directions for the admi-iiMenn of medicine, he toon his departure. The man's name is Robert Von Cleave, and he has for some tini'i been engaged iu ruuuiug the Commercial faun, near Lincoln, lor J. J. 1 mho H', the the proprietor. He is about thirty years ot age, is a tine, intelligent look tug man, and is well dressed, ho having on his wedding suit, in which he was married in Plattsmouth ou Monday last, to Miss Lmma llesser, daughter of Mr. llesser, the well-known florist. Van Cleave and his bride came to Oma ha on a little wedding trip, and regis tered at the Metropolitan hotel. Yes terday morning Van Cleave determin ed to commit suicide, for reasons which will be found further on. Immediately after dinner he gave his watch to his willi, and leaving the hotel he went to a drug store and purchased ten cents worth of strychnine, lie then got on a street car, not knowing exactly where he was going, but he tiually lauded at Ilnnscom l'ark. Kutering the park he walked about lor a little while, aud at 2 o'clock he took the poison, in the full expectation that it would end his life iu a very short time. lie lay down un der a tree to die, but the poison itseeies did not do its work as quickly as he had expected, lie suffered, as he himself says, all the afternoon, both in body and mind, and when night came he made and effort to walk into the city. Upou reaching the grocery store at the head of St. Mary's avenue, he was unable to proceed further, aud entering the store he informed the proprietor of what he had doue. The groceryman at once put him on a passing car for the city, and, as stated above, tele phoned to police headquarters. At midnight a reporter of the Repub lican bad a talk with the unfortunate man, who iu response to various inqui ries as to what led him to attempt sui cide , said that he had not had any trouble with his wife, and wouldn't have had any trouble with her if he lived a thousand years, tor she was one of the best womeu In the world. He left her at the hotel, without informing her of his intention. of suicide, and she was probably was i here yet or at the house of a friend, Mr. (Jordon, who clerks at Millard & Peck's commission housf ; furthermore, she was iu utter ig norance of his whereabouts or condi tion. He had given her his watch as he had fully expected never to see her again. When asked what led him to the rah deed, he said that yesterday morning he saw on the street a man who was following him aud who had the advantage of him, or wanted to get the best of him but iu what way he would not say. olher than that the man knew something about him and had him in his po wer. "Did this man ever threaten you nsKeu tne reporter. "No; but he is following mt, aud wants to get the best of me," icplied he. "What is his name, and who is he.'" "I don't think it best to tell at pres ent. "Did he ever know your wife? Is he jealous of oou?" No, he tloes not know my wne, ana is not jealous." "Does he know sometinug aooui you by which he can give you trouble. VeB;butI have doue nothing to criminate niyscit. Do you think he has some blackmail scheme in view ?" "Yes." This was about all the information that could bo obtained from him, and told the same story to Dr. Lieseuring and others. It is certainly a dark mys tery, and a very sad affile-, ft. is 8U3 pected by some tnatar, yige man, whoever he may be, knows soneming concerning Van Cleave, which? if di vulged just at this time, immediately after marriage, might ruin him fu the eyes of his wife. On the other hand, the union uuaie, would be suicide might have been la boring under an hallucination or tem porary insanity, although he seemed perfectly rational last nigui. .remaps the mystery will be solved today. THE SOLUTION TO THE MYSTERY. Since the above was written, the epublican had learned the real cause that led Van Cleave to attempt suicide. The strange man, whom he saw on the street yesterday morning, was an old lover of Misa Hesser. Some vears ano this man, w hose- name is unKiiown to our informant, wanted to marrv Miss llesser, who was then finite voting, and she re fused him. He afterward married another woman, by whom he had two children. Thev hnady seperatcd.and when he heard that Van Cleave was going to marry his old sweetheart.for whom he no doubt still retained an ardent love, he swore he would kill Van Cleave if he married her. This, then, shows why an 'Cleave wa3 drhen to desperation yesterday upon meeting his deadly enemy, lhe iacts in regard to this affair are obtained from a gentleman of this city, who n attended the wedding of Van Cleave and Mi93 llesser on Monday. Miss llesser told this gentleman's wife about this man and his terrible oath a short time airo. while she was in - ' Omaha purchasing her wedding out Gt, and on her wedding day she again referred to the matter. bue never told any ono else but this lady. The jenlouft rival, who has swoin to kill her husband, occupies n farm near ImholTs, which is conducted by Van Cleaves. The appearance of this man in Omaha immediately after the mar riage certainly does look as if he was following Van Cleaves to carry out his threat. Under the cii cunistaeces Van Cleave would have been justi fied in killing him on sight. Omaha Republican. The above startling occur re nee will be read with unusual interest by our citizens as Mrs. Van Cleave is known by nearly everyone iu Platts mouth, as one of the best and "bright est young ladies in the community. She has grown up from childhood in our midst, and has many warm per sonal friends who will truly sympa thize with her in her trouble, and re ileiate the sentiment of the Republi can in ridding the earth of the cause of Jieii uiiliappincss. Still Progressive .Scarcely a day has pissed lor weeks w i'.l.oiit there being recorded the sales ot one or mole pieces ot reul estate mar Omaha. Several large farms tuive changed owners within the past twenty day, and smaller tracts near the city limits are being bought al most daily. Among the last mentioned is it beautiful live acre Jot located in the northern part of the city. .Nego tiations for its transfer are being carried on by our real estate linns, and if the land can be secured, Dr. A. S. Fishblatt, proprietor ot the Oni.iha Medical Dispensary, will become the owner, and will at once proceed to erect a sanitarium over which he will pre side. Tne pieseut location ot the Omaha Medical Dispensary is over the Omaha Xational Rank building, which is oue of the linest aud most centrally located buildings in the city. Here Dr. Fish blatt, whose growing practice has com pelled him to look lor larger and more commodious quarters, has the linest and most elaborate set of offices, par lors, laboratories, etc., etc., of any simi lar institution in the west. Every ar rangement for the comfort and ease of the patient or visitor have been care fully looked after, aud nothing has been left undone that would have a tendency toward elegance or making a visit io a physician pleasant, instead of dreadful, as true in most cases. Visitors can reach the second floor, on which are located the reception rooms, by taking the elevator on Hie erouud floor, and will be ushered iu by an attendant wno is always iu wwiiug. The waitiug room for lemale patients is especially adapted to the use of la dies and children, and is furnished und fitted with good taste, and an unstinted hand that shows that nothing has been spared to make the surroundings luxu rious, refined aud homelike, 'the large and well arranged labratory is also one of the principal features of the es tablishment. In these rooms all the remedies used by the doctor are prepar ed by skilful aud experienced hands, under his immediate and competent supervision. A large business is doue iu the way of mail orders aud the ex press companies state that Dr. Fish blatt contributes largely to their north ern, southern, and western business, shipping nearly as many packages, par cels, boxes, etc., as any business house in Omaha. Patients are daily registered at the various hotels in the city, coming from all parts of the country clear through to California. Should Dr. Fishblatt succeed iu securing the tract of land mentioned at the beginning of this ar ticle, Omaha and the west may feel justly proud of such an institution as will be maintained, .ami as tue repuia tiou of the Doctor and the Omaha Med ical Dispsnsarv is so well established there is not the shadow of a doubt but that Dr. Fishblatt'a Sanitarium will be well patronized and the most sanguine expectations of the Doctor be f ully re alized, and the Omaha merchants be trreatly benefitted by au additional number of strangers visiting the city to l.-.ke advantage of Dr. Fishblatt's skill aud the beuetits of being treated at the new institution.
