Mary Carney of this city has ere ated a commotion in Omaha by causing the anest of Park Godwin, a prominent attorney i the metropolis, on the charge of embezzlement. Mr. Godwin was once the democratic county attorney for Douglas county and stood high as a law yer. It seeus that JHrs. Carney hired Mr. Godwin to brine: suit for her against the Omaha Street Railway Com- eleep. He went to visit some friends in Watsrbury, and as he was not in the habit of retiring as early as the members of tho family he was visiting, he re mained np and took hii shoes off before ascending tho stairs. A few nights after his return to hi3 home he lay down on a lounge and fell asleep. After sleeping soundly a half hour he arose, walked to the foot of the stairs, took off his shoes, and not being content with doing that, he drew off his dockings also. After waiting till all was quiet, the old bird came to life and took wing to rejoin her young, who were still engaged to their abortive assaults on the flowers. The desks of some men are curiosities ia this regard, and there is probably noce in town to compare with that of Francis B. Thurbor. The double desk used by II. K. Thui'- br and his brother dates back nearly hity years. It stands on four turned l-gs, has a sloping: writing board ari two small cases of pigeon holes, one at each side. F. B. Thurber's share of it is piled with papers clear across the ptT tion on which the owner is supposed to write. As a resul- that owner writes on a pad placed on his knees, and it is excessively funny to ee hira rise fclightly in his chair in order that he may reach over the barricade he has erected and dip ld pen into the ink. Mr. Thurber must have a marvelous memory to be able to find anything in the pile before him.
