Fair it f AUGUST 4,' iffll The Commoner. MR. BAILEY IS PETULANT Special dispatch to tho Chicago Tribune: Washington, D. C., July 27. Senator Bailey of Texas, tho chief defender of Lorlmor in the previous investigation of tho Illinois senatorial scandal, resigned today from the committee on privileges and elections. With Lorlmer whitewash behind him and tho Investigation of the Stephenson senatorial scan dal facing him, Bailey suddenly and effectually wafted himself out of the danger zone. This io regarded one of the most sensational developments in the history of the events pre ceding and following the whitewash of William Lorlmer by the senate in the last congress. As the champion of Lorimer the Texas senator has borne a large share of the burden of odium which tho country has bestowed upon the sena tors who voted to keep the Illinois boss in tho seat procured by bribery. In Texas, where he will be a candidate for re-election next year, Bailey has .suffered a merciless excoriation from press and public. Chairman Dillingham of tho committee on privileges and elections recently appointed Bailey a member of a subcommittee of five to examine tho charges of corruption in the elec tion of Senator. Stephenson of Wisconsin and report whether an investigation is warranted by the evidence; The other democrat on tho sub committee, is Paynter of Kentucky, who was de feated for renomination recently laTgely by his defense of Lorimer. Senator Bailey handed in his resignation this morning and at a late hour tonight he had not retracted it so far as could be learned. Whether he will stay resigned or will change his mind and decide that he never resigned at all as he did when severing his connection with the senate on March 4 last remains to be seen. Mr. Bailey says he is too buBy to give any of his time to the work of the committee. That is what he says in his formal official state ment given out for publication. But it appears from the reasons he has given his friends that he is extremely peevish as a result of his experi ences with tho previous Lorimer investigation and with the prospect of the approaching Stephenson inquiry. - The democratic organization In the senate will 'becalTed upon to fill the.. vacancy in the committee caused, by the resignation" of Mr. Bailey, that is, in the event the Texas senator does not renege.
