gcther. Thero Is nothing to cause
tho slightest criticism. But that Is
probably because tho writer never
carries them beyond tho marriage
ceremony.
For tho rest of the story wo must
look in the newspapers with their
records of divorco cases. Wo must
look particularly in tho dotails of
thoso cases which are particularly
exploited on account of tho financial
promlnenco of ono of tho persons
concerned.
Thoro wo seo that this "chum,"
this "good fellow" theory of a help
mate too frequently leads to a state
of things which may be described
as a competition to see which of the
wedded pair can drink tho most
liquor, be tho most extravagant, seek
pleasure with the most avidity, live
up, in a word, most conscientiously
to that exalted standard known as
"having a high old time."
Wo likewise seo that this sort of
"good fellowship" conducts by easy
stages to a divorce court. When a
man and woman take tho peculiar
view of their relations which is in
volved in tho adoption of the "good
fellowship" idea, when they regard
marriage as a sort of institution for
promoting unlimited indulgence,
they very quickly reach the conclu
sion that when tho pleasure palls,
as mere pleasure Inevitably does,
there is no particular reason for re
maining together.
Thero is a certain element of
poetic justice in tho troubles that
ensue. Tho woman who consents to
bo less than a womanly woman be
cause she is married and the man
who demands that his wifo shall
combine with tho resnectabilltv of
her position tho liberal views of
certain little respected types of
women both deserve all the annoy
ances to which their relations lead.
Of all the equivocal compliments
which the man who has seen some
thing of lifo and is capable of judg
ing it can pay to a woman tho com
pliment that she Is a "good fellow"
is perhaps the least flatterinc. Tr
puts her in a class in which ho wrmii
hardly like to seo his own woman
relatives llgure.
Still, wo suppose the 10 cent mag
azines will continue to present the
story without the epilogue. The idea
makes a great appeal to the thought
less, who are always in tho major
ity. Only a few people will see that
the continuation of the tale is in the
newspapers and that its moral is that
tho highest duty of a woman is to
be a women and not a- half-man.

HE WILL STICK TO "CHAMP"
It was a New York Sun editorial
on the remarks of Champ Clark that
referred to the distinguished Mis
sourian as "Beauchamp Clark." Of
course, moot people thought It was a
bit of pleasantry, and didn't think
that "Beauchamp," or, as the Eng-
lish would say, "Beecham," really
was Clark's name. And yet, such
Is the truth, according to one of his
close friends. It was asserted that
he was christened "James Beauchamp
Clark," but he decided to drop both
the "James" and the "Beau," and
become plain "Champ." It has been
suggested that, as the Missourian ad
vances in his political career, he
really ought to resume those other
names, but the assertion is made that
ho will remain "Champ" until the
end, and will not change the title,
even when he sits in the presidential
chair. St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
