figures being greatly added to."
Tho strike among the railroad em

The South' Dakota house of repre
sentatives by a vote of 50 to 28 passed

Radical measures are being taken
by tho health authorities of Ithaca,
N. Y., to stamp out the typhoid epi
demic which has been raging in that
city, particularly among the students
of Cornell university. Twenty men
under the direction of Dr. Soper have
been employed to co-operate with him
in stamping out the disease.
Tho trust known as the American
Window Glass company operating at
I'ittsDurg, Pa., on March u, announced
that on March 14 all the factories of
the company will close for the season,
and a large force of men will then be
put to work to equip them with ma
chinery that will displace many glass
workmen. It is said that this move
will greatly lessen the cost of produc
tion and increase the profits of the
company.
Cornell university located at Ithaca,
N. Y., recently made public a plan
whereby professors in the school are
to bo retired after attaining the ago ol
70 years with an annual pension o
$1,500 per year.
A court-martial called for the pur
pose of investigating the explosion on
the battleship Massachusetts which
resulted in the death of eight men
convened in tho navy yard at Pensa
cola, Fla,, on March 5 with Rear Ad
miral W. C. Wise as president En
sign Ward K. Wortman is alleged to
be responsible for the explosion ow
ing to his neglect of duty.
The Cuban reciprocity treaty is un
der discussion in the senate at Ha
vana. Some opposition is being made
to it, it being denounced as an Ameri
can scheme to keep European com
merce from Cuba. Another point
urged against it is that it will increase
tho profits of the sugar and tobacco
industries $6,000,000 annually.
On March G the state senate of Kan
sas passed resolutions providing that
a $1,500 silver service should be pur
chased for the new battleship Kansas.

On March 6 Governor Beckham of
Kentucky received and deposited for
collection checks aggregating $1,323,
999, paid by the United States govern
ment as interest on Kentucky's war
claim. He has called the state sinking
fund commission to meet Monday

to purchase all the outstanding bonds
of the state amounting to $1,000,000.
