Household Scrapbook . By Roberta Lee Sweaters When drying a sweater, make a hammock out of a piece of netting or thin material. Hang in the sun and lay the sweater in it. The hammock should be drawn out flat so that the sweater is not doubled over.^ This method will keep the sweater in shape. Toilet Perfume To make a toilet perfume mix two ounces of alcohol with one half ounce of orris-root. Keep it tightly corked in a bottle and shake thoroughly each time be fore using. Moths If a little turpentine is poured into the trunks, wardrobes or any other drawers, the moths will not harm the clothing stored in them. Bird Food Give the bird a little green food every few days. A pinch of ra^e, bird, or mustard seed if planted in a flower pot will sprout in a few days and soon grow into plants that are aceptable to birds. Canning Do not use doubtful sealing jars when canning vegetables. P i t some produce that is easy to keep such as jams or picklesi n un even or chipped jars. Alexander, noted engineer and contractor of Des Moines, Iowa, is being mentioned for the post of Minister to Haiti. In a recent chat with the former grand polemarch of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity in Des Moines, he re vealed that he had been checked by the FBI. Mr. Alexander said that he would accept the appoint ment if it is offered to him. Robert W. Lee, former Lin colnite and University of Ne braska student, made the April 23 issue of Jet magazine. It is the top article on page 17. Mr. Lee is a Los Angeles real estate broker. Whitney Young, Omaha Urban League executive secretary, was elected to the executive council of the Nebraska Welfare Associa tion at the organization’s 56th an nual conference held in Lincoln ovt.- the past week end. The mayor I emphasized in his proclamation the importance “of all citizens working together in the interest of civic progress.” He stated that “the Urban League is currently seeking to interest all Negro citi zens of Chicago in its program of self-betterment and community improvement.” With the stars: Lena Horne has been drawing large crowds and rave notices at the Chez Paree in Chicago. . . Nebraska i Modern Etiquette By ROBERTA LEE Q. Isn’t it improper for two persons who are introduced at a dinner to reach across the table to shake hands? A. Although -not exactly im proper, it does create an awk ward situation, and it is much better to refrain from shaking hands and merely nod your head in acknowledgement of a table in troduction. If, however, the other person does reach his hand across the table to you, you must not show any hesitation in accept ing it. Q. Is it permissible for a per son to use business letterheads for social correspondence? A. fro; business letterheads are for business only. Q. Would it be all right to mail out formal announcements of a bride’s second marriage? A. Yes, although it is not cus tomary. Q. Would it be all right for a girl to send a young man a birth day card, even though he has never send her a card or given her a gift. A. Yes; there is nothing at all wrong with this. This is merely a thoughtful gesture, and the young man would be presumptu ous to think it anything else. Q. When giving an informal dinner, isn’t t all right for the hostess to say, “Just sit anywhere you wish”? A. No; this can often lead to confusion. It is too much like playing the old game of “musical chair.” The hostess should always designate where each guest should sit. Q. What is the most popular boutonniere for ushers at a church wedding? A. The white carnation is prob ably the most popular. Q. When a woman has been dining with a friend and her Omaha has announced the en gagement of her niece, Miss Florentine Crawford and Nelson P. Williams, son of Mr. Nelson Williams Sr. of Fernanda Beach, Fla. Miss Crawford is a graduate of the University of Nebraska. She received her master’s degree here in 1951. The supreme task of education today and tomorow is the unveil ing for the people of the under developed areas of the world the j truth that Democracy, and not [Communism, will satisfy their hunger for dignity, status and sig nificance. These underdeveloped regions may be the final battleground on which the issue of freedom will be settled, Dr. Ben Mark Cher rington, director of the Institute of International Education, Den ver, Tuesday told the 25th annual Honors Convocation at the Uni versity of Nebraska. More than 330 University stu dents were honored for excellence in scholarship. Forty-three sen iors possessing superior scholar ship were individually honored on the stage of the Coliseum. Dr. Cherrington told the stu dents that there are two other areas of life where “they as scholars must be ever vigilant in the preservative enlargement of j freedom.” They are, the native Nebraska said, the universities and the na tional government. “This Univer sity and indeed all universities hostess has no maid, is it all right for the woman to help her hostess clean off the table, stack the dishes, and the like? A. She may offer to help, but she must never insist if tile host ess declines her offer. Q. When a girl is being intro duced to a man whom she be lieves she has met before, should she mention this? A. If his memory does not seem so good as hers, it would! be better not to make mention of the former meeting, and merely acknowledge with, “How do you do, Mr. Lee.” Q. Isn’t it the duty of the bridgegroom to buy his own wed ding ring? A. No. He should, of course, buy his bride’s ring, but she; should buy the bridgegroom’s ring. Q. There is inevitable pressure for the State when it trespasses in the area reserved for the freedom of the individual citizen.” But the former chancellor of Denver University warned that the continual improvement of education for citizenship in our universities and the extending and fortification of freedom in Amer ica is not enough.
