News/ From Quinn Chapel Another large crowd turned out last Sunday to hear our pastor, Rev. John R. Harris, preach one of his best sermons. The subject: “Temptation — Bread Words”. Eight persons united with the church. A representative group accom panied him at 4 p.m. to the New man Methodist church when he preached another soul-stirring sermon from the subject: “Build ing Highways”. Among the visitors noted at the morning service: Mrs. Eva Ed wards, St. Louis, Missouri, and Mrs. Lucy Hubbard, Lincoln, Neb. Friends desiring to help fill the Christmas baskets may do so by bringing food, clothing, toys or anything that can be used around the home, to the church next Sun day. Rev. Harris will use as his sub ject next Sunday “God’s Christ mas Gift to the World”. The pas tor wishes to express through the columns of The Voice his deep appreciation to the people of Lin coln for the way in which they have received him and co-operated with him in his program of King dom building. Hobe Jones, University of Ne braska’s top miler, will run in the Sugar Bowl Dec. 30, at New Or leans. Preliminary track is scheduled Tuesday, Dec. 16, at the Univer sity of Nebraska’s East Stadium at 7 p.m. One of the spotlights of the meet will be Bob Fairchild. Finals will be held Thursday, Jan. 15. Events include 60-yard dash, 60 yard high and low hurdles, one lap run, 880-yard run, 440, 12 pound shot, broad jump, high jump and pole vault. Two White Sox dueled for base stealing honors. Orestes (Minnie) Minoso beat out Jim Rivera by one base. Minoso stole 22 bases to Rivera’s 21. Ferris Fain, Philadelphia Ath letics first baseman, has won the American League batting cham pionship for the second straight year. Fain batted .327. Joe Bertrand and Notre Dame won their third straight basketball games by downing Marquette 84-64. I Carlene Foxall, Stella Woodlee, Winifred Winston, Oline Foxall ; ,and Paul Kidd appeared in the 600 voice chorus presentation of Handel’s “Messiah.” The chorus, accompanied by the University orchestra was directed by Dr. David Foltz. The singing of the ‘Messiah” is an annual event on your campus. Those of you who missed it this year should make it a point to go in ’53. Next Sun day at 8:30 p.m. in the rotunda of the State Capitol, music lovers from the city and surrounding ter ritory will join together for mass caroling. The program will be divided into two phases. At 8 p.m., i Dale Underwood of the Lincoln Chapter of The American Organ ists Guild will play a 30 minute organ prelude. Call to Caroling will be by a brass quartette, Jack McKie, Roger Brendle, Dean Hatch and Paul Bieberstein. The Committee in charge of the mass caroling is not attempting to organize tours over the city. The request is that all groups make their own contact and arrange ments and help to see that no shut-in is forgotten. Invitations to participate have been extended to over 200 choral groups. Anyone and everyone is invited to attend and participate.
