Present Day Application By Frederick D. Jordan Los Angeles, California The command to honor parents has an almost exhaustless num ber of meanings, but one of its fundamentals is to meet the chal lenge of life and measure up to it in such a way as to be a credit. Much is said about honoring par ents and often children are severely criticized because of their attitude of disrespect toward them. Parents themselves are largely to blame for this. Have you said to your child, “Oh, here comes the insurance man, I haven’t his money, tell him I’m not at home” —then whipped the child later for telling you a lie? The command to honor is reflexive, for at the same time it says to parents, be honorable. Parental goodness must be genuine and unaffected in or der to evoke the reverence of one’s children. Jesus said, he is my father and my mother who does the will of my Father. Are you a real parent, doing the will of our Father? Christian children will honor and care for their par ents as a matter of principle even when they do not deserve it. Obedience to this law in the case of many may be like bread cast upon the water. The “accident of birth” does not make one a par ent that deserves honor and re spect. THE HOME OF COMPLETE BANKING SERVICE NATIONAL BANK OF COMMERCE 13th and O Streets, Lincoln, Nebraska MEMBER F. D. For this I am duly apologetic and bow my head in shame. Yesterday and today I am fill ing in as secretary for Joe’s em ployer. It is rather interesting and I’m learning but it is rather hard on the powers that be for 1 haven’t done this type of work very much and none recently. They have a telegraph sending and receiving machine and yes terday morning before any one else arrived it practically shook itself off the table trying to get me to acknowledge a telegram. Needless to say it was of no avail for I didn’t have the slightest idea which of the keys to touch. Secretaries are at a premium here and so they are putting up with1 me for a couple of days. The week erfd of April 19, we loaded the trailer with some things and headed for Eldon, Mis souri, where my niece lives. Among other things we took Mother Lytle’s foot pedal organ. It was received with a great deal of enthusiasm and on Tuesday evening it received its baptism of music when the neighbors gath ered for a “singin’.” It was a great experience to listen to the voices singing old hymns and folk songs. Joe is beginning a new job the first of the month. He is to be nig'ht foreman in a newspaper plant in one of the suburbs. It is close to our home and not so much traffic from here to there. Our dream at the present is to have a weekly newspaper some day and so this will give him some good experience. Later in the fall I may go in as a Lino-, type operator on the same shift.
