HANCOCK FOB ANP • General Eisenhower and the Dixiecrats The political plot is thickening.' A few days ago a southern radio commentator was heard to say that General Eisenhower would not be a candidate for the presi dency unless the people de manded it. “Then,” said the commentator, “10,000 southerners should bom bard the General with letters and^ pleas to him to lead in the coming elections.” In other words, the needed command of the people would come with the demand of the South. If the South commanded; the general, he could regard that as & mandate from the people. There is some curious food for thought in this radio comment. The extent to which the commen-( tator was voicing the sentiments ol the pro-Eisenhower segment of _ our voting population is the ex-' tent to which the Negroes should be careful in their coming polit ical allegiance. I know the Dixiecrats better < f than I know General iKe; oui 11 he speaks the language of the Dixiecrats he is not the man for the presidency. It is not too early for the country to ponder this question. The White House is not the place for a Dixiecrat.^ior a man who is the favorite of the Dixiecrats. nor for a man who courts their political support. Some months ago, this writer expressed the fear that General j Ike was flirting with the Dixie crats. Passing events are corro borating the conclusion that Gen eral Ike is the Dixiecratic candi date and as such should be re jected. The Dixiecrats are too anti-Negro and too narrow in their sympathies to choose a President of the United States. The Dixiecrats are bitterly op posed to the full integration of. the Negro. If General Ike is their, standard bearer, he, too, must be apposed to the Negro’s integra-* tion. This must be his overt or "" covert profession of political faith. The elevation of such a man to the presidency would be a political blunder of major magnitude. Negroes have been step-citizens of this country long enough. The time is at hand for their full in tegration. Nothing shoit of this can ease the nation’s smitten con-| science. Nothing short of this will satisfy the demands of the sacri fices the Negro has made to make this nation what it is. Negroes may well be afraid oT the porposed alliance between the Dixiecrats and the Dixiecratic minded Republicans. No less fear ful should they be of the proposed candidacy of General Eisenhower., At heart, the general is a Dixie-1 crat. There are many things the i South needs, but Gen. Eisenhower ! I for President is not one of them. !
