Social Briefs By Dorothy H. Greene Home visiting his parents for a few days was Frank Burden, jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bur den, sr. He left Monday to re turn to Tucson, Ariz., where he is stationed. Worshiping with the congrega tion at Quinn Chapel A. M. E. church Sunday morning were Mrs. Lela Beck and her daughter, Louise Patterson from Beatrice. Mrs. Helen Gill. 2208 T street has recently returned from To peka, Kas. While there she saw Virginia Boydston, who formerly lived in Lincoln. Miss Maxine M. Stith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Stith, 2411 So. 8th street left Wednes day night to resume her nurses training at Provident hospital in Chicago, 111. A surprise baby shower was given for Mrs. Golden Brooks, wife of the Rev. J. B. Brooks, pastor of Quinn Chapel by the senior choir. Raymond Botts is president of the choir. Motoring to San Francisco, Calif, was Mr. and Mrs. William Burns. They were accompanied by their son, Billy. There w'as an open house held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Ambers New Year’s day. The 1 house was beautifully decorated 1 and many guests were in attend- j ance. Mrs. Ed Hammond is expected to return soon from San Fran cisco, Calif.t where she has spent the past two months with her sister-in-law, Mrs. William Ham rnond, who is hospitalized there. Accompanying her will be Mrs. William Hammond’s children who will live with their grandmother while their mother is recuperat ing. Mrs. Irma Robinson, one of Kansas City’s most noted manu facturers of cosmetics has re turned to her home after spend ing part of the holiday season with a cousin, Mrs. John Johnson. Mrs. Robinson, a member of Ebe nezer A.M.E. church in Kansas City, Mo., was tendered courte sies by Mrs. William Beach and Mrs. William B. Davis, both for mer Kansas Citians. Mrs. John Johnson entertained during the holidays for co-work ers and their friends. Invited guests were: Miss Virginia Davis, Verne Wilson, Miss Mary Samp son, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Shearron ■and Mr. and Mrs. Virgil McGin nis. Mrs. Johnson was pleasantly surprised on her birthday, Jan 13, by co-workers. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hall, Den ver, Colo., were in the city a couple of days on business the past week. Starting off first with Friday night, Jan. 6, quite a few teens were over to Cecil Hatcher’s hav ing a real gone party. Some of the teens there were: Betty Bow man, Donald Botts, Loretta Mc Williams, Maurice Russell, Hazel Wilson, Bobby Graham, Doris Roberts, Howard Martin and many others. * * * Jan. 7, the teens had another gala affair. Some of the teen-age girls gave a party for Bobby Gra ham and Donald Botts out at Bobby Graham’s house. Some of the guests there were: Betty Wil son, George Riley, Maurice Crouch, Delores Bowen, Phyllis Holcomb, Howard Martin, Beverly Holcomb, George Alexander, Vonna Finley, Albert Bowren and many others. SURPRISE DATE OF THE WEEK Betty Wilson and Howard Martin * * * We have a new visitor in our fair city. He happens to be a cousin of mine—Howard Martin from Kansas City, Mo. He is plan ning on making his home here. Seems as though a few of our teens have already made his ac quaintance. Hummmm??? * * * Sunday, Jan. 8, Betty Bowman was hostess to several of the teen couples at the home of her aunt, Mrs. Viola Butcher. They reported having a swell time. * * * Also having a gay time, Sunday night w'ere four of our teens at the Bowen house. They were: Delores Bowen, Charles Friles, Vonna Finley and Albert Bowen. * * * Calling all girls, the Urban League is starting a girls’ basket ball team and they are playing a team from Omaha Jan. 28. Play ers of the team are: Norma Dunn, Emma White, Barbara Moody. PEAK of QUALITY HOUSEHOLD HINTS ] By Mrs. lirevs Millet Phone 2-4051 | Low Cost Main Dish 1 medium onion 2 tbsp. drippings 1 cup cooked tomatoes Yz lb. hamburger or ground ham seasoning 1 cup cooked macaroni or noodles Fry the onions (minced) in the drippings. Add other ingredients and bake about 40 minutes in a slow oven. Serve with a salad and small dessert. This recipe good for using leftover meats. Fried Chitterlings Prepare chitterlings and boil. When tender, drain well. Cut in 2-inch squares. Dip in a good batter and fry in deep fat. Drain. j Serve hot with assorted salad plate and pickles. Applesauce Drop Cookies 1 cup sugar Yz cup shortening 1 egg 1 cup applesauce (other fruit may be used instead) 1 teaspoon soda Y% teaspoon nutmeg _ with you, they enjoyed it very much. * * * Friday, Jan. 13, Bobby Graham and Donald Botts left our fair, city to report back to there ships in Newport, R. I., and Nor fork, Va. I’ll bet Betty Bow man and Hazel Wilson are feeling kind of lonesome. We share your sorrow girls. * * * Donavan Gatus and Lemuel Jennings were hosts at a gath ering of the younger teens at the j home of Donavan Gatus on Sat urday evening. Games were played after which refreshments were served including punch, sand wiches and cookies. There were 14 guests in attendance. Well that’s all for right now. See you next week, ELOISE. Chopped Beet Salad 6 cooked beets 1 tbsp. grated onion 1 tbsp. sugar 1 tsp. salt Va cup salad dressing 1 tbsp. lemon juice l tbsp. vinegar Parsley (to taste) Dash paprika Drain juice from beets. Place in bowl and chop fine. Add grated onion, salt, sugar, lemon juice and vinegar to salad dressing. Mix well. Add beets. Let stand in ice box for 1 hour. Mold into a ball. Place on a lettuce leaf. Add a piece of parsley and a dash of paprika. Serves 6. The United Church Women’s Kensington club met Friday at the home of Mrs. Ida Hightower and elected the following officers for the year: Mrs. Virginia Brown, president; Mrs. Claudine Adkins, vice president; Mrs. Wilma Todd, secretary; Mrs. Loretha Shepard, assistant secretary; Mrs. Irma Shepard, treasurer, and Mrs. Brevy Miller, chairman of sick committee. The next meeting will be Friday, Jan. 27, in the after noon at the home of Mrs. Malenda Estes.
