The Academy awards presentation broadcast from here March 24 via ABC will have an estimated lis tening audience of 98,000,000. The figure was supplied by the state department. It represents the number of people reached by the short-wave relay of the ABC pro gram over the world-wide facili ties of the armed forces radio service. Among the 70 overseas pickup stations will be the world’s northernmost radio station at Point Barrow, Alaska, and the southernmost one at Pago, Pago, Samoa. 28 MEN PROVIDE TWO MINUTES OF MUSIC Although the music on the “Amos ’n’ Andy” show serves merely as the curtain riser, and closer and as a 120 second mu sical intermission to the antics of the comics, it takes 28 top per formers to put it across. Because “Amos and Andy” believe only the best should mal^e up their radio show, they’ve placed top musical director Jeff Alexander as head man of the 16 man or chestra and 12 man chorus. The Jubilaires quartet and a male oc tet make up the chorus. The one song performed on the show is usually highly specialized such as a spiritual, a folk song or a song story. Thus the musical moments on the show, take 28 men and a lot more dollars. AIR WAVES OBSERVE BROTHERHOOD WEEK “Brotherhood Week” was ob served well on the radio. This was a great way to make America aware of a great cause. The Co lumbia Broadcasting System and Station KLZ, the network’s Den ver affiliate, were the recipients of annual awards made by the National Conference of Christians and Jews for outstanding contri butions during the past year to mutual understanding and respect among people of diverse back grounds. The award to the network was made for three individual broad casts: “The Drey fuss Case,” a newscast re-enactment of the his toric French “cause celebre” pre sented on CBS’ “You Are There”; and for two special documentary dramas, “The Friend and Peter Stuyvesant” and “For This We Live.” The award to Station KLZ was made for its over-all contribu tions in this area of broadcasting. THE EVANS CLEANERS — LAUNDERERS | i Save Money Use our Cash and Carry Plan 333 No. 12th St. Dial 2-6961 r 5 Sunday School j I Lesson i f Theme: Jesus’ Ministry to Hu man Need. Text: Mark 5; 6:31-44; Luke 7-18-23; 19:1-10. The Restoration to Life of the Daughter of Jairus. Mark 5:21-42. Again we are impressed with the calm confidence with which Jesus faces human ill. Love is matched by power. The sympathy and kindness of His words to the poor woman who had edged her way through the crowd to touch fringe of His garment, the quick con cern for the feelings of the father who had been told that there was no hope now since the child had died; the tender words to the lit tle girl and the fatherly care of her hunger—in all of these a ten der and gracious care for the needs of people is joined with a serene consciousness that these needs can be met. Yet notice that Jesus depends on the faith of those whom He seeks to serve. It is the faith of the woman that has made her whole (v 34) though virtue had gone out of Him (v. 30). Pairus is bidden to silence his fears in faith (v. 36). The great ministry of Jesus is the arousal of hope and faith. Then men can look to Him and profit by His leadership. The story of the New Testament is the story of a great expectancy aroused in men and validated by the gracious act of God in Christ. It is the story of a great victory of faith (I John 5:4) and of the promise that ever greater vic tories are in store for those who share the faith which Jesus came to kindle in the hearts of men (John 14:12). To us in our trou bled world, as to Jairus long ago, Jesus says, “Fear not, only be lieve.” The Message to John the Bap tist, Luke 7:18-23. The great thing about this passage is that John’s doubt was met by the demonstration of a great ministry to human needs. That must be the great credential of the Church. If it can say to the great hearts of the world, languishing in its dungeons of neglect and ill-treat i The I First National Bank i of Lincoln 10th & “O” St. Member F.D.l.C. But notice that the crowning glory of Jesus’ ministry is the preaching of the gospel to the poor. Really good news, giving new hope, new power, new life, —that is the gospel. Is that what we are preaching—all of us in the Church, not simply the min isters? To the poor—the neglect ed, the underprivileged. The pa tient bearers of heavy burdens— that is the congregation to which the gospel was preached by Jesus. Are we reaching that congrega tion?
