Mr. Brooks, pastor of the Quinn Chapel AME Church, was a prominent figure in the civic life of Omaha where he spent seven years as pastor of Allen Chapel AME Church. For what is said to be the first time in the nation’s history, a group of three Negro insurance companies band ed together to take the lead in rebuilding a city's slum areas last week when they announced plans to construct new homes in one of 1 Chicago’s worst blighted districts The three firms committing themselves to improving an area were the Supreme Liberty Life I Insurance company, the Metro j politan Mutual Assurance corn j pany and the Jackson Mutual Life ; Insurance company. Their plans are to start building by spring. I Two other colored insurance com j panies, the Victory Mutual Life 1 Insurance company and the Unity i Mutual Life Insurance company, also may enter the program. Truman K. Gibson, Sr., war time aide to the secretai-y of wai. president of Supreme Liberty and leading spokesman for the plan, said that the program will begin with a 50 homes project in a two square block area. “This will be only a start of a six block develop ment,” he added. The Chicago land clearance commission, in charge of buying slum land for rebuilding by pri vate firms, has already approved the insurance companies’ plans. Mayor Martin H. Kennelly took the first action last week by introducing a resolution to the City Council authorizing the land clearance commission to purchase the area to be rebuilt. In supporting this slum clear ance program financially, the col ored firms added their names to that pf the New York Life In surance company to redevelop an area once considered one of Chi cago’s best residential districts. I Because of his excellent play in the annual Hoosier Intercollegi ate tournament at Butler last week Sophomore Bill Garrett of Indiana was selected forward on the all Indiana Intercollegiate five. In two games Garrett tallied 24 points as his team won one j and lost one in the four school play.' Indiana lost to Butler and defeated Notre Dame. Purdue was also in the meet. Garrett is the first Negro to play on an Indiana squad in the Big Nine.
