The conventions are august gatherings with representatives from more than 90 undergraduate and 110 graduate chapters from all over the country. « * * Mr. Willis Palmer is spending his Christmas vacation with his mother in Los Angeles, Calif. * * * Mr, Obbie Brown is spending the vacation with his^ wife, Euge nia. He says things are quiet in the college town of Tyler, Tex., where he is professor of chemistry at Wiley. * $ s Miss Barbra Kelley is spend ing Christmas vacation with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jewell Kelley. She will return to her teaching duties in Vinita, Okl., shortly after the first of the year. 4= * 4s Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Pierce proved themselves most gracious hosts at their home Christmas day in serving a very elaborate turkey dinner. The club has 12 members and they meet every Thursday. Officers of the club are as follows: Presi dent, John Brown; vice presi dent, Victor McWilliams; secre tary-treasurer, Verne Wilson; sergeant-at-arms, Frank Nevels. I hope the boys will have much success in their organization. **** **** **** Speaking of clubs the Klique Klub had its annual semi-formal Christmas party December 21, in the Urban League lounge. The lounge was nicely decorated with the usual decorations plus candles and a Christmas tree which fur nished the very romantic light. There was so much to do that it wasn’t ur?til the refreshments were served that I took note of the Kliques and their guests. At table (1) I found Betty Wilson, Robbie Powell, Verne Wilson and Victor McWilliams; at table (2) Delores Bowen, Phyllis Holcomb, George Alexandra and LaVanda Hill; at table (3) Freddie Powell, Joyce Williams, Richard Hol comb and Maurice Croach; at table (4) Susie White Hall, My self, William Broaden and Frank Nevels. Refreshments were indi vidual tea cakes and egg nog ice cream, candy and nuts. The girls exchanged gifts and I saw quite a few lovely corsages. Kliques not attending the party were Flo Crawford and Jeanne Malone. **** **** **** Miss Maxine Stith is home on leave from Provident Nursing school in Chicago, 111., for the holidays. She came to Lincoln from Fairbury with her mother to spend Christmas with her father and relatives. *«** **** **** For Best Dressed Boy of the Year “1948” I have chosen Nate Casteel. I’m sure you will agree on that point also. **** **** **** Gordon Delaney is in Lincoln •for the holidays. He is a student at Griffith Opportunity School in Denver, Colo., where he is be coming an expert body and fen der man. **** **** **** Roger (LaVanda) Hill is spending a lively interlude to the grind at Langston U. while home for the holidays. **** **** **** The “I” House has been de serted by Florentine Crawford, Dorothy Chapman, Celestine Lightner and Eloise Jones,. I___: HOUSEHOLD HI NTS >' ■ By Mrs. Brev> Miller Phone 2-4051 ___ _ __ • String Beans with Cheese Sauce 2 <4 cupe string beans 2 tablespoons butter or margarine 2 tablespoons flour 1 egg, slightly beaten H teaspoon salt ! H teaspoon mustard | =S cup grated American cheese 1 14 cup hot liquid off beans Season and heat beans to boil ing. (Cook 20 minutes if home canned.) Melt fat in top of double boiler; add flour and stir until well blended. Add milk slowly; cook and stir mixture until it thickens. Pour it over egg slowly, stirring constantly. Add salt, mustard, cheese and hot ! liquid. Cook until cheese is melted and mixture is thickened. Serve beans on buttered strips of toast and cover with cheese sauce. Serves six. Apple Pie Filling 6 large tart apples 2 tablespoons flour % cup granulated sugar cup firmly packed brown sugar 3* teaspoon cinnamon % teaspoon nutmeg % teaspoon ginger H teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon lemon juice 3 tablespoons butter Pare and quarter apples. Cut each quarter into 4 slices. Put in saucepan, add ^4 cup cold i water, and simmer for 5 minutes ; or until tender. Cool. Fill pastry shell generously. Combine flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, spices, salt and lemon juice. Sprinkle mixture over apples and dot with butter. Moisten edges of under crust. Adjust top crust in which six vents like chevrons have been cut—one in each cut piece. Trim edges and seal with fingers or fork. Bake at 450 degrees F., for 10 minutes; then at 350 degrees F., and bake 45 minutes. Yield: one 9-inch pie. Serves six. Chicken Dumplings 1 egg. well beaten 1 cup sweet milk 1 pint flour *4 teaspoon ralt 2 teaspoons baking powder Drop this batter by spoonfuls into the chicken broth, just checked from boiling. Let boil 15 minutes without stirring. Do not cover. Spiced Apricots. 1 lb. dried apricot* — 1 cup vinegar 1H cups sugar H teaspoon cinnamon 16 teaspoon cloves Cook apricots until barely ten- . der; drain. Combine sugar, ^ vinegar and spices and boil for 3 minutes. Add the apricots and cook slowly for 10 minutes. If desired, these can be put in jars and sealed. Funeral Service For Mi»s Gladys Easley Funeral service for Miss Gladys Easley, 42, who died Wednesday, Dec. 22 after a long illness, were held Monday, Dec. 27 at Newman Methodist Church, with Rev. W. A. Greene and Rev. T. O. Mc Williams, Jr., officiating. She is survived by her son, Ernest Cruder, three sisters. Izetta Monroe, and Erma Saunders of S a g i a n w, Mich.; Josephine t Vaughn, Bay City, Mich., and a brother, Clifford Easley, Kansas City, Mo.
