Adventists Form Youth Federation CHICAGO. (ANP). A tradition of nearly a half century’s stand ing was modified here last week when the Seventh-day Adventist young people of the Chicago metropolitan area in a special rally, held at the Shiloh S. D. A. church unanimously approved a federation structure for the ’ Young People’s Missionary Vol unteer societies of eight churches in Chicago and its environs. The delegates were agreed that this forward move was believed to be an unprecedented step in the history of the missionary volunteer activities in this area. Hearty endorsement was given the plan by a group of high con ference officials present for the occasion. Foremost among these officials was Elder L. E. Len heim, president of the Lake Union conference. He, with Elders W. A. Nelson, T. M. Fountain and F. N. Crowe, and other local conference officials gave the young people the green light. Thus waved on, the jubilant delegates lost no time in adopting a provisional constitution, and electing a staff of eight officers for the new federation. Equally distributed among the eight churches, the officers made speeches pledging the allegiance and resources of the societies they represented to the progress of this federation of societies, of ficially named—the Chicago Met ropolitan Federation of Mission ary Volunteer societies. , The purpose of the federation was set forth by LeRoy Heming way, newly-elected president. This, he dictated, would create a united body, operating with eight cylin ders instead of one, geared to roar to its spiritual goals. To stimulate continual striving toward these goals, Walter J. Kisack, the local conference young people’s executive, an nounced a series of prizes for specified achievements. These prizes consisted of an expen sively bound, illuminated Bible, a course of selected books, and a set of Champlin encyclopedias. A literal roar of approval arose from the enthusiastic delegates. It made Mr. Kisack smile broadly as he set the time of the next federation meet for a month hence. ‘Honey’ of School Case WASHINGTON. (ANP). Thur good Marshall, chief counsel of the NAACP, in discussing segregation in higher education before the conference of Pres'dents of the Negro Land-Grant college last week, said the NAACP is planning a “honey” of a case. “You know,” he said, the tech nique is to admit a Negro student and put him off all by himself. Well, one southern state has built a $6,000,000 laboratory for nuclear physics. We are going to get a Negro to apply for instruction and sit back and watch them build this Negro a $6,000,000 laboratory so he can smash his atoms privately.” - -----"—1 | Sports Scope | Robinson and Canipanella Honored NEW YORK. (ANP). More than 300 persons joined with the 135th St. branch Y.M.C.A. Wednesday evening in honoring Jackie Robin son and Roy Campanella with a banquet. The two members of the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team are now members of the Y’s ath letic department and Monday aft ernoon they took over their new coaching duties of the juniors. Louis Charged MANCHESTER, N. H. (ANP). Howard W. Northridge, chairman of the New Hampshire Athletic | commission, charged here last week that Joe Louis is “hurting boxing” by his exhibition tour in which he faces “handpicked op ponents,” and called upon NBA President Abe Green to “look into” Louis’ current tour. Northridge, also NBA’s New England co-ordinator, said the ex hibition tour “replete with 16 ounce gloves and handpicked op ponents is hurting boxing and does not enhance the reputation of a great champion. The fans should be given more for their money than the champion of the world using 16-ounce gloves against an inferior opponent.” Louis recently appeared in New England with bouts at Boston and New Haven, Conn. Bivins-Louis Bout CLEVELAND. (ANP). Jimmy Bivins, wartime heavyweight star, reopened a cut over champion Joe Louis’ left eye in a six-round ex hibition bout here last week, but came out second best just the same. Louis was content to jab away during the first four rounds as Bivins concentrated his attack on the sore eye. In the fifth and sixth the champion opened up and pummeled Bivins. He received the injured eye in an exhibition in Boston Nov. 8 when he v and Johnny Shkor accidently bumped heads. A crowd of 10,086 jammed the arena to see the affair.
