We have oeen hearing a lot about leadership as it regards or ganizations, homes and the churches in our communities in recent months and today a young woman, Mrs. Lenora Roberts, president of the B. T. U. of Mt. Zion Baptist Church brought in an article which she wished to have published for the benefit of her class work. I told her that I believed that the community at large should share the lesson, “What Will Make Our Church Strong?” The speaker for the Thanksgiv ing service which was held at the church will be cemented together Streets made the statement in his introduction that he didn’t know what would become of Lincoln’s Negro civilizaion. That in all of his 20 years of ministery, travel ing over many sections of the country he had never seen people so lax where their church was concerned. There were a lot of Amens, from representatives of all of the churches. In Mrs. Roberts’ article she pic tures Paul after he had made a heart stirring appeal to the Ephesians to live right, plan right, think right, talk right, and in short to be the right kind of church, telling them that a strong church will be centered together by love; that the bond of union in a church is love for one another and for Christ, and if for any reason that bond is weakened, if affection evaporates, then disinte gration of the church follows. Then she says, “if a church quar *rels it has lost its usefulness in a community. Jesus Said, A new commandment I give unto you. That you love one another; By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples if ye love one another.” Then I especially liked the con clusion, “A strong church is made up of people who reproduce Christ in their daily lives, and they are concerned with the salvation of others.” She says that a church will grow stronger when it under stands the value of time. By this she could mean many things. We often talk about the “good old days” but I wonder if we apply ourselves today as they did in those days. In a survey of a large American city it was found that more than nine times as much attention was giveA to the life, customs, and citizenship of the ancient world than to the same topics in our own United States. The welfare of any community is dependent upon its local leader ship. Leaders are guided by the people they serve and the co-op eration which they receive. More careful analyses and greater knowledge of the facts would temper these criticisms which are passed from door to door. We all should shoulder responsibilities in eliminating the stupidity and errors which records the failures in our churches and our com munity. Mrs. Roberts closes with this 1 Jaqjc dgsL Qhaifcik. It wiH pay every blood-washed Christian to re-read Revelation and ask guidance of the Holy Spirit to interpret its meaning in world events that are happening in our present day. Our first scripture, in today’s lesson is the second of seven let ters, in John 2 and 3, addressed to the churches in Asia Minor. This letter to the church of Smyrna. Polycarp was the pastor of this church. A man a generation later wrote of him: “Polycarp had been a dis ciple of the Apostle John and he had told many things concerning John. Smyrna was the martyr church. When Polycarp was arrested and brought before the governor, he was offered his freedom if he would curse Christ. But he re plied: “For eighty-six years I j have served Jesus Christ, and He has done me nothing but good. Now how could I curse Him, my Lord and Savior.” For his faith and loyalty, he was burned alive A new persecution is to come upon the Church in the last days of our age. This is taken up in the last half of our lesson. There will be a great multitude saved out of this tribulation period. People out of every nation, kindred, tongues and people.
