TEN WAYS TO KILL A BABY!! An interesting article was han ded to me for publication. I have an idea that she had The Voice in mind. The title of the article was “How To Kill a Baby.” How ever, it may be applied to any organization. This speech was given by C. R. Mackenzie at the first meeting of a new club. “I am sure that not one of you has come here with the deliberate in tention of killing “Our Baby,” but there may be some of us, myself included, who might easily and inadvertently do serious injury to it if we don’t watch ourselves carefully. And so I am going to give you a list of ways by which this “baby” of ours can be serious ly injured, if not completely slaughtered. First, don’t bother to attend the meetings, particularly if the weathther is bad, or if there is an attractive dance or picture on that night. Second, when you do attend, al ways arrive late, and make as much disturbance as possible in getting to your place. Third, always find fault with the work of the Committee and of other members, but don’t men tion it in the meeting. After wards you can tell everybody how things should have been done. Fourth, never accept an office. It is easier to sit back and criti cize than do things. Fifth, if you are not appointed on a committee, get sore about it, but if you are appointed, don’t bother to attend committee meet ings. Sixth, do no more yourself than you must, but when other mem bers unselfishly use their ability to help matters along, howl that the club is being run by a clique. Seventh, hold back your dues as long as possible, or forget it altogether. It’s the secretary’s job to keep on reminding you. Eighth, keep your eye open for something to find fault with.— resign, and get your friends to resign too. Ninth .take every critism you receive as “personal spite and jealously,” and be insulting to your critic, and put him in his place. Tenth, never suggest anything constructive or helpful. Wait for the “other fellow to do it, and then while he is speaking, criticize what he is saying, talking in aud ible tones to your neighbor. There are other ways by which “Our Baby” can be killed. If you can think of them, be on guard against them. We want this in fant to grow up into a strong and healthy adult, and it is now up to each one of us to see that it is nurtured and supported so that it may increase in wisdom and sta ture until it is able to take its rightful place as one of the finest fellowship and inspirational or ganizations.” -o To the Editor of the Voice: It is good that we can work together for democracy and equa lity in this, our nation! Not equa lity of the lesser things, but of equality of opportunity for each, is our goal for the present and future. Mrs. X has said that God meant for things to stay as they were made, but if this were true, then civilization, culture, all re finement and the progress made by people of any race would be wrong in His sight. I am proud of my Negro friends and hope they are proud of me. Most of them are my equal or superior in intelligence, charm, and the art of being real people. I blush in shame for my own race in their lack of understanding and negli gence of the problems faced by their fellow citizens. “The Voice” is a step in the right direction, let’s support it. The Colorless Friend -0 Guest At Crete Conference Miss Katherine Thompson was invited to attend the Congrega tional and Evangelical and Re form Church Conference held on the Doane College Campus at Crete, Nebraska. Miss Thompson attended on Thursday, July 17 and participated directly in the days activities. An interesting discussion was held in the after noon by the 125 women attending, “Woman’s Place in the Communi ty.” With special emphasis on “How Woman may Better Race Relations in Their Community.” A very effected Vespers service was held in the evening. Followed by pictures of “The Races of Man kind,” and “A Tight Wade.” Miss Thompson says she had an exceptional nice day with the honor of learning many things which will prove extremely bene ficial. B. Davis We cannot start too soon pre paring our children to face the problems of which they are sure to meet as surely as they live. We love them, and that fact may make it hard for us to understand that other people are annoyed with their pranks, which to us may be so cute. Too much stress cannot be placed on the trend of 'heir thoughts and conversation with and about other people. We all know there is not much fun connected with being an only cowboy in a backyard rodeo, and the little G. I. who has to dig his fox hole all alone is going to have a lonesome time hiding in it. Help him to make friends with other children as well as you help him with learning how to eat and relish the different foods he may eat daily, it is as necessary to his well being. Besides a person who learns how to make and keep friends when he’s young has a head start on happy adulthood. You must know how to get along with the other fellow in this world and the sooner in life you learn the secret of how to do it, the better for you.
