'We of The Lincoln Voice appreciate your cooperation. Applesauce cake by A Reader 1 cup sugar 1 cup applesauce #2 cup butter or part lard 2 eggs Vz teaspoon nutmeg 1 level teaspoon soda, mixed with the applesauce. 1 teaspoon baking powder in 2 cups flour. 1 cup chopped nuts Cream together shortening and *ugar, add eggs, beat well. “Sift together flour, nutmeg, baking powder, add alternately with ap plesauce to creamed mixture, add floured nut meats. Bake in a moderate oven (350 degrees F) one hour. Let stand until cold. Remove cake from pan. A -a ■ wmmmmmm". iihimi ■i—mmm Tossed Salad and Tomato Soup Dressing Jessie McIntosh Break a head of lettuce in pieces and slice a Chinese Cab bage. Quarter an unpeeled cucum ber and cut in thin slices. Cut to matoes in wedges, slice radishes and break raw cauliflower into flowerets. Cut celery into pieces and add watercress. Place above ingredients in salad bowl which | has been rubbed with clove of garlic. Vegetables should not be cut too fine. Serves 6 to 8 people. Dressing, (yields one quart) 1 can Campbell’s condensed to mato soup (10 oz.) % cup vinegar Vz cup oil V4 cup sugar 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce. 1 small chopped onion 1 chopped green pepper 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon paprika Combine the above ingredients and mix well. Pour the desired amount on vegetables and toss lightly. Honor Dr. Carver New York Herald Tribune: We honor Dr. Cai’ver not alone for the scientific achievements which fin ally won him world renown. We honor him also as a great humani tarian. Thru a long career as di rector of agricultural research at Tuskegee Institute he permitted no patents to be taken out, no commercialization of discoveries which revolutionized agriculture in the south. He refused profits either for himself or for his race. ^Vhen he died he was receiving only the salary with which he had started at Tuskegee. He was a great American. We do well to honor him.
