*v> . I Catholic Interracial Awards Go To Negro, White Laymen NEW YORK— (ANP)— Win ners of the James J. Hoey awards for interracial justice for 1946 are Charles L. Rawlings, president of the Catholic Inter-racial council of Detroit and Richard Reid, white editor of Catholic News, New York, it was announced here last Friday by the Catholic Inter racial council. The Hoey awards, established in 1942 by the family of the late James J. Hoey, co-founder and first president of CIC, consist of two silver medals conferred each year at the Feast of Christ the l_ King upon a white and Negro w laymen who in the judgment of the committee, made the most outstanding contribution to the cause of interracial justice dur ing the year. Rawlings is one of the organ izers and charter members of the Detroit council, while Reid is the former president of the Catholic Press association and, for a num ber of years, editor of the Bulle tin, published by the Catholic Laymen’s League of Georgia. Award presentation will be made at Carroll club, New York, Sunday, October 27. Speakers scheduled to address the present ation meet include the Rev. John % LaFargo, S. J., editor of America and chaplain of the council; and Charles A. Brigmingham, presi dent. The interracial award has pre viously been given to Frank A. Hall, director of NCWC News service; Edward LaSalle, Kansas City; Philip Murray, president, CIO; Ralph H. Metcalfe and John Yancey, Chicago; the late Mrs. Edward Morrell of Philadelphia; Richmond Barthe, destinguished Negro sculptor, and Paul D Will iams, president of the Southern Regional council. -o Negro In Oak Ridge Town Council OAK RIDGE—(ANP)—A Ne gro was elected here on October 5 to the town council to represent the Negro section known as Scar borough district. Payment of the poll tax for voting was not re quired but only 2,175 persons turned out to the polls. Three of the members of the council were up for re-election. Robert H. Wadkins, the newly elected Negro member, will serve with 11 whites who were elected on the same day. They will take office on October 14, and there after elect one from their num ber to serve as chairman or mayor. Oak Ridge came into promin ence as the site of large scale atomic energy survey. Because of the large scale operations there within recent years on atomic re search the town has grown im mensely and is taking on added significance. Nolen Davis, another of our football heros played right-half back on the Lincoln High team Friday evening October 11. They scored over North East High “22-0”. Nolen is the first negro to play on the team for some time. He is a 10B, he entered L.H.S. from Whittier where he was a star player on the football team. "We are all glad to see him make the grade." Kids seen at the Lincoln High & North East Football game were: Hazel Wilson, Albert Bowen, Betty Wilson, Richard Holcomb, Delores Bowen, Billie Mosby, Freddie Powell, Robbie Powell, Dorothy Greene, Lois Hatcher, Susie Mae Whitehall, Bobbie Graham, Sonnie Walker & many more. Cutest couple of the week— Loretta McWilliams and Billie Ruthford. Iona Adams and Winifred “Peaches” Winston are on the staff of the Whittier Jr. High School paper, The Greenleaf.
