These facts, true and glaring as they are, bring us to a fearful crisis. IU cause of sach aado tusau aod acquired r Is be justly feared, The power and capacity to injure, combined with vicious tendency, in , either human or superhuman, has ever I been a terror to men; and history proves the tjrant ruler the king of all earthly as terrors, and Ua Droves tvrannv th cause of all anarchy. True, the capitalist fulfills useful pur. pose; carries on gigantic projects, that have built up the nation; or rather by means of which the sons of toll have been enabled to build it up. Capital directs, but toll does the work; goes through the sweat, the heat, the grit ! and the grind, and bear, the bu. den u mecuanical construction and opera . Hon. Our dally wants are supplied from the thousands of Industrial plants and factories, held b capitalist; yet the establishments are run, kept order, and products turned out by toll ers. In some instances the no i owner seldom enters into the plant operated by manager, clerks, foreman and work men, all hard laborers, and toilers for meager pay uut mat tne capitalist does some good, does not decide our qnt tion. We are looking to see wbloa of the to does most barm, and is, hence most to be leared. Aod I do, verily consider our present consolidation of wealth into one centralized money powei , to be the grand climax of human terrors, and the birch of a huge ogre to devour civilization, If permitted to sur vtve. Monarchs, the petty tyrants of the past, have largely disappeared, but frwm their ashes has sprung this hydra deaded monster of tyranny, more terri ble than all. The anarchist we are considering Is like an external imminent wasp, or fire bug, that may alarm or attack suddenly at any time. He Is a sporadic Like an u'rolltu he comes and goes unexpect edly, with a coruscation and a flash, and disappears as suddenly as he came to vie. He may have a short, desper ate, despicable and notorious career. but there is no more po er in him for organized capacity, than for organized murder to become established as a vital institution in society. The capita 1st, however, now estab- ished and entrenched deeply in the yltals of society, has become so arro gant, dominant, and tyrannical, that human rights, human liberty, prosper ty, comfort and happiness are in im mlnent danger, throughout the civilized world; and all civilized nations, alike have serious reason to fear him, for he wants the whole earth. Surely the money power at the topi n.full power and control of everything, is to oe justly learea, not only more than the anarchist at the bottom but more than all the bottom classes of so ciety put together. It is all fear at the bottom; all tyranny at the top. Most serious danger comes always from above rather than from below. Not the man that can hurl danger at me from below, but the man ahove that, intentionally or otherwise, may cause something to fall upon me, have I most reason to watch and fear. Not convulsions of the earth below, but of the heaven above, concern me most. Not the power of hell and Satan, but the powers divine, wheuoe come all good and all lif", con cern me most for weal and for woe. Humanity ever struggles end strives for more and better life. Oa earth we are now imploring, and beseeching the capitalists, but in vain. Corporations having no souls, the money power is ony-hearted,i&nd God help the people! Yours, Index Headache bM? Peru, Neb., July 30, 1894 Editor Wealth Makers: I like that idea of an ''Old Soldier's Column." As a number of that element I have a few thoughts to give, apropos of the times. This government is i't going to the dogs just yet too many patriots still living. Our form of gov ernment is all right. Our methods only are wrong. The railroad men and wage earners generally were not rebell ing against our form of government in the late strlck. They were simply re belling against that most monstrous of all engines of oppression organized wealth. We all sympathize with the motive, but condemn the method when violence Is resorted to. Anarchy and liberty are incompatible. The laboring men's cause is just, but tbey must resort to the ballot. They haven't tried that plan yet. The ad ministration did right In suppiesslng violence, but is stupidly criminal iu tailing to make an effort to remove the cause. I he wage-earners and producers of this country are its strength and shield wueu loyal in heart to the powers that be, and Its weakness when other wIm) They may be kept In subjeotlon for a time by the bayonet, but unless an honest effort Is made to remove the cause of dlstontent we will be breeding the germs of anarchy to a dangerous degree. All wise rulers have sought to keep the toilers prosperous and con touted. Liberty is not dependent on wealth, but loyal hearts. You can't tboot loyalty into a man; you muse con vince him that the government will give him a fair show, The corn crop of Nebraska is ruined or the want of raoMure, i'tenty of water ia the Missouri river.. It wouldn't save the corn to double the quantity of wattr wheie it is. The wage-earners of the nation are in distress for the want of money in exchange for their muscle. Plenty of money In Wall street, Multiply the amount tenfold and it wouldn't help matters. But If the gov ernmeat wou.a aiiow tne toilers to go Into the mountains and dig for It there would be great relief. Also if the gov ernment whiob alone has the power to create money, would Issue a judicious amount at once and say to idle labor, come, worn ye in my vineyara lor a season, while the hard times prevail, and whatsoever is right that will I give thee, then the hearts of the tollers would rejoice, and the machinery of commerce and Industry be once more set in motion, and the nation be at rest How belt, the representatives of the people seem to bs both blind and deaf to the cries of distress which now pre' vail. What then shall be done? Cast them out by the power of the ballot and mploy in their stead stewards who are just. As I said before, this nation Is not destined to go to ruin immediately. Nevertheless, I cannot look forward to the coming winter without almost ti enabling in apprehension. The dis tress among the unemployed last win ter would have been terrible but for charity. The numbers of this class are being augmented continually, It will be criminal folly for tne govern ment to heap all this burden upon the sboulderi of charitably inclined people, who, as a rule, are not of the wealthy class. Besides, it would ba unjust. Organ ized sooiety must keep these men from starving otherwise anarchy will be tte result. Strong able bodied men are cot going to lie down and die in the midst of plenty. How much better, then, for government to furnish temporary em ployment to these unfor unate workers, than to spend the same or greater sums in keeping them in subjection by force! The one policy breeds anarchy, the other patriots. Which shall It be? W. D. ABBOTT.
