AVOCA NEWS
Mr. and Mrs. William August of
near Nehawka were guests last Sun
day at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Elmer Corbin.
Senator Fred L. Carsten and wife
spent several days last week visiting
friends in Plattsmouth and attend
ing the King Korn Karnival.
Earl Freeman, wife and little son
were at Weeping Water last Sunday,
where they visited at the home ' of
Earl's parents. Mr. and Mrs. Edward
Freeman.
Miss Dorothy Gollner, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Gollner, who
is employed is Lincoln, enjoyed a
visit over the week end with .her
parents here.
The Senior class of the Avoca high
school and their sponsor, Miss Ber
tha TeSelle enjoyed a picnic supper
at the park in Nebraska City last
Monday evening.
Fred McGrady, who has been so
seriously ill for a long time, is now
showing very good improvement and
was able to again take charge of
his blacksmith shop last week.
William Maseman and wife and
Henry Maseman and wife were in
Elmwood last Sunday evening, go
ing over to visit with Edward Pen
terman, who has been ill for several
weeks.
Fred and Ernest Gollner were in
Kansas City last week for a number
of days, where they were working
with the Jimmie Joy orchestra, which
was playing at one of the show
houses.
Mrs. Robert McDonald and hei
mother, Mrs. Marius Nelson of this
place, together with Mrs. O. E. Mc
Donald of Manley were in Platts
mouth Thursday attending the King
Korn Karnival.
Messrs and Mesdames Elmer Cor-
bin and Edwin Terrell were over to
the Peters farm last Monday, where
they went to purchase some hard
wood lumber which Mr. Corbin de
sired to use in the making of cab
inets. Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Terrell, whe
were at Union caring for the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Schafer
while they were away on a vacation,
with the return of Mr. and Mrs.
Schafer, have returned to their own
home here.
Miss Ruth Wessell and Miss Cor
rine Hallstrom were in Plattsmouth
the latter portion of the week, where
Miss Ruth was attending the Korn
Karnival and Miss Corrine was as
sisting in the drug store of her uncle,
James Mauzy.
Marion Pittman and family were
at Nehawka last Saturday night for
their customary week-end visit with

Charles Rose of near Weeping
Water was looking after business
matters in Avoca Tuesday afternoon.
Edward Freeman of Weeping Wat
er, father of Earl Freeman of Avoca,
has not been in the best of health
for some time and last week a call
came for Dr. J. (W. Brendel to make
a trip to Weeping Water to see him,
as he was very ill.
As Ray Parks, a traveling man
from Lincoln, was attempting to
cross highway No. 50 a mile west of
Avoca last Monday morning, his car
was crashed into by a cream truck.
He suffered several broken ribs and
severe bruises, but word from Bryan
Memorial hospital in Lincoln, where
he was taken, is to the effect that he
is improving nicely. His car was
badly damaged by the impact.
Twentieth Wedding Anniversary
Elmer Wessell and Miss Pearl
Nutzman were united in marriage
twenty years ago Saturday, on Sep
tember 16, 1919, and on Sunday,
September 17, they celebrated the
passing of their twentieth wedding
anniversary, with the assistance of
some eighty of their friends. A most
enjoyable time was had by all.
Visited in the West
Miss Bertha TeSelle, one of
teachers in the Avoca schools,
the

a guest at Kearney over the week
end and was accompanied by Miss
Anna Marie Sailing who visited over
the week end at the home of Prof,
and Mrs. L. L. Larson at Ravenna,
where the Larsons are making their
home and where Mr. Larson is su
perintendent of the Ravesna schools.
Harried at North Branch
Last Wednesday at the North
Branch church there was solemnized
the marriage of Miss Leila Bose and
Harry Hunteman. In the evening a
reception, followed by a dance, was
held for the newlyweds at the Syra
cuse pavilion, with a large number
in attendance.

DISMISS TWISS CASE
LINCOLN, Sept. 22 (UP) The su
preme court today dismissed the ap
peal of Marjorie Twiss, former oper
ator for the Lincoln Telephone &
Telegraph company at Louisville, for
a pension after her discharge. The
Cass county district court had
awarded her $1,272.
The court said Miss Twiss had not
qualified for a pension and had no
rights in a pension fund to which
her employer was the sole contri
butor. The court also refused and
remanded a $5,000 judgment for
slander on grounds that communi
cation of a charge to the plaintiff
alone was not "publication." ;
UPHOLD LIQUOR COMMISSION
LINCOLN, Sept. 22 (UP) The
Nebraska supreme court today up
held the power of the liquor commis
sion to prohibit sale of beer in quart
bottles.
Marsh & Marsh, Inc., a beer dis
tributing company, contended the
commission's regulations for contain
ers were "capricious and discrimin
ative" and challenged the constitu
tionality of the agency's power to
fix such regulations.
ADVANCE IN CANADIAN DISCOUNT
The banks in this territory are
advised fhat there has been a large
advance in the discount on Canadian
currency and checks, advancing as
much as fifteen per cent. There is a
great deal of Canadian currency re
ceived in this section and the cus
tomers of banks are urged to note
the discount rate that will apply to
the Canadian currency and checks.
JUDGING TEAM TO IOWA
LINCOLN, Sept. 22 (UP) A
seven-man livestock judging team
representing the University of Ne
braska college of Agriculture en
tertained today for Waterloo, Iowa
to compete in the inter-collegiate live
stock judging in conjunction with the
National Belgian Horse Show.
Members of the team include:
Wayne Smiley, Milford; and Lyle
Roberts, Tecumseh.

rived this morning over the Burling
ton and will enjoy a visit here as a
house guest of Mrs. R. A. Bates, a
friend of many years standing. Mrs.
Oakes was a former resident of Silver
City, Iowa, where her husband. W. B.
Oakes, was engaged in the banking
business for many years, 'they living
there at the time the late R. A. Bates
operated the Silver City Times.
HERE FROM WEST COAST
Mr. and Mrs. R. F. P. Courtrlght,
of Seattle, Washington, were here
Thursday and remained as overnight
guests of Robert M. Walling. They
are en route to the New York world's
fair.

band and wife, on the North half of
the Northeast quarter of Section 21;
and the West half of the Northwest
quarter of Section 22, all in Town
