Otto Reickman of near Alvo was looking after business matters in Murdock last Wednesday. Paul Stock was called to Weeping Water "last Monday, where he trans acted business matters. J. Johansen and W. E. Lyons were in Lincoln last Tuesday, where they looked after business matters. Herman Stoltz of Prairie Home was looking after business matters at Murdock Wednesday afternoon of last week. Paul Stock was a visitor in Mil ford for a few days the past week, where he attended the annual As sembly of the Evangelical church. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kupke vis ited several days last week and over the week end at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Martin Bohlson and family. Walter Kupke. S. Schlaphof. Jess Stokes and Alfred Rikli went to Mil ford last Tuesday and remained the balance of the week attending the Btate assembly of the Evangelical church. Vernon Rikli. who came home for a short week-end vacation, was call ed back to work to help take care of some special demonstrations being put on by the company for which he works. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Heineman were at Milford last Sunday, attend ing the Assembly of the Evangelical church. While there, they were guests at the home of Rev. and Mrs. II R. Knospe. Mrs. Russell Goerthey and Mrs. Orville Cordez went to Milford last Tuesday to spend a number of days at the Assembly of the Evangelical church that was being held at Riv erside park near that place. Sherman Wolfe and wife of Lin coln were in Murdock over the week end, teing guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Craig. While here, Mrs. Wolfe had some beauty work done by Miss GeraldineCraig. Eastern Star members residing in this vicinity and holding membership at Elmwood enjoyed meeting last Wednesday at the home of their fel low member, Mrs. Rudolph Kuehn. A social hour followed the business session. j Rev. and Mrs. Harvey A: Schwab and the children were at Milfofd, where they attended the Evangelic! church Assembly during the past week. Rev. and Mrs. F. C. Weber, of the Callahan church also attend ed the Assembly. Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Robson, of Lin coln, the latter a daughter of Mr. Galloway, wrote the father a card from Mott, North Dakota, saying they were on their way to the west coast and would continue on from that point the following morning. Frank Rosenow and son Willard went to Plattsmouth a, week ago to s;e the man and his wife who stop ped there over night while en route down the Missouri river in a boat. They had heard Foster May, radio newscaster tell about the expected arrival and drove over to join the throng present at the Tlattsmouth dock to greet the couple. L. Neitzel was a visitor in Weep ing Water last Sunday, where he was assisting with the state assembly of the Mennonite church. They have a fine camp site and in the years to come expeet to add many improvements. Will Spend Month in West Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Tool departed last week for the west, expecting to be gone a month. They went to Colo rado Springs, where they are being joined by their son, Douglas Tool, who will continue with the parents on the remainder of the trip. Among the places of interest they expect to visit is the San Francisco fair. They will also travel up the Pacific coast into the states of Oregon and Wash ington before they return. While they are away, Miss Viola Everett will look after business at the store. Tnjoyable Birthday Dinner Mrs. Fred Stock was hostess last Tuesday at her home in Murdock at a birthday dinner given in honor of her son. Robert Stock. Those present besides Robert were Mrs. Stokes and the children and Mr. and Mrs. Her man R. Schmidt and their grand daughter. Miss Geraldine Schmidt. A most delightful time was had. Taught Bible Class at Plattsmouth L. Neitzel went to Plattsmouth last Sunday, where he substituted for the Journal field man as teacher of a Bible school class at the Christian church, as this writer was called to Des Moines for the day. Mr. Neitzel's long experience as a minister and teacher and editor of Bible school lesson study appearing in the Jour nal each week makes his services as a substitute teacher much in demand throughout this territory and we appreciate the services he rendered in our stead. Fickwell Family Reunion The Pickwell iamily, nuir.'oering a large group of sons and daughters, who, in the years that have come and gone, have left here to locate in other parts of the country (with the single exception of one daughter, Mrs. Win. Tesle) enjoyed a family reunion at at the old home farm west of town yesterday (Sunday, August 20). Those present included Mrs. Emma Davis, who lives in southern Missouri, John Paul Pickwell and Glen Pickwell, of Columbus, Ohio; Gayle Tick well, of California; Mr. and Mrs. George Shackley, of Avoca, and ' the William Tesle family of furdock. There were. several others who could not get here to enjoy the occasion. With the passing of the parents, the occasions of getting to gether have not been as frequent as frequent as in the years when they arrived, and it is needless, to say all are enjoying the opportunity to come back at this time and meet the old friends in this vicinity, where they grew to manhood and woman hood. New Eoof on School Building The Board of Education of the Murdock schools are having a new roof placed on the school house. The building was erected some fifteen years ago, but recently the roof be gan leaking and to correct this de fect a new roof is being placed on the building. A roofing company of Lincoln h?.s the contract for the new roof. 4-H Club Activity The eighth meeting of our 4-H club was held August 9 with Lillie KJemme. This was our last meeting and seven members and seven visi tors were present. We practiced judg- Jing at this meeting to find out the best points in the articles we made this summer. At the close of the meeting refreshments were served. We held our Achievement Day Thursday evening, August 17, at the Murdock school house. One member was absent. This completes our meetings for this year and we have enjoyed meeting and working to gether. News Reporter. SEE yaw FDR SA (f3r m m Elmwood News Mrs. Rhea Jewell, of Lincoln, was calling on friends here a couple of days during the past week. Mesdames Charles West, L. L. Cay gill and George Coatman were visit ing friends and shopping in Lincoln last Tuesday. George Urban, of Huron, South Dakota, was a guest at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Brunkow sev eral days during the past week. Business called Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Greene to Lincoln last Tuesday. Dur ing their absence, business at the drug store was looked after by Mr. and Mrs. Harry Greene. Don Kelley was out in his car on an advertising trip to put up bills for the Jubilee celebration here. He covered many towns and saw to it that the event was well publicized. Fred Wilkins, Harry Allen and Clarence Ohms have been assisting with the work of painting the Platte river bridge at Louisville,' but were compelled" to lay off Tuesday after noon on account of the rain. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Greene were in Murdock and Alvo one day last week, calling on friends and distrib uting literature advertising the Jubi lee celebration to be held ehere this week, August 23, 24 and 25. George Hall was assisting Ronald Schlichtemeier in the making of some repairs and changes in the water system at the home of Mr. Schlichte meier and correcting a leak which had developed in the piping. Waldo Willett, who has been in the state of Washington looking for a place to locate, writes Albert Alford that he likes the country very well and has hopes of finding a suitable location. The card was written from Centralia. Mr. James and family are arrang ing to move to town soon and the farm on which they have lived will be occupied by someone else. The move will enable Mr. James to look after his business interests in town better than having to go back and forth between town and the farm. Mrs. Bothwell, Sr., who has been residing at the home of a son, Mar ion Bothwell, at Gothenburg, is hav ing her goods brought to Lincoln by "Shorty" West on his return from taking the goods of Mrs. William Hunter to Hay Springs. She will store the goods in Lincoln and come to Elmwood to make her home with her son, Norville Bothwell and' fam ily, for the present. George Eidermiller ' and ' family took a trip in their car last Sunday that carried them into Iowa and Missouri, also to Falls City and other towns in the southeastern part of our own state. Mr. Eidermiller was greatly impressed with the fine corn crop in northwestern Missouri, where he says there will be no lack of corn for feed and commercial pur poses this year. He also observed considerable old corn in the cribs down that way. Tell of White Crows The boys at the station on lower Main street tell of seeing three white crows and one gray one in the woods southeast of town. They are quite a curiosity and are attracting much attention among the people in that vicinity. Home from the West Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Penterman, who have been visiting relatives in the west and attending the fair at Los Angeles (which Maurice says is sure a big exposition) arrived in Lincoln early last Sunday morning and were met there by Herman Pen terman, father of Maurice, who brought them to Elmwood. Improvements at Service Station . The Standard Oil station on lower Main street, which was recently pur chased by Sidney James and has been conducted by his son, Robert James and Kenneth West, has been undergoing some Improvements. Putting Stand in Condition Boyd Clements, son of Arley Clem ents, who operates a confectionery and stationery stand in the little building opposite the bank and post office, was painting and decorating the building last week, getting it in condition for the Jubilee celebration to, be held the latter part of this week, , and looking forward to doing a good business. Visiting Daughter in West Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell Smalley were in Omaha last Sunday night, taking Mrs. Veronea Olsen up to catch a train for the west, as she was leaving for Los Angeles, where she will visit her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Miller, who have been living out there for some time. She will he gone a month or more. . i . . . Moved to Hay Springs Mrs. William Hunter, who has been making her home here, moved last week to Hay Springs to make her home. Her goods were taken by truck by "Shorty" West, while Mrs. Hunter had some one drive her auto and she went with the car. She has resided here a long .time and will be missed by a large circle of friends. Having property there, she decided it would be best to go and reside in it. No Services Last Week On account of the vacation of Rev. Hawkins, pastor of the Christian church, which took himself and wife to the western part of the state for a visit, there was no evening service at the church last Sunday, August 13. They were back, in time for the services yesterday, however. ladies Enjoyed Meeting The members of the Ladies Aid of the Methodist church held their meeting at the church parlors Tues day of last week. The business ses sion was followed by a social hour, climaxed with a luncheon. Enjoyed Visit , in Lincoln Stanley Wood and wife of Weep ing Water came through Elmwood Sunday morning and picked up the parents of Mr. Wood, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Wood, all, oing to Lincoln, where they spent' the day at the home of Mrs. Laura Melvin and daughter. Miss Jessie. Mrs. Melvin and Mr. Wood are cousins and it had been quite some tjme since they had the opportunity of visiting together. Needless to say, they enjoyed the occasion very much. Mrs. Melvin is 83 years old and is enjoying very good health. , All Set for Big Celebration Everything is in, readiness for the biggest and best celebration Elm wood has ever had in the 51 years of its history. Last year it was be lieved the pinacle Was reached with the Golden Jubilee celebration, but when one sees the vast groundwork that has been laid to make this year's second edition of the Golden Jubilee top everything, he cannot help but agree with the foregoing statement. Nothing short of a rain-out can halt the grand time that is in store for the people these three days Wed nesday, Thursday and Friday (Aug ust 23-24-25). Some of the attractions will be a ball game each day, three bands the Louisville Farmers Union, the Elmwood band and the Juvenile band, an exciting Model T Ford trick race, a minstrel show each afternoon, moving pictures each day and even ing, a 4-H club style show, and var ious other features for the enjoy ment of the public. "Come Early and Stay Late," is the slogan of the committee. MANLEY NEWS Arnold Schliefert and Paul Mann made a trip to Omaha last Saturday to secure some repair parts. Junior Harman of Omaha has been visiting at the home of his grand mother here for the past week. Frank Rhoden of Murray was a guest at the home of his brother, G. C. Rhoden for a short time dur ing the past week. Mrs. Matthew Reams of Lincoln spent a few days here last week as a guest at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Schliefert. Mother of Mrs. Glen Vallery of This City Dies After Failing Health of Some Four Years. Elizabeth Elvira Carroll was born July 18, 18 60 in Marysville, Mis souri, where Bhe resided until at the age of three . years she moved with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. M.- Carroll and settled on a farm near Nehawka, Nebraska. On July 23, 1878 she was mar ried to Edward Mayo Shepherdson of Factoryville, Nebraska, making their home for many years in Weep Ing Water, Nebraska. To this union twelve children were born, six of them with her husband having pre ceded her in death. Mr. Shepherd- son passed away at Weeping Water Nebraska, July 16, 1913. Mrs.. Shepherdson was later united in marriage to John J. Thurman of Auburn, Nebraska, who passed away seven years later. Since 1920 Mrs. Thurman has made her home with her daughters When a small child she was united with the Methodist church of Mt. Pleasant, Nebraska (near Nehawka) where she was a faithful member, also a member of the choir for many years. After moving to Weeping Water she united with the First Methodist church of which she is still a mem ber. Mrs. Thurman has been a loving mother and faithful home maker. She always lived the principles of her church. She has been in failing health for the last four years. She passed away Thursday after noon at 3 o'clock at Oconto, Ne braska where she has been gravely ill for several days. She leaves to mourn her loss four .inmrhtprR. Mrs. V. D. Parrlsh of Lincoln. McDonald vis ited in Plattsmouth over Saturday night at the home of their daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ault. They returned home Sunday evening. Miss Bessie Bailey, who spent a couple of weeks here as a guest at the home of her uncle and aunt, Mr and Mrs. Fred Flaischman. was taken back to her home in Platts mouth last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. John Rohrdanx had a3 guests at their country home last Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Ploetz of Lincoln, Paul Kupke and family of near Murdock, George Young and family and Herbert Roelofsz. . Rohhie McDonald and family of Avoca visited here Thursday, Bobby looking after business at the tavern conducted by his father, while the latter and a number of others went to Sidney to attend the rodeo. Joseph and Ernest Gruber and Ralph Wildy, who play with the Weeping Water baseball team, ac companied that organization to Ben nett for a game Wednesday after noon. We did not learn the result. Mr. and Mrs. Rudolf Bergman and young son started out for Omaha, where they expected to attend a show at which $90 in salary was to ba awarded. When they arrived in Louisville, Mrs. Bergman concluded she would visit her brother instead, and over the protestations of her husband they remained there. Rau left last Sunday on a vacation trip of two weeks duration. During their absence, Mr. L. A. Tull of Lincoln is here looking after business affairs at the bank. Still in Serions Condition Mr. and Mrs. Herman Rauth were In Lincoln Wednesday of last week, where they called on H. C. Christen sen, a brother of Mrs. Rauth, who was so seriously injured in an auto collision a fortnight ago. They found him slightly improved, but still in a serious condition and expect it to be a long time before he is well again.
