"Paul Pleads His Own Case"
(Acts 21:40 22:4; Acts 22:30
23:11; Acts 24:10-27; Acts 25: 1-27;
Acts 26:1-32.)
No prisoner in all history, has
pleaded his own case before such im
minent assemblies, dignitaries and
potentates, without having a verdict
rendered against him and not set
free. But as we study the five trials
in this lesson, we behold the guiding
hand and sustaining power of God,
and the carrying out of the purposes
of God. (Acts 9:15).
We will briefly recount the five
trials and their results.
1 Trial before the mob in the
temple at Jerusalem, (Acts 21:40
22:4). Arrested as he was in the
temple performing the rite of the
Nazarite for others, by the accu
sation of Jews of Asia Minor, and
false charges, hatred against Jesus
and His way, being the motive; (and
this is the cause of the , Jews being
outside of Christ's Kingdom to this
day) ; I'aul testifies that he once
held the same attitude, that they
showed toward Christ, but something
happened in his life that changed
his attitude, and receiving a commis
sion from God, to tell the world the
good news, of the Messiah, whom God
had promised his people, and that he
should carry this message even to
the Gentiles. That was' the signal
for the mob to take a hand in the
matter. There is no reason ia a
mob. I'aul is bound with thonirs
the last free day for year's.
2 Trial before the Sanhedrin, the
next day at Jerusalem, (Acts 22:30,
23:11) the mob is here excluded, it
is the dignified body of the rulers of
the Jews. If ever I'aul could be
grateful for having lived a sincere
and open life, it" must have been on
the occasion of his trials. (So should
eery Christian live that when false
charges are brought against him, he
has nothing to fear). I'aul knowing
the division between Sadducees and
Pharinsees, he took advantage of
thi3 fact and set the two factions
to fight each other. That night Paul
had a visitor v.ll, encouraging his
servant.
3 Trial before Felix at Caesarea
(Act. 24:10-27. With a military es
cort I'aul left Jerusalem to Caesarea.
Four hundred seventy-six soldiers
was quite a bodyguard. After five
days the high priest and elders and a
certain orator Tertullus appeared
before the governor Felix, and
brought charges against Paul, vv. 5,
6. Again Paul defends his activities
by disproving the charges and de
fending the gospel he had preached,
two weeks and kept him in bed a
greater part of the time, and was just
getting well enough to get out
the wife was kept to her bed for
week. She is reported as being slight
ly improved during the past few
days.
Visited Parents Here.
Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Weishart of
Kansas City were here for a visit
with his parents, John Weishart and
wife and to visit the cemetery and
as well spent the time vistiug many
friends in and about Weeping Wa
ter. They remained for only one day
as Donald is very busy now at me
department store where he is man
ager.
Home From the West.
Mrs. Ralph Ketkler was over to
Wahoo visiting at the borne 01 a
friend. O. E. Anderson baa some
3ars to be taken to Los Angeles and
those taking them offered a trip out
for $7 and Mrs. Keckler and her
friends went, first coming home for
suitable clothes. After a little more
than a week there where she visited
with her grand children who were
injured in an auto wreck some time
ao, she returned to attend the Mem
orial services, arriving home last
Sunday evening.
Memorial Day Exercises.
Memorial day was duly celebrated
and a most enjoyable program given.
The graves of the soldier dead were
decorated. Attorney C. E. Tefft vas
the principal speaker and made an
.excellent address of a patriotic nature
and looking to the welfare of the en
tire country, which was shown by the
speaker to be tho very best country
on earth.
The parade to the cemetery was
led by the color guard, followed by
the American Legion band and the
Legion members themselves. At the
cemetery, where the graves had been
marked they fired a salute over the
soldier dead. The invocation was
pronouncd by Rev. J. K. Meyers,
followed by "America," sung by the
gathering. Peggy Amick gave a very

regarding the hope toward God and
the resurrection of the dead (v. 15).
Felix convinced of Paul's innocence,
allowed him a good deal of freedom,
and showed quite an interest in
Paul's preaching; one day he and
his wife Drusilla heard Paul preach.
So effective - did Paul present the
truth, that Felix trembling, stopped
Paul and told him some "convenient"
day he would hear him again. No
verdict was rendered at this trial.
Paul is left a prisoner by Felix to
his successor Festus, not having suc
reded to get a bribe from I'aul.
We come now to the fourth trial,
before Festus (Acts 25:1-17). When
Festus visited Jerusalem, the high
priest and chief rulers tried to have
Festus bring Paul to Jerusalem for
trial (intending to kill him on the
way). To this Festus did not con
sent, but invited them to come to
Caesaria, for a hearing, which they
did. Paul answered their accusations
with a flat denial of all the chrges.
(v. 8). But Festus trying to favor
the Jews, asked Paul if he would con
sent to go to Jerusalem to be tried,
which must have angered Paul, who
rose up in his dignity and told this
favoring, hypocrite (see verses 10,
11) not expecting justice at the
hands of this man, there was- nothing
else for hint to do than to "appeal to
Caesar." And this was also in the
plan of God. I'aul must carry the
gospel to Rome, the center of the
wor"ld.
This unexpected move brings us
to the fifth trial, before Agrippa.
This is the most distinguished as
sembly of all the trials (See 25:23).
Here I'aul appears at his best. "Of
all the apostle's utterances, it is
the most finished and elaborate in
style, and it reaches the high water
mark of his oratory." Maurice
Jones. (No one should fail to read
chapter 26). The climax was reach
ed when Agrippa, stirred by the elo
qence of Paul exclaimed: "Almost
thou persuaded me to be a Christian."
And what a triumphant shout comes
from Paul: "I would to God, that
not only thou but also all that hear
me thi3 day, were both almost, and
altogether, such as I am." The burn
ing zeal and passion of Paul to save
Agrippa, wonld go to any height
but it ended in tragedy: Almost but
lost! So have thousands been "not
far" from tho Kingdom, but they
did'not enter the open door, and the
"door was shut," never to open again.
The verdict here was: "This man
might have been set atl iberty, if he
had not appealed to Caesar." But
God's plan and purpote was for Paul
to go to Rome, and to Rome he went.
fine rendition of the address of Abra
ham Lincoln which he gave on the
memorable battlield of Gettysburg.
The benediction was pronounced by
Rev. George Hunt of the Congrega
tional church.

Enjoy Trip to Lincoln.
Sunday morning, May 28th, Mr.
and Mrs. .Earl A. Oldham and Mr.
and Mrs. Walter Little motored to
Lincoln, where they enjoyed the day
sightseeing.
They drove to Antelope park, where
they enjoyed the beautiful trees and
plant life, also seeing the animals
and pheasants, then on to the zoo
building where they admired the rare
and beautiful birds, also viewing the
animals and reptiles. Then for a
very enjoyable picnic lunch in such
pleasant surroundings, appreciatin
so much the shade, comfortable seats
and table of the park. After a pleas
ant and leisurely lunch they then
visited KFAD studios where Jiggs
Miller very kindly did the honors of
showing them through the studio,
also introducing them to Earl Wil
liams, another well known KFAB an
nouncer. From there to the great
capitol building in time to join a
party the guide was just starting on
i tour of the building. Such archi
tecture and grandeur was wonderful
to behold.
Then back to the park for another
enjoyable lunch, before returning
home in the late afternoon. Inci
dentally it was Mrs. Oldham's birth
day anniversary and she considered
it a grand celebration, and the others
a very wonderful day.
YOUNG MAN INJURED
Last Thursday while Holland Rikli,
20, of near Murdock was engaged
in ploying with a tractor, the ground
being uneven, it did not work so
well and he detached the tractor
from the plows and was so doing
when the tractor which was on the
uneven ground, turned over, catch
ing the young man underneath. While
his leg was badly lacerated and torn
by the lugs of the machine, .he Im
mediately began with his hands to
dig out of his perilous situation,
meanwhile shouting for help and was
heard by Jess Kliser and Chester,
who is employed by the Kliser broth
ers, who when told by Miss Kliser
who chanced to be in the yard, heard
cries for help and hastened to his
assistance. They dug him out from
under the tractor and hurried him to
a Lincoln hospital after telephoning
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. E.
Rikli. In the dressing of the wound
it was necessary to takes ome 96
stitches in the leg to close the gaping
wound. While the injury was most
serious, the young man is reported
as getting along nicely. The many
friends are hoping for the best in a
complete recovery.
