"Peter Heals a Lame Man'
Acts 3:1-4; 22.
The apostle Peter, who caused our
Lord much grief when he was here
oi-. earth, after receiving the baptism
of the Holy Spirit, is just the oppo
site that he was before; here he is
the exponent of the power of God,
of what God can make out of a man,
if he gives God a chance. This Peter
did. And what God did in Peter he
can and will do in every man who
submits to his will.
We record in this lesson the first
miracle wrought by the apostles, God
fulfilling his promise (See Mark 16:
20). The scene of our lesson follow
ed soon after Pentecost; the apostles
observed the Jewish custom of stated
hours of prayer. Peter and John
the opposites are much together be
fore and after Pentecost. (John 1:
-; Luke 22:S; John 18:16; 20:6
8) ; also in the apostolic church (Acts
8:14; Gal. 2:9).
Peter and John are on the way to
a prayer meeting; they are in a
worshipful mood. God places an op
portunity in their way, a lame man
is carried by friends to the temple
people who go to church are charit
able there he has spent many days
begging, at the "Beautiful Gate"
where the multitudes enter. (This
gate, at the east entrance, which was
75 feet high and 60 feet wide, re
quired the strength of twenty men
to open and close, was of Corinthian
brass, covered with gold and silver
a truly imposing entrance).
The momentous moment has come
for the apostles to show their faith
and the Holy Ghost his power. The
lame man is a well known figure-
after forty years of begging; his
voice also, so there could be no mis
take later about his identity. Hold
ing out his hand for a gift, he re
ceives none. Peter says: "Look on
us." His attention is aroused; he
looks up expecting something from
them! "Silver and gold have I none,
but what I have, that give I thee.
In the name of Jesus Christ of Naza
reth, walk! This command was
obeyed; a grip from Peter by the
right hand, and the man arises,
completely cured, leaping, learning
to walk stood up trying out his
new strength then walking, and
while thus exercising, shouting and
praising God the act of new con
verts in former times.
The physological effect on the mul
titude was tremendous, giving praise
and glory to God, recognizing the
power of God in the act of healing
that was the intended purpose of
God. and the final result was a

church, which had increased by this
time to about 5,000 men, adding
women and children making a total
of about 20,000. The world has
never been able to account by nat
ural causes for the change which
salvation accomplishes in the lives of
men. It is the miracle of every age.
The church today would not have to
engage itself so repeatedly in self
defense, it if could continually offer
to the world lives of changed men,
trophies of God's redeeming grace
and power.
"The whole principle of medical
missions is covered by this action on
the part of the apostles." G. Stock
er. This gathering of the multitude
became Peter's opportunity and he
preached a sermon concerning the re
lationship of Jesus Christ to the
Israelites. (Acts 3:12-26)1 All con
troversy is cut off by Peter as to
how man can be saved from sin and
by whom. As the lame man was
healed by the power of Jesus Christ
of Nazareth, who is a true type of
the helplessness of man in his sin,
and as there was no power or agency
by which this lame man or sinner
can be healed, Peter points out to
his audience, God's simple but effi
cient remedy and it alone is recog
nized by God. and accepted by the
high court of heaven; it is this and
should be printed in our Bibles in
letters of Gold "and in no other
name is there salvation; for neither
is there any other name under
heaven, that is given among men,
whereby me may te saved." (Acts
4:12).
We marvel at the simple, easy way
that God provides for man to be
saved. Believing on the Lord Jesus
i3 not so easy for the sophisticated,
but the childlike trust in God's
promises, and giving ones self Into
God's hands, is all; God will do the
rest, making a new character out
of man; putting a new heart and
spirit in him, so that man walka in
his way, until he will reach home.
This remarkable incident was fol
lowed by the first persecution, and
we notice how P;ter stood as a
"Rock" against his persecutors, hurl
ing in their faces this challenge: "Is
it right in the sight of God to harken
unto you more than to God, Judge
ye." Jesus had assured them that he
would be with theta alway; they
trusted Jesus and came away vic
torious. Many others, heroes in the cause
of Christ, have taken such a bold
stand, and have overawed their per
secutors, so that "they would take
knowledge that they bad been with
Jesus. That is true witnessing for
Jesus.
