Mrs. Dearing, wife of Dr. J. S. Dearing, and daughter, Elizabeth, of Onawa, Iowa, were guests last Sun day at the home of Mr. and Mrs. It. W. Greene. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Greene, who spent a week in the vicinity of Scottsbluff, where Mr. Greene was selling wall paper, arrived home last Sunday evening. Mrs. J. W. Fox of Scotia, Nebr., visited in Elmwood over the week end, being a guest at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Talmorn. James Taylor, aged Elmwood resi dent who has been a patient sufferer from a serious ailment for a long time, was taken to the University hospital in Omaha last week. Henry Monning and wife and Mrs. Emily Gonzales were in Eagle last Sunday, where they visited with the Fred Rudolph family. Mesdames Monning, Gonzales and Rudolph are sisters. Mr. and Mrs. X. D. Bothwell and daughter, Jean Adair, with Grand father Oscar Turner, made a trip to Gothenburg, Nebr., Sunday, -where they visited at the home of Cath erine Bothwell, mother of Mr. Both well. Workmen were busy last Tuesday installing city water at the residence cf Herman Stege. Numerous citizens of the community with wells for the source of their water supply, are be ing forced to install city water due to failure of their wells. The cafe of Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Dennis has been decorated by their son with multi-colored crepe paper, making the room a veritable bower of beauty. Just now, with dreary win ter days ahead, seems a good time to dress up one's place of business. Reporting for State Journal Donald Gonzales, a Journalism student at the University of Ne braska, accepted an assignment from the State Journal to cover a num ber of political addresses, and with his keen sense of the political situa tion and natural aptitude for re porting was able to prepare some very good accounts of the meetings: Home from the West Mrs. O. E. Liston arrived home Saturday night from Evergreen, Colorado, where she 6pent ten days visiting James Liston and other rela tives and friends. Churches Observe Hallowe'en Last Monday night a very pleas ant gathering was held at the base ment of the Methodist church, par ticipated in by members of the three Elmwood church groups, the Evan gelical, Methodist and Disciples of Christ. The party was in the nature of a Hallowe'en get-together and various games characteristic of the time were played. Refreshments were also served, and those present, old as well as young, report a most de lightful time. Meeting of Jobs Daughters A group of members of Jobs Daughters came over from Platts mouth one night last week to at tend the Eastern Star meeting and acquaint the O. E. S. members here as well as a number residing in the vicinity of Murdock who belong to the 'Elmwood chapter. It is planned to organize a Jobs Daughters chapter in Elmwood. Held Enthusiastic Rally A goodly number of the democrats cf Cass county gathered in Elmwood last Saturday night for a political rally. Most of the county candidates were present, together with some outside speakers and enthusiasm ran high for democratic victories at' the polls on election day. Enjoyable Hallowe'en Party Mr. and Mrs. Doanie Stark enter tained a group of friends at their home Monday evening at a Hallo we'en party. Appropriate games were played and refreshments served. Moves Back to Elmwood Dan Coon, who some eleven. years ago moved from here to Lincoln, in which city he has since resided, last week moved back here to live. The home, which has been rented since the time they moved away, required considerable work to get it -in shape to live in, but, with the repairs com pleted, the family is glad to be back home again after the lapse of more than a decade. Lost a Finger Bettie, six-year-old daughter of James Lytle, the road man, suffered loss of the index finger of her right hand last week. She was watching her brother, Dean, split wood, and just as the ax came down, put her hand forward to grasp the stick of wood. The sharp blade of the ax entirely severed the finger. The wound was promptly dressed by the family physician and is getting along very nicely. Asked about her missing finger, Bettie replied, "Oh, it is in a bottle." Alvo News Rev Hammel's hand is getting along very well. Margaret Jean Stroemer was home during vacation last week. She at tends the University of Nebraska. "''Mrs. Frank Taylor is ill this week with the flu. Last week Mr. Taylor was ill, but is feeling much better again. J. B. Elliott. Jr., is holding his annual John Deere day show and en tertainment today (Monday). Last year more than a thousand people at tended this event. The high school students and teachers enjoyed a Hallowe'en party Monday evening at the school house. Games and stunts in keeping with the season were enjoyed. Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Hardnock spent Sunday at Elmwood . at the John Wood home. Mrs. Hardnock found her sister, Mrs. Wood, quite ill. Friends hope to hear a better re port from her soon. Del Tison, a "former Alvo resi dent, who has been living on a farm north of Wann, was in the community" last week trying to find seme good corn huskers. He reported that he had corn that would yield 75 bushels per acre. Convalescing at Hospital Mrs. Dick Elliott is convalescing at the St. Elizabeth hospital since undergoing a major operation Wed nesday. Mrs. Elliott is reported to be feeling as well as possible. Friends wish Mrs. Elliott a speedy recovery. Returns to School Work at Peru Grace Muenchau, who is attend ing the Peru State Teachers college, returned to Peru Sunday after being home since Wednesday afternoon. Ercnght Home the Walnuts ' Mr. and Mrs. Arthui- Singes and Supt. and Mrs. Orville Buehler and baby motored to Liberty Sunday, where they visited Mrs. Buehler's parents and went walnut picking:. They returned home with six bush els of the largest black walnuts that any one could wish for. The couples also called on Supt. Buehler's parents near Crab Orch ard. Coes to Wyoming Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Copple and Lee and Mr. and Mrs. Guy Hines and family of Wabash drove to Berns, Wyoming, where they visit ed a brother of Mrs. Copple and Mr. Ilines, Jesse Hines and family. The two families returned home late Sunday evening. They enjoyed a very pleasant trip. Is Shot in Hand Ralph Roelofsz was unfortunate to the extent of being shot in the hand one day last week. He and Dwight Taylor were hunting pigeons one day during vacation. Ralph in formed Dwight that he was to shoot as he chased out the pigeons. Dwight saw one coming out and shot. After shooting a couple of times he learned that Ralph had a hold of the pigeon and had been shot in the hand. It was necessary to have three shot re moved and as a result Ralph has a very sore hand. Entertains Aid Society Mrs. A. B. Stroemer was hostess to the local Ladies Aid Society Wed nesday afternoon, November 2. A very large crowd was present to en joy the pleasant afternoon'. Mrs. Talbert Edwards, the presi dent, had charge of the business meeting. Mrs. Fairfield's group will serve the lunch for J. B. Elliott, Jr., at the John Deere day festivities' on Monday. Mrs.' W: L.' Copp1e;s group plan to serve the dinner to the Knife and Fork club members and their wives from Lincoln, besides a local group that will attend. This will be held in the very near future. Associate hostesses assisted with the serving of delicious chicken sand wiches and coffee at the close of the meeting. SCOUTS HOLD COURT OF HONOR From . Wednesday's Pally Last evening a court of honor of the Boy Scouts was held at Auburn where a large number of the troops had representatives for advancement and awards of merit badges. Rev. Jackson, of Nebraska City, was the chairman of the court and looked after the handling of the pro gram. The Plattsmouth troop was repre sented by Scoutmaster Raymond J. Larson and E. II. Wescott, veteran Scouter, with Scouts Cary Marshall. Billy Robertson, Lars Larson and Sanford Short. Marshall was award ed a life Scout honor and Robertson, Larson and Short each received merit badges representing their work in Scouting and for their higher rank irf the organization.
