PAGE FOUR PIATTSMOUTH SEMI - WEEKLY JOURNAL MONDAY, AUGUST 29, 1938. Committees for the King 1 Korn Karniva! Roster of Workers Reads Almost Like City Directory Plan a Bigger, Better Show. Numerically, the list of committee members for Plattsmouth's seventh annual King Korn Karnival is much larger than in former years. The "directory" was published to day and copies will be in the hands of each member before the next gen eral meeting to lay some of the final plans for making this year's show bigger and better than any that have preceded it. Looking back to 1932, when a small but dauntless group met at the Legion community building on a sultry hot August night to con sider some sort of a fall festival, it is plainly evident that Plattsmouth has eoir.e a long ways in six years and with the experience of the past successful events should be able to make this seventh annual show out standing in every way. Much might be said about what is responsible for Plattsmouth Korn Karnival success but for brevity sake it can be summed up in a sin gle word and that word "C6 OPERATION." Every man and woman assigned a place on Com mittees accepts the full responsibil ity of his or her job. That is what makes for success in anything and Plattsmouth has the reputation of a more co-operative jrroup of business men and citizens than do many towns of our size. Below is published the complete list of officers and committee mem bers for the 193S Korn Karnival: Officers Gen. Chairman 11. G. Soennichsen Treasurer E. A. Wurl Secretary Leslie W. Robertson, prominent local attorney. The suite as arranged comprises a waiting room, stenographer's office, private office of Mr. Robertson and a fine and spacious room for the fine law library. The waiting room has been re decorated in tones of ivory paper and brown woodwork and as well new and modernistic lighting effects have been used on the walls and ceiling arranged through the room add3 to the appearance of this "part of the office. Through the stenographer's office, private office and library, silitex has been used on thew alls and ceiling in tones of cream and light tan and the lower portion in darker brown to add a very artistic touch. The windows in all of the rooms are equpiped with Venetian blinds that aid in making them much more comfortable in the summer season. Connecting offices makes it one of the most handy suites in the city and the large room used as the li brary gives Mr. Robertson a fine and well arranged study and work room. The offices are as attractive as can be found in city arranged of fices and will be both convenient and comfortable for Mr. Robertson and his efficient stenographer, Mrs. Estella Rutherford. INJURED IN FALL Last night Charles F. Hitt was returned home from Litchfield, Ne braska, where he was severely in jured Monday in an accident. He has been working at the carpenter trade on a bridge building project near Litchfield. Monday he was working from a twenty-foot scaffold when it broke and he fell the distance from the top, tearing the muscles and ligaments of the left shoulder, spraining the left leg and ankle and also sustain ing a gash on the left leg that caused internal bleeding that may later re sult in having to tap the ankle to remove the blood. His left wrist, was also injured. He was cared for at his room at Litchfield until his condition became such that it was thought best that he return home. He was met in Omaha last night by his brother-in-law, Hillard Grassman and his niece, Frances Gamblin and brought on home. Coming of the Burlington Im portant Date Observance Here During King Korn Karnival by Marking of Historical Spots. Those of us who live in Platts mouth today fail to fully appreciate the efforts of the pioneers who cre ated the town. Fontenelle Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution with the assistance of the C. B. & Q. railroad, the city government and the King Korn Karnival committee are plan ning together to mark some of the historical spots in Plattsnioath. A review of some of the early events of the railroad may call forth other anecdotes of interest and it is hoped these will be written and given the committee for preservation. Following is the contract made for the building of the Burlington & Missouri as it was recalled in the beginning. Mrs. E. II. Wescott, his torian Fontenelle chapter D. A. R.: "Contract for building the B & M. River railroad in Nebraska from Plattsmouth in Cass county to a point in Lancaster county sixty miles west of Plattsmouth. This indenture and agreement made between John Fitzgerald of Glenwood and F. H. Mallory of Chariton, Iowa, parties of the first part and the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad company in Nebraska, party of the second part. Witnesseth that the parties of the first part, etc., in consideration of the covenants, promises and agree ments of and in behalf of the party of the second part will and hereby do agree, covenant and promise to with the said party of the second part to furnish all material (.with such exceptions as are hereafter men tioned) necessary for the entire com pletion and to construct and deliver up in good running order and in strict conformity with terms and con ditions of this contract all that por tion of the Burlingtou and Missouri Railroad in Nebraska lying between Plattsmouth in Cass county and a point in Lancaster county sixty miles west of Plattsmouth, both in the state of Nebraska on or before (no date mentioned.)" (Signers) JOHN FITZGERALD. S. H. MALLORY. ' In Johnson's History of Nebraska, 18 SO, on page 242, we read: "Early in July, in the presence of a large crowd of spectators, John Fitzgerald, at the foot of Main street, in Plattsmouth displayed his strength and skill in 'breaking ground for the railroad track." From the Illustrated History of Ne braska, 1903, J. Sterling Morton, we read, page 110: "The Burlington and Missouri River railroad has been located as far west as a point opposite Plattsmouth and surveys have been made from that place west with a view to con nection with the Union Pacific at or not greatly beyond Columbus, Neb. The proposed extension of that line west of the Missouri river is to be in the valley of the Platte river and Lincoln city has never been thought of as a point. Besides we venture the assertion that no intelligent man in Nebraska believes that the Burling ton road will ever be built west of the Missouri river in any direction." In 1925 the Burlington was serving the people in eleven states, 11,000 miles in all, actual investment $562, 000,000. These figures are accord ing to the story of the Burlington vice president, W. W. Baldwin of the road in 1925. TAKEN TO HOSPITAL From Friday's Dally Dr. R. P. Westover this morning took Charles F. Hitt to Omaha, where he will be placed in the Lutheran hospital for treatment and obser vation. Mr. Hitt was injured the first part of the week in an accident at Litchfield, Nebraska, and was brought home Wednesday night. UNDERGOES OPERATION Mrs. Joseph Stodola who was oper ated on a few days ago at the St. Catherine's hospital at Omaha, is reported as doing as well as possible under the circumstances. Mrs. Sto dola has not been in good health for some time and it is hoped that the operation may restore her to her former good health.
