"Hannah: Godly Motherhood"
T Ram 1-9.1S-
This is a powerful lesson on-'the
preeminent value of a Godly home,
and perfect environment for the rear
ing of strong men and women as
leaders in the present age. There
never was an age where the need of
courageous and true men was so
much needed as today; and they can
only come from homes such as Han
nah provided.
The father of Samuel was Elcana,
l is mother's name was Hannah, who
was childless; so Elcana married a
second wife whose name was Pen
inuah. who had children. No greater
sorrow could come to any Hebrew
wife than to be childless; it was
looked upon as a disfavor of God.
We think of Sarah, Rachel, Eliza
beth. Hazelelponi, the mother of
Samson.
In all the great crises of history,
God provided the man of the hour.
Ii the history of Israel the time was
approaching for the grrat change,
to pass from a theocracy to a mon
archy; the reign or rule of the
judges was not satisfactory; it did
not produce a homogeneous struc
ture every man did that which was
right in his own eyes.
It was at this time that God was
looking for a mother to produce the
man he needed. Here we take up the
lesson, and find the character of
Hannah, which was (1) a stron
faith in God manifest in constant
prayer to Jehovah; (2) she was a
woman of infinite patience and ten
derness never was a bitter or hasty
word heard from her during the days
of her great trial and persecution
on the part of Peninuah; Hannah
thought it a great honor to be the
mother of a son. The father, a man
oT wealth, lived at Ramah, who
would go once a year (he should
have gone three times) to Shiloh,
where the ark of the covenant was
in a tent. On one of those occasions
we fiud the whole family at the
tabernacle; when all rejoiced, Han
nah, in her sorrow, went to have a
talk with God. She poured her heart
out before him and made very defi
nite promises or vows to God: (a) If
lie will give her a son, (b) she will
give him to God's service all of his
life, (c) the son shall be a Nazarite
(read Numbers 6). No words are
uttered in her prayer, inaudible, only
her lipe moved The indolent priest
Eli observed this and believing the
woman drunk, tells her to go home
and get sobered up; that was a bit
ter and hard word from her spirit-'
daughter and family, Charles Land
and family. -
The sewer being constructed near
the Frans lumber yard is showing
good progress. It will when com
pleted greatly improve the roadway
at that point.
The ladies aid of the Methodist
church were meeting with Mrs. Art
Pearsley last Friday with Mrs. A. W.
Carr co-hostess. A very enjoyable
and profitable meeting was had.
Mrs. Molly Garrens and grandsons,
Billy and Jack, departed last Satur
day evening for Kansas City where
they will make a short visit, but
returning to Union for the opening of
school.
At the home of Otto Ehlers, the
well which was sunk deeper recent
ly now has some 70 feet of water
in it and with the new pump which
has been installed there is now
plenty of water for all purposes.
Chas. W. Hoback, wife, and fam
ily, Marporie, Donald and Ivan to
gether with W. A. Taylor and wife
wer seeing the country last Sunday
and while driving stopped at the air
races at Syracuse during the after
noon. A covered dish luncheon was given
at the Baptist church Thursday noon
for the benefit of the missionary as
sociation. A good crowd was pres
ent and many remained for the Moth
er Goose play which was presented
at 2:30.
Letters from Hulett, Montana, tell
of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Borne having
arrived and settled in business and
housekeeping. They were accom-
panied by Mrs. Vesta Clark who is
spending some time in the west with
her daughter and family.
Mrs. Ida Apnlegate of Kansas City
was a guest for a number of days
the past weak at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. D. Ray Frans and also visit
ed with other friends here. Mrs.
Applegate formerly resided here and
has many friends in Union and vi-

God remembered Hannah and gave
her a son, whom she called Samuel,
in the Hebrew, "Shamuel." Two
others bear that name in the Old
Testament. Numbers 34:20 and I
Chron. 7:2. Samuel was born 1171
B. C. and died 1060 B. C. Ill years
old. He was married and had two
sons, Joel or Vashti and Abiah. For
three years his mother had him un
der her care and planted the seed of
reverance to God in his plastic mind
and heart.
There is the secret of the salva
tion of the world the Christian
home. Unless we come back to God,
erect the family altar that is broken
down; teach our children reverence
for God and the church; dedicate
them to his service, lead them to
Christ who can change their heart
and life, and fit them for his service.
The future of the human race is
safe, if our youth is safe in the
arms of Jesus. But the great mass
of the homes of our nation are not
Christian homes; Christ finds no
loom in them; he does' not rule in
them, which is very apparent, even
among church members. They find
no joy in the house of God; they are
absent from the prayer meetings
many do not attend Bible school
never Sunday evening service. They
are virtual strangers in the church.
So the church finds it. necessary to
close its doors Wednesday evening
and Sunday night.
Where do the people go? Where
do our young people go? "Remem
ber the Sabbath day to keep it holy.'
Hannah brought up her boy in the
atmosphere of a pious home, and he
knew nothing else but to do the will
of God. When three years of age, he
came to the house of God, was look
ed after by the women who served in
the tabernacle.
in rormer years, cniidren were
regarded as a gift from God. So we
read Ps. 127:3: "Lo, children are an
heritage of the Lord, and the fruit
of the womb is his reward." (See
Gen. 33:5; I Sam. 1:27).
The song Hannah recalls others
of women of the Bible: Sarah (Gen.
21:6); Deborah (Judges 5); Mary's
Magnificate (Luke 1:40-55); The
Benedictus (Luke l:6S-70).
It would seem that Penninah's'
children died (Chap. 2:3) and Han
nah had three sons and two daugh
ters. So God rewards those who
trust him. He does hear and answers
prayer. Praise his name!
it was inconvenient to do the bus!
ness which comes to this institu
tion. A change has been going on
and an addition with gable looking to
the south and a proposed extension
to the north for more room. Wayne
Ackley, Ralph Pearsley and Mr. Stites
are doing the work, which is being
pushed forward speedily.
Return Home From North.
Mr. and Mrs. Ben Anderson and
little son who have been at Sioux
City where Ben has been employed
during the vacation months, return
ed to Union last week and will take
up the work of getting the school
building in proper condition for the
opening of school September 6th.
Visiting in the West.
Mrs. Clara James and Miss Lenna
Barbara, Mrs. Mabel E. Reynolds,
Miss Isabel Osborne who is visiting
here at the home of Mrs. Clara James,
with Paul Davis as the driver de
parted early this week for Denver
and other points in Colorado on a
ten-day vacation.
No Services at M. E. Church Sunday.
There will be no services at the
Methodist church of Union next Sun
day. The pastor. Rev. E. P. Booher
is to have that day as a day of rest.
Following the regular services will
be continued. Other service of the
day will be had.

All in all the program was quite
entertaining and displayed some real
talent among the children in the art
of acting.
