NAMES NEW WHEAT
LINCOLN, Aug. 12 (UP) The
Nebraska college of agriculture to
day announced that iis new wheat
variety, Nebraska No. 10G3, has been
named "nebred."
The desippiation was suggested by
E. A. Burnett, Chancellos Emeritus
and former dean of the college.
University agronomists formally
placed their stamp of approval on
the new wheat type, but said no seed
will be available for distribution until
after the 1939 harvest. Production
this year totaled only 1,100 pounds
and the entire supply was dispossd
of for fall planting.
Nebred wheat has been given con
stant tests at the Nebraska experi
ment station since 1923. Its gradu
ation into the group of wheats recom
the result of consistant high perfor
mance. Experts t;aid nebred is ertremely
resistant to bunt or stinking smut,
has exceptionally good milling and
baking qualities, yields well and is
very winter hardy. It is not, how
ever, resistant to stem rust, but ranks
above the leading Cheyenne variety
in that respect.
Agriculturists believe nebred will
find favor among Nebraska farmers,
particularly in eastern counties, where
the Cheyenne variety has fallen into
some disfavor with farmers in years
of 'rust epidemic.
