In Sherman county in 1S76, grasshoppers ate grass, and they stripped trees of leaves; when they had eaten all veg etation, they ate the paint off the buildings. In 1ST", m?vspapers urged every one to fight grasshoppers. Settlers tried many ingenious expedients, say research workers of the Federal Writers' Project. WVA. In April, 1R77, N'ebraskans learned a method that again became familiar in 1937.1 Every farmer should plant castor! beans. Castor beans attracted the J j grasshoppers and when the hoppers had eaten them they died. In 1S77 this advice came from Colorado; in 1937. from Kansas. Farmers devised many machines to carry on the fight.
