"Maintaining; Personal Efficiency''
Dan. 1:8-1(5, 19, 20; I Cor. 9:24
27. (A personal aspect of temper
ance). Men in all ages have recognized
the fact that if a man wants to be
at his best, he must practice phy
sical cleanliness and self-control.
One example is Joseph, one of Jacob's
sons. 1700 R. C, who by a virtuous
life and self-control rose to be a
"Dictator" in Egypt; (See Gen. 41:
41) and as he later said, that while
he had done his part, it was the high
and holy plan of God for a great pur
pose (See Gen. 45:7-S). So God re
wards faithful service and fidelity.
A thousand years later we have
another example, 000 R. C. in Dan
iel, who in the great city of Baby
lon. at the court of Nebuchandneezer,
achieved a position like Joseph, by
clean living and self-control and the
epitaph on his tombstone is "He be
lieved in God." (Dan. 6:23).
The third character in our lesson
is the matchless Paul of whom much
is to be said, but who also achieved
the eminence he enjoyed by (he same
means, namely: Clean living and
self-control.
These are characters of the past.
What of men of our time?
W. J. Rryan, Senator Shepherd of
Texas, father of the ISth amend
ment, etc. They too stand out as
exponents of clean living who also
practiced what they preached.
We lake up the study of the lad
Daniel and his three friends. These
boys, about 1 1 years old, wore pris
oners of war: they came from Pales
tine, being Jews, and were taken
into Babylon in Mesopotamia, to the
capitol of Chaldeo. They were fine
lads of royal blood, well trained in
the customs of Jewish law. They
knew the difference of clean and
wholesome food and the result. God
had a plan and purpose for these
boys, as he has for every boy and
girl, if they will commit their life
and future into His hand take God
into their life; He v ill find a way
for them that they will get into the
right place, and will not be "mis
fits." Rut it is not the easy road
think of Joseph, and Daniel and his
friends. We marvel at the simple
faith and confidence they displayed,
putting God to the test. They were
mere children; that shows. what good
home training can do bend the tree
when young. Think of the twelve-year-old
boy Jesus of Nazareth.
How did God honor the faith of
these youths? After a ten days trial
they were physically better than the
ones who had lived sumptuously on
the king's food. Then for conscience
take they abstained from food offer
ed to idola another result of right
occasion were Win. Sporer and chil
dren, Chester Sporer and family of
Mynard, Martin Sporer and family
of Murray and Charles Sporer and
wife of Murray.
Will Attend Summer School.
Professor J. Greer who has been
the superintendent or the Murray
scholos, with the closing of the
school year, has moved to Lincoln
where he expects to attend school
this summer and will return to Mur
ray in the fall.
To Move to Murray This Week.
Rev. Kinney who comes to the
Murray Christian church as its min
ister, well recommended as a very
proficient orator and an earnest
worker for the church and commun
ity will move to Murray this week.
He was here last Lord's day and
delivered a pleasing discourse. The
men were over to the parsonage
cleaning the premises and planting
a garden for the minister and his
wife. The ladies of the church at
the same time put the house in order,
cleaning the interior, placing the
building in very line condition for
the reception of the minister and
family.
Improvements at Lumber Yard.
The Murray lumber yard has been
making some important improve
ments and adding more room for the
handling of the lumber business.
Some time ago concrete leaders were
laid for the holding of outside lum
ber, shingles dimension stuff and the
like. Monday of this week A. A.
Young assisted by Walter Allen were
making more leaders to care for the
storage of the building materials.
Entertain Relatives.
Mr. and Mrs. Daylo Tigner were
host and hostess to a gathering of
friends and relatives at' their home
last Sunday. Those present were
Mr. and Mrs. Edward Freeman, par
ents of Mrs. Tigner. Frank Nickles
and Frank Lawther of Weeping Wa-

home training. Then after a three
years course of schooling, upon, ex
amination they were ten times far
ther advanced than all their class
mate magicians and enchanters,
but Daniel "had understanding in
all wisdom and dreams" an extra
gilt from God.
Now we may ask: "Does it pay
to trust God?"
Science corroborates the teachings
of the Rible that indulgence in the
use of strong drinlf as well as over
eating is harmful to the body and
lessens our efficiency for work. Life
insurance companies are very care
ful not to insure drinkers and em
ployers want only sober men to en
trust with the carrying on of their
business.
In the spiritual realm, it is still
of greater importance to live clean
lives and develop those God-given
talents that make us efficient in the
service of God. to lead and teach
others the way of holiness and the
victorious life. Here the Apostle
Paul is the best example that can
be produced. Six hundred years af
ter Daniel God needed a "chosen ves
sel" for a great missionary enter
prize. He found a man with a de
termination of purpose like Daniel,
but it was bent in the wrong direc
tion. God had to make Paul over,
then he was just as purposeful as
Daniel. The process of making Paul
over was a painful procedure, but
Cod knew his man. for he says: "He
is a chosen vessel unto inc. to bear
my name before the Gentiles and
kin.s and the children of Israel."
(Acts 9:15). And Paul realized
what it meant; no weakling, no
slothful, no half-hearted character
could withstand what was required
of him. Had he been efficienet be
fore his conversion, he must also be
so now in this "high calling." So
he goes into (raining, using terms
oe the Greek athletes. To be a win
ner in a race, he has to follow se
vere and strict rules of living.
"Temperate in all things" means
to deny ones self many things that
otherwise he might indulge in. The
Christian life is a "lace" for a goal;
the runner strips himself of every
superfluous thing ( Heb. 12:1-2). It
is also a "fight." "I have fought a
good light." Our adversary is the
Devil. He is coining and strong; wo
need a good armour which God has
provided. (Read here Eph. G:10
1S). No Christian can indulge in
anything that will be harmful to his
body; it will also weaken his soul;
he cannot be at his best, and God
will not be satisfied with any less.
A clean body, a clean soul, a clean
fight, a clean race climaxed with a
crown of Life.

Nehawka postmasters as well as a
