First Air
Mail Pickup is
Staged Today
Filot James M. Hurst of Lincoln Re
ceives Pouches of 700 Letters
at Stull Farm.
From Thursday's Dally
Zooming out of the southwest this
noon at 12:20 Pilot James L. Hurst
brought his monoplane to rest in the
hay meadow at the Stull farm north
of this city to make completion of
the first air mail pickup from the
local postoffice.
The plane was ahead of time here
after the short stops at Weeping Wa
ter and Murray, leaving the latter
place at 12:15 and completing the
landing here at 12:20.
The meadow was deep in grass and
several soft spots from the recent
rains interfered to some extent with
the landing but the pilot skillfully
steered his ship to the more solid
parts of the meadow for the takeoff.
Dr. Frank L. Cummins, local post
master, was at the field to place in
the hands of the pilot the two
pouches that contained some 700 let
ters from the residents of the com
munity, most of these being sent to
friends at distant points and carry
ing in addition the message of greet
ing on the envelopes which had been
especially prepared by the Journal
for the oc(jasion.
A group of close to 100 had gath
ered at the field and cars were kept
parked at safe distance by Sheriff
Homer Sylvester and Deputy Cass
Sylvester.
After a few moments chat with
Postmaster Cummins, the pilot took
off over the hills of the Stull home
stead, following the course of the
Platte river to Louisville, his last
stop before returning to the Lincoln
airport. Weather conditions over the
route were reported good by the
pilot.
Pilot Hurst was one of the fifty-
five pilots that were flying over Ne
braska today in observance of air
mail week, visiting 213 towns in all
parts of the state to receive from the
small communities their first direct
air mail service.
Pickups were cancelled at several
southeastern Nebraska points when
pilots reported that rains last night
made it inadvisable to land. Mail at
Dawson, Rulo and Stella was sent to
Falls City and from Kumboldt, Elk
Creek, Johnson and Cook to Tecum
seh where Pilot Harry B. Sidles made
the pickups.
AK-SAR-BEN DEN SHOWS
START MONDAY, JUNE 6
In announcing the re-appointment
of their Plattsmouth ambassador for
the coming Year, Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben
has also announced the dates of the
various Ak-Sar-Ben activities, start
ing with the annual race meet and
running through the season to the
live stock and horse show in the fall.
The race met starts Saturday, May
2S, and continues through July 4.
In keeping with its progressive
policies Ak-Sar-Ben will introduce
for the first time in the middlewest
the Pacific totalizer, an automatic
ticket printing system, electrically
operated and controlled in the
judge's stand. This modern innova
tion follows the introduction last
year of the "camera eye," which re
cords the position of every horse as
it crosses the finish line. The totaliz
er prints each individual ticket as
the customer calls for it.
Den Shows Start June 6
The famous Den shows will start
on Monday, June C, and continue
for seven Mondays in June and July.
Decision to continue the shows on
Monday night was reached after a
poll of Ak-Sar-Ben ambassadors
throughout the state showed that
night to be by far the most popular.
The den shows are open to all
out-state residents without cost. As
in the past, the show will be follow
ed by a buffet supper and dancing,
all free. Plattsmouth night probably
will be either the 13th or 20th of
June, although the date has iyjt as
yet been announced.
The Ak-Sar-Ben Live Stock and
Horse Show will open on Sunday
afternoon, October 23, and continue
through Saturday night, October 29.
LAWNS SHOW REVIVAL
For the first time in several years
the lawns over the city are showing
the possibilities , of regaining their
old time beauty and charm. The lawn
at the Cass county court house which
has been the object of much care and
attention from the custodians for the
past three years, is now coming up in
excellent shape. The grass was com
pletely killed out last year and it
was necessary to have the lawn re
seeded this spring and with the best
of results.
See the goods you buy. Catalog
descriptions are alluring enough,
but how about the Goods when
you get them'?
