Perry Wright of Weeping Water, who is foreman for the making and installing of the sanitary units, a Bible, School Sunday, May 1st "Following Vision with Service" Mark 9:14-29. It is a universal experience among men that after a great exaltation comes a great depression, after great joy often a deep sorrow, after a bright day a dark night. These things are not strange, we expect ( them, therefore are not surprised when they come. We find this phe nomena in our lesson. Jesus and three of his disciples had an experi ence that no other man ever had. So enraptured were the disciples that they would have liked to pro long the ecstacy of their joy, and proposed to build tabernacles tem porary dwellings. But this is a changeable world, nothing perma nent. Then we have the spectacle of a strong one meeting a stronger one and the fight is on. (Luke 11:21 22 ) . The circumstances are as follows: Jesus had left nine of the apostles at the foot of the mountain; a great multitude of people with some scribes, who in the absence of Jesus tried to discredit him to the people, and then the humiliating spectacle of the disciple trying to cast out a devil, which they had done before; that nade matters worse and the scribes were having their inning it was their hour of triumph. How fortunate for the disciples and the cause that Jesus was near. When it seemed that the battle was lost, He, as a good general, turned it into victory. That has been the experience of untold thousands of Christians through the ages. When the storms are about to sink the boat, Jesus appears and stills the wind and the waves. In the dark est hour. He appears and says: "It is I. be not afraid." O, for grace to trust Him more. What about the scribes by this time? They had said too much and Jesus shows them up as liars. But as soon as Jesus appears the multi tude runs to meet him; they gave Him a great ovation; they were amazed, because they had not ex pected Him at this time but the Son of Man comes for some when lease expected. (See Matt. 24:42 and 23:13). Others may interest or in struct us for a time, but Jesus is the great magnet who draws us away from human discussion to his own divine revelations. Jesus got no answer to his ques tion. As the Son of God Jesus knew all things; as the son of man he did not know all things. Sometimes in the Scriptures Jesus is revealed in his divine nature and sometimes in his human nature here he asks for information. The scribes thruout Jesus' ministry, according to the re corded gospels, were throwing hard questions at his disciples as well as government project, was looking after after some business in Union last Monday, consulting with the lum ber yard as to some building ma terials. Mr. and Mrs. Henry II. Becker were in Omaha Monday of this week. Mrs. Becker went to visit her phy sician regarding her recent treatment at the hospital where she also under went an operation. She is making very good improvement and is hoping to be entirely recovered in a short time. M. R. McCarthey of Louisville was a business visitor in Union look ing after the prospect of furnishing moving picture service for the vil lage, bu as there had been another party here with a similar proposal, the matter was not entirely cared for, but it seems as though Union is to have some free movies during the summer season. Makes Trip Out State. George A. Sties, the elevator man, received an order for corn to go to Clay Center and took it out last Monday morning, and going rather early was accompanied by the rain last Monday which while a very nice shower, got heavier as he went west and at Eagle he found the storm very heavy, but even more so after arriving at Lincoln and out in Saline and Clay county almost amounted to a cloudburst with the water stand ing in the fields. The people out that way were pleased as they have had a minimum of moisture in re cent years. Interested in Apple Growing. The pretty apple blossoms which adorn the trees covering the hills where W. 15. Banning has his apple orchards and as well the orchards farther down the river, attracted many from north and west and thou sands of people were down to Union, Nebraska City and Peru last Sunday to witness the beautiful sight. More Lesson Study! By L. Neitzel, Murdock, Neb. to the Lord trying to stump them on certain technicalities but not to Jesus in this instance. Here comes a father with a heavy burden on his soul. A child in the home is possessed of a devil, surely a great sorrow to those parents (how old the boy was is not known). The malady would not yield to medical treatment, it had to be endured. The father had undoubtedly heard or seen the twelve disciples cast out demons, so he tries the disciples but they failed at this time. For what reason? Had they lost the power they once had? They had lost the power like Samson his strength. After the father had described the symptoms, Jesus administered a well deserved rebuke to the multi tude and disciples. The Lord had been two and one-half years per forming miracles of healing among these people, and had never failed; bad he not reason enough to expect faith? "O faithless generation!" Whenever men go to hell it is on account of unbelief. Xo matter what sin men commit or omit, they can and will be forgiven, upon repent ance, but unbelief will not be for given. "Believe on the Lord, Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved." "I believe; help thou my un belief." "Bring him unto me." And they brought him to Jesus. In the presence of Jesus, the evil spirit, in hi3 rage, sought to destroy the child. Note that this is not an ordinary case of epilepsy; here the evil spirit is explicitly named as causing the violent fit. This child had suffered this ailment from his childhood on. As every parent knows, there is a tendency in some children to tell lies, others have terrible tempers when three or four years old, and stil others have a tendency to im purity, which can only be removed by the grace of God before they come to full manhood. How important it is "from a child" young people should be brought to know the Lord, Jesus Christ. The father's cry touches Jesus; faith is the victor. "All things are possible to him that believeth." Jesus had worked up to this mo ment. He seeks faith in men un belief ties His hands. What a tre mendous power the demon exerts over man, but Jesus i3 the "strong er" and overcame the devil. The cure i3 instantaneous and complete. The perplexed disciples have a question to which Jesus gives the answer. Prayer is the key to the powerhouse of God. The disciples did not think of prayer. They had let faith droop at once and thus failed. But why had they neglected prayer? The answer is in one sad word depression. Field Trials of Blooded Dogs to be Held Saturday and Sunday Event Will Be Staged on the Platte Bottoms North of This City. The Cass County Sportsmen's club will be host Saturday and Sunday to the field dog trials that are spon sored by the Missouri Valley Hunt clubs and which will bring here blooded and thoroughbred hunting dogs from all sections of the country. It is expected to hold the events east of the Burlington Orealopis tower. Spaniels and retrievers will be fea tured in the two day event and the entries will embrace dogs from all parts of the United States and some of the internationally known hunt ing animals will be brought here for the event. Prominent among the entries from other states is R. E. Allen, Provo, Utah, banker, who will put his fa mous Timpanagos Tex, a spaniel, in to the open all age competition. More than forty entries have been received and the event promises to be something that will be a real treat to the hunters and lovers of thoroughbred dogs and something that it is very seldom given the resi dents of this section to enjoy. than a thousand cars drove through the apple orchards of Mr. Banning while many more journeyed on south to see the other orchards there. The abundant blooms indicate a large apple crop which has not occurred for a number of years. Adds to Feeder Cattle. A. L. Becker was in Omaha some time ago where he made the pur chase of some 3S feeder cattle which he is feeding in his large pasture east of Union where he now has an abundance of water and grass. Attended Masonic Roundup. A. L. Becker and wife and a num ber of other Masons were over to Nehawka last Thursday attending the Masonic Roundup, as the mem bership is divided between Nehawka and Union, many of the people were over to enjoy the occasion. A chorus of some twenty-five young ladies from Lincoln were down to attend the roundup and to enjoy the day. A very delightful banquet was served by the ladies of the lodge. Attending National Conclave. The national convention of the American Red Cross is being held in San Francisco this coming week from May 2nd to and including May 5th. Mrs. R. E. Norris of near Weeping Water is the accredited delegate to the convention from Cass county. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Midkiff were pleased last Sunday when their chil dren and families came to make the day a happy one for the parents. There were there for the day Messrs. and Mesdames Oscar Midkiff and the family, Matthew Midkiff and family and Earl Freeman and family, thus making the meeting a full family re union. MUSIC AND LIVING One need but reflect a moment to realize the truly natural and import ant part music, plays in our lives. Consciously or unconsciously each of us contribute our share toward ap preciation of music at some time in our life. Sweet music to the ear of every parent is their baby's first coo and gurgle. The mother's hummed, sung or even whistled lullaby is every baby's comfort and a mother's pleas ure. The tiny child hums at its play, imparting contentment and happi ness to the mother. A hymn or a game song may be the child's first musical rhythm effort but how earn est and sweet. No child need be deprived of the pleasure of music, even though he may not be fortunate enough to be trained in the art of making music, he can easily be trained to appre ciate the beauty of music so easily accessible about us. Our churches, our schools and our homes abound in an opportunity for every individual to share in the en joyment of an art that will inspire, console, cheer and satisfy the desire of any person in any language. MRS. F. I. REA. Weeping Water Hubert Cappen was looking after business matters in Plattsmouth last Friday and Saturday. The new Cass County Agent, Mr. Quackenbush, has arrived and taken over his duties, succeeding D. D. Wainscott, who resigned to go into other work. Frank Pankonin of near Louisville was a visitor in Weeping Water last Tuesday, looking after some business matters and visiting with a number of his friends here. Mr. and Mrs. G. R. Binger and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Bolz and their little son made up a party who drove to Union and Nebraska City last Sunday to see the apple blossoms, which they say were .in full bloom and well worth the trip. Virgil Sudduth and family of near Murray, and Guy Buchanan and fam ily, who reside near Nehawka, were quests last Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Askew and son, Lawrence, where all enjoyed a very fine visit as well as a splendid dinner. Sam Smith, who has been work ing with a crew of telephone com pany linemen near Greeley, Colorado, lestoring service after the recent storm in that part of the country, returned home during the past week. He was accompanied by Elmer Jo sephson, Humphrey Ash and W. C. Maxfield, all of whom have been working in the west. Stuart Rough of Nehawka came to Weeping Water last Sunday and got his sister. Miss Agnes Rough, they going to Nebraska City, where they wound in and around the dif ferent orchards that were in full bloom and presented a most beauti ful spectacle. They found the roads packed with cars from Lincoln, Om aha and other points, who had come to view the spectacle. Make Visit to Iowa Teter Spangler and brother, John C. Spangler and Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Spangler, starting early Sunday morning, drove to Hastings, Iowa, where they enjoyed a visit for the cay at the home of a sister of the Spangler boys, Mrs. Diston Hite. Apple Blossoms and Truffles Ross Shields and wife and Mr. and Mrs. George Olive made a pleasant trip to Nebraska City on last Sunday, where they went to en joy the Apple Blossom tour which led through the orchard of W. B. Banning at Union and as well as large orchards near Nebraska City, where the trees were in full bloom. After their trip they returned to Weeping Water and then during the afternoon made a trip to Louisville, where with Mr. and Mrs. Carl Chris tensen they went to the Platte river bottoms, where they gathered truf fles and mushrooms. They found them very plentiful and enjoyed a mushroom supper after their trips during the day. Jones, leader of the Rebekah team, of Weeping Water which was putting on the degree work, Miss Fern Davis and Mrs. Creda Johnson and Miss Helen Norton, making in all some sixteen who attended. Another Building in Progress With the finishing of the Michel sen store and its occupancy last week another building is on the way now. This is being built by Troy L. Davis who has a crew of local workmen pushing the construction, and an oc cupant is waiting for the completion of the building that he may occupy Walter H. Smith LAWYER Plattsmouth State Bank Building Plattsmouth, Nebraska Howard Davis Attorney at Law Plattsmouth b 5 L it. The materials for the construc tion are being purchased locally. No pains or expense is being spared to make this building the last word in excellence. When this building is completed it is hinted that two other buildings will be constructed, one for the telephone company and an other occupant is ready for the fourth building. Thisspeaks well for Weeping Wa ter who is again getting back on her feet. It looks as if the business sec tion of Weeping Water will be better than before the devastating fire. Visiting with Sister Here Mrs. Otto Lau who makes her home in Denver has veen visiting in Weep ing Water for the past week, guest of her sister, Mrs. Henry P. Smith and family and other friends in Weeping Water. Mrs. Lau formerly made her home here and has a large circle of friends whom she is pleased to meet and visit. MUSIC Music hath charm to soothe the beast How truthfully hath been spoken. And it brings "Content," "Joy," "Peace-serene," To a heart that is sadly broken. It takes you back to your childhood days To scenes you have left behind you. Just one sweet chord of a lilting song Of your care-free youth, remind you. It brings the "Good" in your cal lous soul To the surface to radiate joy, All your evil thoughts and intentions One melody will destroy. And when it seems in the "Battle of Life" Your struggles have been in vain. The zest to "light" is restored to you, By the notes of a sweet refrain. Charles Franklin.
