THURSDAY, DECEMBER 2, 1937. PAGE POUR PLATTSMOTJTH SEMI - WEEKLY JOTTRNA1 450,000 Resi dents of State Have License Expected That Larger Number Will Be Enrolled in December by Patrolmen. LINCOLN, Dec. 1 (UP) State of ficials estimated approximately 450, 000 Nebraskans held drivers oper ation licenses today as the original 90-day period for obtaining permits ended. R. W. Culwell, chief of the state motor vehicle registration division had expected 600,000 licenses to be issued. He said he did not know whether this figure would be reached during December. Culwell said the examiners would adhere to the increased fee for renew als (from 75c to $1) at least until Saturday after he was informed that County Attorney Edmond Nuss and County Treasurer A. J. Theobald of Hastings believe the state is with out authority to raise the renewal charge after November 30. After Sat urday Culwell said he was uncertain what policy might prevail. Next week the full corps of examiners will be withdrawn and the permits issued only by 24 highway patrolmen as signed temporarily as examiners They will visit each county. Culwell pointed out that the ruling increas ing the renewal fee came from the attorney general and not his depart ment. County Treasurer Theobald said he was considering a plan whereby he would charge $1.00 for renewals but would set up a fund from which he could refund the 25c to drivers should the question be settled in con firmation with the views of the coun ty attorney and himself. BURGLARS CLOSE SCHOOL LUCAS. O. (UP) When thieves broke into the Lucas school base ment and stole an electric motor they sent 300 pupils on a forced vacation until a new motor could be installed to operate the school's water system, j Bible School Sunday, December 5th . "Christian Rest" Matt. 11:28-30; Heb. 4:1-11. On this one point the great mass of people are agreed, that we live in a restless age.. Constantly people are on the move; dissatisfied with their job, environments, conditions, climate, etc., and many times as peo ple move from one place to another, disappointment awaits them in their new surroundings. This is not a perfect world, since man by disobeying God, brought a curse upon it (Gen. 3:17). The curse is found wherever man is found. Jesus, observing the plight of the Jews under Roman rule and also op pressed by their spiritual leaders, in his great compassion cries out: "Come unto ME, all ye that labor" are toiling and burdened. The Master may have seen an animal laboring Tinder an overload, almost ready to break down. Who are the "heavy laden?" The figure is taken from an overloaded boat, about ready to be submerged. All those that are bur dened with anxieties and cares, or with heavy and lumbering traditions of men, and who are nigh of being swamped, living in perpetual fear of submersion. "Come unto me, and I will give you rest." What is meant by this term, rest? It is that harmony with God which qualifies men for life's engagements, for its ceaseless conflicts and con quests, for its fruitful toil, and for its noblest and highest purposes. This is what Christ came to effect in men. This is the object of all Hi3 work and the interpretation of all Ilis passion. Sin is causing all the unrest, the poison which has fevered every life. Sin is the root of all weariness and weakness which robs life of its true quality. And when Christ offers rest to the weary and heavy laden. He is proposing to deal with sin, which has created their need. "Take My yoke upon you and learn of me." When the ycke is laid upon the neck of the ox, it means that it has some special work to do; that it is not left any longer to graze idly in the field or to do what it pleases. Christ takes upon himself one end of the yoke and you the other end, and so come to be yoked together with Him. Fiom this yoke, we are to learn obed ience, humility, meekness, his love for others, absolute faith in God. Then and only then is rest found. This all partaina .to this life the experience of the Christian. Our second passage deals with a SHERLOCK HOLMES' TACTICS IN CRIME CALLED DEAD MEMPHIS, Tenn. (UP) Crimes are not solved by "story book methods of master mind detectives," Carey Pickard, special agent of the Mem phis Federal Bureau of Investiga tion, said in an address here. "Crimes are solved by plain com mon sense, hard work, everlasting perseverance and attention to the small things," Pickard said. "The federal bureau of investigation does not catch criminals by pipe smoking Sherlock Holmes methods." Pickard pointed out that few men are able to pass requirements neces sary to become a federal agent. To qualify a person must be between the ages of 23 and 35 years, have gradu ated from a law school or had legal experience, and qualify as an account ant. DRAW LIFE TERM SIDNEY, Neb., Dec. 1 (UP) Or ville Childers and William Bomon, confessed slayers of William Moore, were sentenced to life imprisonment on the third jury ballot last night on charges of first degree murder. Moore, pioneer Sidney resident, was found brutally murdered in his home Nov. 12. In their confession, the two men said they intended to rob Moore, but were forced to kill him when he surprised them. They will be taken to the state penitentiary in Lincoln today. The jury brought in its sentence after two hours of deliberation. For two ballots, the vote ran eleven to one for life imprisonment. On the third ballot, the vote was unanimous. THREE WAIVE CLADT TO $45,000 ESTATE ELYRIA. O. (UP) An inheritance of $45,500 was refused by three bene ficiaries of the estate of Frank Caley, when three children of the deceased brought suit to break the will. Caley left $5,000 to his housekeep er, and the rest to a nephew and a neighbor. His children charged their father was not of sound mind when he made the will. All the beneficiaries agreed. Lesson Study! By L. Neitzel, Murdock, Neb. rest of another kind; it is spoken of as "the rest of God." Here we go back to the creation, when God rest ed, ceased creating, for his work was finished. He has only to preserve His creation. (This chapter is con sidered very difficult to teach). Has our first passage tought us that we find rest in Christ; that makes the soul calm and tranquil in this rest less world. This passage goes fur ther and says: "There remained therefore a sabbath rest for the peo ple of God." Israel did not obtain it unbelief and disobedience lost them this boon; they were to have rest in Canaan, but they did not destroy the adultrous people and they became a snare to them. Now God respects his promise it must not fail what the Israelites lost we may find. God rested the seventh day; Israel had the sabbath year; the earth will have her millenium the seven thou sandeth year the faithful Christian has a lively hope of an eternal rest. It is true that we enjoy rest in Christ by faith in this life. But the perfect enjoyment of rest is still in the future. Believers will enter into rest after their earthly pilgrimage, their labor and conflict. The sub stance and fortaste of this rest we have even now in Christ. By rest is not meant inactivity, but peace and harmony within and with all that is around us. In the future we will see and know as we are known, we will possess minds, bodies, energies and powers, perfect and adequate in struments of their God-filled volitions. never faint and weary, with all ob structions removed. We will both reign and rest with Christ. (See Rev. 14:13).- Rest follows labor. Man must be diligent, industrious, give heed and attention to his deportment here, that js the condition: "Be faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life." (Rev. 2:10). Not that a man will wear the crown it is piven as a recognition of faithful service. See Matt. 25:21. "My soul in sad exile was out on life's sea, so burdened with sin and distressed; Till I heard a sweet voice saying, 'Make me your choice,' and I entered the 'haven of rest.' "I've anchored my soul in the 'haven of rest;' I'll sail the wild sea no more. The tempest may sweop otr the wild, stormy sea. In Jesus I'm safe ever more." "And I shall see him face to face. And tell the story, saved by grace." EAGLE ( ITEMS Mrs. Emma Judkins visited from Tuesday until Sunday with relatives in Lincoln.
