Ross. Herman C. Ross of near Union whc Bible School Sunday, November 28 "Christian Fruitfulness" ' John 15:1-16.- In this allegory we are taught the deepest meaning of the vital union with Christ. This is one of the last teachings of Jesus, after the institut ing of the Last Supper and before his passion in Gethsemane. The desciples were in a very receptive mood for such teaching. A branch had just been removed from the vine (Judir.s Iscarioth). This must have made a deep impression on the eleven. This metaphor must have been suggested by the 'fruit of the vine," which had just been consecrated in the Holy Supper (Matt. 26:30) and the alle gory was intended to illustrate the main idea underlying that holy rite, namely, union with Christ. It sets forth Christ as the soul source of spiritual life, and of Christian sanctity. The vine here referred to is the grape vine, which was exten sively cultivated in Palestine. "The vine is the symbol of Israel, not in their national, but in their church capacity." (Edersheim). See Psalm S0:8; Isa. 5:1; Jer. 2:21; Hosea 10:1. It was also a symbol of the Messiah (Delitsch). Accordingly Christ here affirms (a) that he is the true Messiah; (b) that His church is the true Israel of God, and His followers the true! Israelites. I Cor., 10: IS; Gal. 6:16; I Pet. 2:9; Rev. 2:0; 3:9. (c) that He is the one fountain of spiritual life, supplying all needful grace to believers. The figure of the vine and branches corresponds to that of the body and members; it shows the mysterious, but real and vital union which subsists between Christ and individual believers. Union with Christ, some hold, is normally begun in baptism; others hold it is when the new birth takes place; but it is established some time. The purpose of this union is frui bearing. What may be considered fruit in the Christian life? Character" and conduct are fruit; so is influence, reverence for God; love for the word of God they are seeds of eternal life. Prayers are also fruit. Fruit is the spontaneous production of a plant, the forth-putting of its life and 3ap. The unfruitful are taken away, the fruitful are cleanseth to become more fruitful. What do we understand by cleansing? The ref erence is (1) to the discipline of sorrow, disappointment, temptation and trial, by which the saints are perfected. Ileb. 12:0; Rev. 3:19 and Hcb- 5:&. (2) tj the cutting off of the euperiluities;, ambitions, luxuries has been ill for some time and has been at the hospital in Omaha, pass ed away there last Monday at 3 o'clock, and was brought to Weeping Water by Richmond Hobson of the Hobson funeral home where the re mains lay in state until Wednesday afternoon when the funeral was held, conducted by Rev. W. A. Taylor of Union with interment at the cemetery near Otoe. Entertaining for Thanksgiving. Mr. and Mrs. W H. Homan are act ing as host and hostess to a number of relatives and friends at their home in Weeping Water to a real old-fashioned Thanksgiving day dinner. Those present for the occasion are their daughter, Ruth, Mr. and Mrs. Perry Rector, Byron Baker and fam ily and Sanford Homan and family, the latter two of Weeping Water. This completed the family circle and made a most delightful gathering, with a nicely roasted turkey to grace the center of the dinner table. Met with Mrs. George Olson. Professor John Weatherhogg super intendent of schools at Plainview, Ne braska, where he has been for a number of years, accompanied by his wife and son arrived in Weeping Wa- Lesson Study! By L. Neitzel, Murdock, Neb. and worldly pleasures and lusts that hinder the Christian life. Gal. 5:24; C:14; James 1:21. Nothing but fruit can satisfy God. The branch can bear fruit only as long as it is in union with the viner separation from the branch means death. How sad to see people follow Christ afar off; still believing them selves Christians. O for a closer walk with God! "Abide in me,' Jesus says nine times. That means a great deal more than a mere acceptance of Christ. It means the whole of the conscious nature of Christ being sat urated with Christ's words, his de sires, his understanding, his affec tions, his will, all being steeped in the great truths which the Master spoke. We can do many things without Christ go to church pay to th-3 cause of Christ offer prayers study his word teach and preach but there is one thing we cannot do un less our life and service spring from our union with the Lord Jesus, and that is we cannot bear fruit. It is all to the glory of God to see live fruit-bearing branches. Abiding in Jesus means much prayer. We bear so little fruit because there is so little prayer. The greatest fruit the church can bear, is the conversion of the world; that will bring glory to God and joy into the hearts of all cf Christ's followers. As Jesus had a joy that night in his heart that no one could take from him, so can we have a joy that will carry us through to the end. The joy of Jesus was based on four thing3, namely (a) his know ledge of God's over-ruling and guid ance in everything that was hap pening to Him; (b) in his conscious ness of the Father's love; (c) in his realization that he was doing the work of God laying down his life for men, and finally (d) in the con viction that he was, in his death, go ing home to his Father' from whom he had coma. This joy all may have who abide in Him. And then the joy of the friend ship of Jesus. There are always two parties to friendship. A friendship is formed when love meets and answers love. We prove our friendship to Jesus if wo do what he commands us. Our song, "I Choose Christ is not in keeping with verse 16. "Y did not choose me, but I choose you. Jesu3 came to seek and save. On the cross ho could say, "The work is fin ished." "Father! I am coming borne, in Uhy hands I commit my Spirit." ter this morning, coming to visit for the remainder of the week with her sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. E. L. McCartney. They are dining for the Thanksgiving day here and en joying a very fine visit as well. Are Entertaining for Dinner. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Keckler are host and hostess today at their home in Weeping Water for Thanksgiving dinner, having as their guests for the occasion their parents. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Keckler of Weeping Water Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Greene and son James of Elmwood and Max Campbell and wife of Lincoln. 1 Entertaining for Thanksgiving. Mr. and Mrs. Ross Shields are en tertaining today at their home for Thankigiving, having with them Mr. W. L. Hobson. Mrs. Hobson is visit ing her parents in California, where she will be for a week or so, so Mr. Hobson is a guest for the day at the home of his friends. Spirited Football Game. The two high school football teams from Union came to Weeping Water last Monday and played the two teams of the Weeping Water high school, both games being very spirited. Weep ing Water winning both games. The score of the first team game was Weeping Water 24, Union 14. The score of the second game was Weep ing Water 11, Union 6. To Work on Water Reservoir. The contractor for the building and enlarging of the reservoir holding the water supply of the city of Weep ing Water, is expecting soon to start work on the contract and continue until it is completed. This is good news for the water users of the city as it has been a pretty discouraging proposition in the getting an abund ant supply of good water and it is hoped when the reservoir is completed there will be an ample supply of wa ter of the best quality.
